At The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, we found a significant gap in the career advancement opportunities for our clinical and administrative staff. Employees lacked visibility into career growth pathways, leaving them disengaged and increasing the overall turnover rate. In response, our division launched a structured, transparent Career Mobility Model to provide employees with the clarity and tools needed for advancement. The Anesthesia Technology Fast Track Program (ATFTP) at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center was initiated in 2024 to mitigate a significant national deficit of trained anesthesia technologists. This 40-hour continuing education program, developed in accordance with the American Society of Anesthesia Technologists & Technicians’ (ASATT) Practical Experience Pathway, assists experienced yet non-certified anesthesia technicians in obtaining the Certified Anesthesia Technologist (Cer.A.T.T.) credential. Effective teamwork and communication are critical during medical emergencies, particularly in oncology, yet health care professionals are often trained separately, creating challenges for interprofessional collaboration. Evidence-based frameworks like Team Strategies and Tools to Enhance Performance and Patient Safety (TeamSTEPPS) offer structured tools to optimize team performance. This study describes a simulation-based program, the Clinical Medical Emergency Team Training Simulation (CMETTS), designed to instill foundational teamwork skills in early-stage learners. Background: A core component of the National Cancer Institute Cancer (NCI) Cancer Center Support Grant requires cancer centers to coordinate research career enhancement and related activities. The Yale Cancer Center, an NCI-designated comprehensive cancer center, established the Cancer Research Training and Education Coordination (CRTEC) component in 2016. In response to the needs of trainees, CRTEC has developed several initiatives that we have identified and described here as best practices to engage and support trainees.

When these teams have overlapping needs for information, the absence of a structured intake and tracking process can limit transparency, reduce efficiency, and hinder coordination across communication channels.

Hyperglycemia, defined as a blood glucose level ≥180 mg/dL in the hospitalized patient, is linked to negative outcomes including longer hospital stays, increased infection risk, and higher morbidity and mortality rates. In addition to critically ill patients with diabetes, hyperglycemia can develop in individuals without diabetes due to factors such as steroid use, continuous tube feedings, and an elevated stress response. Patients who have uncontrolled hyperglycemia are often placed on continuous insulin infusions (CII), but rebound hyperglycemia frequently occurs after CII discontinuation if the maintenance insulin regimen (MIR) is insufficient. American Society of Clinical Oncology guidelines recommend screening all patients for hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) before initiation of cancer therapy. Cancer patients receiving cancer therapy represent a vulnerable population, and reactivation of undetected hepatitis virus can lead to devastating consequences. At MD Anderson Cancer Center, rates of hepatitis screening for all cancer patients have been historically low. Background: Despite growing recognition of the value of interprofessional education (IPE), most IPE work has focused on undergraduate learners, leaving a critical gap in postgraduate and clinical environments. This report describes a phase 1, formative, pre-implementation quality improvement (QI) initiative to establish an institution-wide IPE program at an oncology center without a traditional medical school.

Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of wearing the Apple Vision Pro (AVP), a mixed-reality headset that integrates augmented and virtual reality, while performing minimally invasive procedures. While studies have demonstrated that spatial computing technology can improve surgical precision and reduce the risks of surgical complications, to our knowledge, no studies have specifically addressed the impact of the AVP on task performance during simulated image-guided procedures.

Purpose: To evaluate operational trends in an interventional oncology practice at a tertiary academic center before and after the addition of hybrid angiography–computed tomography (Angio-CT) rooms.

Materials and Methods: The procedure volumes and types performed in the hybrid Angio-CT rooms were retrospectively collected from 2016 to 2020. Procedures were divided into categories, including arteriography, endovascular interventional oncology, ablation, venous intervention, non-vascular catheter placement (biliary, nephrostomy, gastrostomy, etc.), and osseous interventions. Procedural trends in the Angio-CT rooms and the frequencies of combination procedures that used both CT and angiography were assessed.

Introduction: Molecular testing has been underutilized in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer patients, despite its potential to significantly impact clinical decision-making and resulting health outcomes.

Objectives: This project aimed to evaluate the process and impact of a performance/quality improvement (PI/QI) intervention to optimize the integration of molecular testing for patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) or thyroid cancer (TC).

