The Validity And Reliability Of Ultrasound As A Tool For Assessing Skeletal Muscle Characteristics In The Pediatric Population, Elizabeth Seewer
Theses and Dissertations (ETD)
Annually, around 5 million people in the U.S. are admitted to Intensive Care Units (ICU) due to critical conditions, with pediatric patients comprising 21% of these admissions. Approximately 40% of pediatric ICU (PICU) patients require mechanical ventilation and extended stays, and about 6% result in death. Survivors often face long-term disabilities, including loss of skeletal muscle mass (SMM), a risk factor for morbidity and mortality. Abdominal computed tomography (CT) scans, often performed during PICU admissions, can assess muscle mass but pose risks of increased cost and radiation exposure. While CT and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) are gold standards for muscle …

Major improvements in trauma care during the last decade have improved survival rates in the severely injured. The unintended consequence is the presentation of patients with non-survivable injuries in a time frame in which intervention is considered and often employed due to prognostic uncertainty. In light of this, discerning survivability in these patients remains increasingly problematic. Evidence-based cut-points of futility can guide early decisions for discontinuing aggressive treatment and use of precious resources in severely injured patients arriving in extremis.

Background:
Revaccination after hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) is critical to prevent morbidity and mortality from vaccine preventable illnesses. While earlier re-vaccination after HCT is desirable, they may be ineffective if deployed before partial reconstitution of adaptive immunity. Increasingly, personalized approaches to re-vaccination after HCT have replaced time-based protocols in order to minimize unvaccinated time and enhance vaccine effectiveness. Furthermore, for revaccination to be maximally beneficial, compliance with, and timely delivery of the complete revaccination schedule is imperative, but rare, and there is little data on strategies to optimize vaccine delivery.
Objectives:
The global aim of our quality improvement initiative was …

An Assessment Of Fetal Rhd Screening In Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing (Nipt) And Implementation Of Targeted Routine Antenatal Anti-D Prophylaxis (Traadp) In Enhancing Management Of Rhd-Negative Women At Risk Of Haemolytic Disease Of The Fetus/Newborn (Hdfn) In University Hospital Limerick Group (Uhlg), Anna Pohrebyannyk
International Undergraduate Journal of Health Sciences
Alloimmunisation, formerly isoimmunisation, or sensitisation can occur in pregnancy when a Rhesus D (RhD)-negative woman carries an RhD-positive fetus. Incompatibility of Rh status causes development of allo anti-D antibodies in response to antigen exposure from foreign fetal red cells in fetomaternal haemorrhages (FMHs) or potential sensitising events (PSEs) i.e., iatrogenic interventions (medical or surgical treatment), silent or spontaneous transplacental haemorrhages (STHs) in pregnancy, at birth or other traumas. Anti-D antibodies are immune-mediated and can cross the placenta and attach to fetal cells causing destruction and haemolysis. Offspring of primigravida women are unaffected usually and it is later pregnancies that may …
