Measuring Disability Prevalence In Healthcare: A Study Comparing Two Disability Measures, Kristen L. Milefchik, Rhonda K. Dailey, Sharon Milberger
Measuring Disability Prevalence In Healthcare: A Study Comparing Two Disability Measures, Kristen L. Milefchik, Rhonda K. Dailey, Sharon Milberger
Developmental Disabilities Network Journal
People with disabilities experience significant health disparities and interventions are needed to address them. Measuring disability prevalence is an essential aspect of designing effective, data-driven healthcare strategies. Accurately measuring disability prevalence is challenging given disability is a complex phenomenon, with biological, social, environmental, and cultural components. Previous studies have compared a variety of disability status measurements and found that measurements were incongruent with each other. This study examines the concordance between disability status using two different measures: the nationally recognized American Community Survey (ACS-6) functional difficulty questions and one disability identity question. We used data from 3,621 adult patients participating …

Identifying The Physical Activity Promotion Practices Of Obstetricians And Gynecologists: Patients With Endometriosis And Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, Allison P. Herman
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Despite efforts to promote physical activity, many females in Canada do not meet recommended physical activity guidelines. For individuals with gynecological conditions such as endometriosis and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), physical activity may aid in symptom management and improve daily functioning. Healthcare settings, including obstetrics and gynecology, represent an area of opportunity to promote physical activity among this population. This thesis aims to understand the physical activity promotion practices of Ontario-based Obstetricians and Gynecologists (OBGYNs) to patients with endometriosis and/or PCOS. A cross-sectional online survey was conducted to explore OBGYNs promotional practices and perceived factors influencing their engagement in physical …

Introduction: ‘Quality’ is an inseparable component of healthcare. It focuses not only on care parameters but also in identifying the potential failures/ risks associated with the care process; thereby addressing them pro-actively before the occurrence of the loss. There are several quality tools available such as Process Failure Mode Effect Analysis (PFMEA) that helps in analyzing a process for identification of possible failures. This helps to find ways to avoid the occurrence of the failure or have a strategy to eliminate or minimize the risk. Thus, the current study was undertaken on identifying the risks involved in the discharge process …

Queer Patients: An Underserved And At Risk Population, Joshua Schmidt
Capstone Showcase
Queer patients in America have faced a history of discrimination as both a community and as individuals. As such, this marginalization acts as a barrier to resources, including healthcare. Clinicians must be aware of said barrier and actively work towards dismantling it within their interactions with queer patients. This article makes a case for increasing sexual health conversations in order to assess queer patients and encourage a stronger patient-provider relationship for a community that is reluctant to seek medical attention, and also more likely to participate in higher risk behaviors.
Exploring Provider Perspectives To Understand How To Best Inform Patients In South Dakota, Isabelle M. Lehman
Exploring Provider Perspectives To Understand How To Best Inform Patients In South Dakota, Isabelle M. Lehman
Honors Thesis
Patients in rural areas are more likely to experience worse health outcomes than patients in urban or suburban areas. The reasons for this discrepancy are multi-faceted, including inequities in resources and access, as well as differences in the environment. Rural providers understand what education and resources patients are missing as they often interact with patients in multiple contexts. We interviewed rural providers and performed an inductive thematic content analysis of the interviews to shed some insight into what information rural patients would need to be better healthcare advocates for themselves. Three themes emerged from the interview data: health education, access, …
