This study aimed to analyze the effects of rural hospital closures on employment level, economic indicators, and availability of care for communities. The research showed that rural hospital closures negatively impacted community economies and access to healthcare.

Introduction: Rural hospitals experienced both challenges and opportunities in providing healthcare to the community. As these facilities were one of the largest employers in the area, their impact was significant. The purpose of this study was to determine the sustainability of rural hospitals in the U.S. by examining variables that affect these institutions such as accessibility, availability of services, quality outcomes, and effective administrative practices.

Methodology: This qualitative study utilized a literature review and open-ended survey of an expert in Hospital Administration within or collaborating with rural areas. Five databases were used to collect 48 total sources. These sources were …

In the United States, rural hospital closures increased 34% since 2015 due to financial reasons, affecting access to healthcare services in rural communities. For rural hospital leaders, improving the hospital's financial performance is a valuable strategic goal. This multiple case study was designed to explore strategies that rural hospital leaders implement to improve their hospital's financial performance in Arizona, Georgia, Illinois, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, and the United States Virgin Islands. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services issued over 144,000 payments totaling $7.1 billion to medical facilities that have adopted and successfully demonstrated meaningful use of certified electronic health record (EHR). Hospital organizations can increase cost savings by using the electronic components of EHRs to improve medical coding and reduce medical errors and transcription costs. Telestroke has provided swift, lifesaving treatment and has afforded patients the ability to be treated in an efficient manner in rural areas where neurologists may not always be available. It has been reported that Telestroke in rural areas has increased the ability to treat patients by being able to access a neurologist for assistance in evaluating the patient to determine if administering lifesaving in treatments were needed. The utilization of Telestroke has been shown to increase the use of IV Tissue Plasminogen Activator (tPA) which improves outcomes such as better quality of life, lower disability and improved rehabilitation.