Background: Although three-fourths of cancer deaths are expected to occur in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) by 2030, most cancer research still comes from high-income countries. One barrier to cancer research in LMICs is lack of infrastructure for systematic data collection, including electronic medical record systems. We developed Treatment Outcome Monitor (TOM), a cloud-based tool for tracking cancer patient outcomes, designed specifically for resource-limited settings.

Calcitonin injection is a high-cost medication used to treat hypercalcemia in hospitalized patients. Many institutions have implemented strategies to reduce unnecessary use or waste of calcitonin, including dose rounding, formulary restriction criteria, and limiting the number of doses a patient may receive. MD Anderson Cancer Center (MDACC) utilizes approximately 1200 calcitonin doses per year with no current formulary or dosing restriction criteria. Nuclear medicine clinic needs have drastically changed with the emergence of theranostics, exciting new agents in the fight against cancer. However, administering these agents is a resource-intensive task, increasing demand for physician consultation time with patients, clinic office space, and scanner time. We examined our institution’s nuclear medicine clinic workflow and interviewed the clinic’s front desk staff, technologists, nurses, managers, physicians, and patients to find sources of delays, dissatisfaction, and decreased efficiency. Accurate documentation of reasons for psychiatry consultations is critical for developing an effective treatment plan for the patient and improving quality of care through targeted interventions. The purpose of this project was to create an interactive dashboard on Power BI. We downloaded the report from Epic on SAP BI. On an Excel sheet, we recoded the reason for consults and categorized using a keyword list and recoded the consults into distinct, categories such as "anxiety," "depression," and "altered mental status (AMS)," with data spanning 2 fiscal years.

Objective: Patient-reported outcomes (PROs) contain valuable information that can be leveraged by providers to perform timely interventions and improve quality of life and survival. However, the implementation of electronic PROs (ePROs) remains a challenge from technical and evaluation perspectives. Our objective was to construct a robust electronic health record (EHR)-integrated ePRO information infrastructure founded on RE-AIM (reach-effectiveness-adoption-implementation-maintenance) principles.

Introduction: The growing emphasis on patient-centered care, along with the rise of open-access publications and online platforms, has increased patient demand for education about their medical conditions. In this context, patient-friendly language summaries of fundamental cancer clinical trials may be valuable resources for patients to learn more about their disease and treatment options.

Burnout afflicts 35% to 44% of pediatric oncology physicians, nurses, and interprofessional staff and is related to excessive workloads and emotional exhaustion. Conversely, a healthy work environment is a protective factor for burnout among physicians and nurses. Meaningful recognition is a published standard necessary for creating a healthy work environment. This study aimed to reduce staff burnout through firgun, defined as a heartfelt way to express accomplishments of another person. Background

Surgeons provide up to 10% of total opioid prescriptions across all specialties, and more than one-third of surgeon-prescribed medications are opioids. Patient-reported opioid consumption and risk of persistent opioid use beyond the postoperative recovery period correlate with the initial opioid quantity prescribed at discharge. Interventions to reduce postoperative opioid prescribing have demonstrated no adverse effects on pain control or increased need for prescription refill; however, in the absence of standardized prescription protocols, opioid prescribing practices vary widely.

This quality improvement study was conducted at a comprehensive cancer care center with the aim to decrease the percentage of on continuous infusion (CI) midazolam by 30% by May 5, 2023. The pre-intervention and post-intervention data collection phases occurred from January 1, 2022, to October 31, 2022, and March 7, 2023, to May 5, 2023, respectively. Sedation was assessed utilizing the Richmond Agitation and Sedation Scale (RASS), and delirium was assessed utilizing the Intensive Care Delirium Screening Checklist (ICDSC). Goals of care (GoC) refers to medical care decisions made by patients and families that are consistent with their personal values and preference choices. However, the oncology health care system does not always align with the patient’s GoC values and preferences. Clinical experts suggest formalized GoC education to improve this practice gap. Background and Objectives

We previously reported that implementation of a department-wide opioid education program led to post-education improvements in opioid perceptions and prescription recommendations, with one-month and one-year retention. With ongoing programmatic and quality improvement efforts, we sought to re-evaluate the retention of these improvements five years after initial efforts.

Communication remains a central priority in healthcare, making it a key component of many training efforts. The positive impacts of communication training in healthcare settings have been well-established; however, the linkage of communication training to key organizational outcomes (e.g., engagement, performance, retention) remains underexplored. The present study investigated a training program targeting interpersonal communication within a large academic oncology center.
