Understanding How Patients Perceive Their Medical Providers’ Communication In A Hospital Based Emergency Department Setting, Balpreet K. Grewal-Virk Jun 2015

Understanding How Patients Perceive Their Medical Providers’ Communication In A Hospital Based Emergency Department Setting, Balpreet K. Grewal-Virk

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Background: In recent years, a chief patient complaint has been that there is a breakdown in communication with their healthcare provider. This is concerning because poor provider-patient communication can lead to reduced medication adherence, misdiagnosis, increased healthcare costs, and even death. Furthermore, the implementation of the Affordable Care Act has availed healthcare insurance to more individuals, which will increase the insured patient population. This will lead to a rise in patient visits, but also means that there are not enough physicians to support this new volume of patients. Other healthcare providers, like nurse practitioners and physicians assistants are more …

Using Network Analysis To Understand Public Health Delivery Systems & Community Health Initiatives, Glen P. Mays

Health Management and Policy Presentations

The increasingly connected world of health care delivery relies on an expanding frontier of multi-stakeholder structures and processes, from interdisciplinary patient-centered care teams, to virtual accountable care organizations (ACOs), to complex community-level interventions. This session highlights recent advances in applying social network analysis (SNA) methods to study the implementation and impact of these types of innovations. This methods workshop examines the benefits and limits of novel SNA applications based on the expanding availability of large, linkable electronic clinical and administrative data sources with dependent data structures. This paper profiles examples of using SNA principles and methods to study the implementation …

Cost Estimation In Public Health Services & Systems Research, Glen P. Mays

Health Management and Policy Presentations

Considerable uncertainty persists about the resources required to implement public health programs and policies, and about the factors that drive variation in resource needs and utilization across community and institutional settings. This paper reviews several alternative approaches to cost estimation that we have used in the field of public health services & systems research (PHSSR). This review was prepared for an expert panel meeting convened as part of a study commissioned by the U.S. Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation (ASPE) to estimate the costs associated with public health emergency preparedness capabilities.

Awareness And Utilization Of The Ohio Automated Rx Reporting System By Physician Assistants, Julia Cathleen Rose Jun 2015

Awareness And Utilization Of The Ohio Automated Rx Reporting System By Physician Assistants, Julia Cathleen Rose

All Theses And Dissertations

Chronic pain has become a public health epidemic. As pain complaints increase, so does the potential for drug abuse/misuse. Prescription drug monitoring programs (PDMPs) are active in 49 of the 50 states to assist providers in recognizing drug abuse/misuse. There is no clear standardization of who utilizes the PDMP and how. Little is still known about the ways PDMP results are incorporated into clinical decision making, what barriers exist, and how providers may or may not alter their prescribing plans based on the results. Laws surrounding prescribing practices and use of the Ohio Automated Rx Reporting System (OARRS) are constantly …

Team training is therefore, an important element of nursing education. A convenient and cost-effective approach to providing team training to nursing students is through the TeamSTEPPS® curriculum. The purpose of the study was to determine if an intentional integration of TeamSTEPPS® principles into simulation-based team training modules would improve attitudes toward teamwork in a cohort of undergraduate nursing students. Methods: A quasi–experimental time series nonequivalent control group design was used. A convenience sample of 115 first semester students …

The Star Rating System And Medicare Advantage Plans, Lisa Sprague May 2015

The Star Rating System And Medicare Advantage Plans, Lisa Sprague

National Health Policy Forum

With nearly 30 percent of Medicare beneficiaries opting to enroll in Medicare Advantage (MA) plans instead of fee-for-service Medicare, it’s safe to say the MA program is quite popular. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) administers a Star Ratings program for MA plans, which offers measures of quality and service among the plans that are used not only to help beneficiaries choose plans but also to award additional payments to plans that meet high standards. These additional payments, in turn, are used by plans to provide additional benefits to beneficiaries or to reduce cost sharing—added features that are …

The Effects Of Implementing Best Practices On 30-Day Readmission Rates In Adults Following Cabg Surgery, Linda Elaine Kline May 2015

The Effects Of Implementing Best Practices On 30-Day Readmission Rates In Adults Following Cabg Surgery, Linda Elaine Kline

Evidence-Based Practice Project Reports

Coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery is one of the most frequent and expensive cardiac surgical procedures in the U.S. today. Complications from CABG surgery are one of the top causes of 30-day hospital readmissions. Readmissions after CABG surgery are often preventable and add to health care costs. Recent government legislation mandates penalties for hospitals with excess readmission rates. The purpose of this evidence-based practice project was to determine if implementation of best practice recommendations effected 30-day readmission rates following CABG surgery. A critical appraisal of the literature was conducted to identify best practice recommendations. The Iowa model and Lewin’s …

An Assessment Of The Relationship Between The Hospital Chief Executive Officer’S Leadership Behaviors And Hospital Success, Newton J. Courtney May 2015

An Assessment Of The Relationship Between The Hospital Chief Executive Officer’S Leadership Behaviors And Hospital Success, Newton J. Courtney

Theses & Dissertations

The health care delivery system in the United States has received increased attention over the last 2 decades. Concerns of access, choice, cost, and quality have been in the forefront. This study was conducted to assess the leadership behaviors of hospitals’ chief executive officers and how they impact the performance of hospitals. Two instruments were used to collect the data for the study: the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ-5X; Avolio & Bass, 2004) and a demographics questionnaire. A correlational research design was used to measure the degree of association between variables related to hospital CEOs, the hospitals they represented and hospital …
