Nurses’ Experience Of Leadership In Assisted Living: A Situational Analysis, Carole H. Bergeron Jan 2008

Nurses’ Experience Of Leadership In Assisted Living: A Situational Analysis, Carole H. Bergeron

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

This study concentrates on the voice of registered nurses as they describe their experiences of leadership within the nontraditional, non-institutional, non-hospital environment of assisted living. It further expounds upon regulatory and corporate information as context for the nurses’ leadership experiences. The desire to hear nurses describe their personal experiences of leadership influenced the decision to use grounded theory as a methodological process. The belief that voice requires context to be most effectively understood influenced, in turn, the addition of a situational analysis approach to the grounded theory methodology. As a result, interviews and scrutiny of contextual elements form the core …

Adaptation Of Lean Methodologies For Healthcare Applications, Heather (Woodward) Hagg, Deanna Suskovich, Jamie Workman-Germann, Susan Scachitti, Brian Hudson, Joseph Swartz, Chris Vanni

RCHE Publications

Lean and Six Sigma quality concepts and terminology have been applied in the manufacturing arena since the late 1980’s and early 1990’s. It has only been in recent years that healthcare administrators have identified these methods as being adaptable to their organizations so that they may realize organizational improvements for continuing success and delighting customers. Unfortunately, this is not an application that is widely taught in typical Industrial Engineering curriculum and therefore there are few educated professionals coming right out of college that are able to apply these principles to healthcare. There are however, many experienced professionals knowledgeable in the …

Determinants Of Care Seeking For Persons With Low Back And Neck Pain Treated By Physicians, Chiropractors Or Physical Therapists, Julia Chevan

Low back and neck pain are frequent reasons for adults to seek healthcare. Three types of practitioners are commonly used in the United States: physicians, chiropractors and physical therapists. In this study, Andersen's "Behavioral Model of Health Services Utilization" is used to examine care seeking and provider selection. Estimates of back and neck pain prevalence in the United States are presented as well as care seeking rates and care consumption estimates for patients who used the three providers of interest. Multivariate regression analyses are presented that model the variables that most influence care seeking and provider selection.Cases with the conditions …

What Cost Hospital Quality: Performance Uncertainty Under Market Reform, Ronald L. Fisher Jan 2006

What Cost Hospital Quality: Performance Uncertainty Under Market Reform, Ronald L. Fisher

Theses and Dissertations

Healthcare is an organizational field that has undergone profound change in the last few decades, an era characterized by market reform. Healthcare production has revealed both economic and quality problems in past eras, and reporting on these problems can be seen to have contributed to pressures for social reform. Yet, the move toward more market-oriented governance structures and design solutions also reflects a wider isomorphic institutional tendency for organizing social order. The conceptual frame work of this study takes a pessimistic stance on whether the market reform has achieved the intended goals with respect to advancing organizational quality performance. The framework …

Hospitals' Decision To Vertically Integrate Skilled Nursing Units Before And After The Balanced Budget Act, Betty C. Lucente Jan 2006

Hospitals' Decision To Vertically Integrate Skilled Nursing Units Before And After The Balanced Budget Act, Betty C. Lucente

Theses and Dissertations

The decision to vertically integrate services and deliver care has both management and policy concerns for healthcare in the United States. The change in reimbursement, which was enacted with the Balanced Budget Act of 1997, influenced the availability of post acute services for acute hospital inpatients. Prior to this change, post acute services were reimbursed based on cost similar to the pre DRG era of Medicare reimbursement. The change in payment had the potential to make discharging patients more difficult resulting in a prolonged length of stay without additional payment and at increased costs for hospitals. As a result of …

Designing A Strategy To Effectively Communicate The Balanced Scorecard, Andra Gumbus, Bridget Lyons, Tom Wilson Mar 2004

Designing A Strategy To Effectively Communicate The Balanced Scorecard, Andra Gumbus, Bridget Lyons, Tom Wilson

WCBT Faculty Publications

As increasing numbers of organizations adopt the balanced scorecard (BSC) to align strategy with operations and measure progress toward meeting strategic goals, the importance of successful communication of the scorecard throughout the organization has become apparent. Successful implementation and effective use of the BSC occurs when organizational stakeholders recognize its role, use, and benefits. In the March/April 2003 issue of Cost Management, we detailed how Bridgeport Hospital, a member of Yale New Haven Health System (YNHHS), adopted the BSC and used the scorecard to align capital investment decisions with strategy.1 In this article, we will profile how the hospital designed …
