Introduction

Fluoroquinolones, a class of antibiotics, are commonly employed in the treatment of a wide array of bacterial infections. Recognized for their effectiveness against a broad spectrum of pathogens, fluoroquinolones have played a pivotal role in managing conditions like urinary tract infections and respiratory diseases. Nevertheless, their usage is not without contention due to their association with a variety of adverse effects, including tendon rupture and the less frequently reported issue of peripheral neuropathy.

Case Presentation

We present the case of a 42-year-old male who developed peripheral neuropathy several days after completing a 10-day course of ciprofloxacin for gastroenteritis. The …

Fahr's syndrome, or idiopathic basal ganglia calcification, is a rare neurological disorder that runs in families as an autosomal dominant trait. It is associated with a variety of other diseases, especially Parkinson’s disease, but the etiology remains a mystery. On imaging, it presents as abnormal calcium deposits found primarily in the basal ganglia and cerebral cortex, both of which are areas responsible for controlling movement. A 73-year old woman with a past medical history of hypertension and seizures presented to the emergency department due to altered mental status. The patient was indulged in a conversation with her daughter when all …

East Florida Division GME Research Day 2023

Introduction: Pericardial effusions can have various etiologies, including infectious, autoimmune, drug induced, endocrinologic, among others. Cardiac tamponade occurs when large effusions compress the heart and can lead to obstructive shock.

Case Description: A 48-year-old female with a history of hypothyroidism and pituitary adenoma resection presented with subjective fevers and generalized weakness for the past 5 days. She was lethargic with muffled heart sounds on exam. Vitals showed a heart rate 95 beats per minute, blood pressure 63/51, respiratory rate 18 breaths per minute, with normal temperature. Labs on admission were significant for white blood cell count of 11,500/L, hemoglobin 10.8 …

Risk Factors For Depression Progression In Parkinson's Disease: A Retrospective Cohort Study, David Kosoy, James Cassuto, Gregory Kurgansky

East Florida Division GME Research Day 2023

Introduction: Depression is a common non-motor symptom in Parkinson's disease (PD) with a significant impact on quality of life and overall prognosis. Despite the availability of effective treatments, many PD patients with depression do not receive timely diagnosis and appropriate intervention. This study aimed to identify risk factors for depression progression in PD to inform clinical practice and future research.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of PD patients using registry data from the Parkinson's Progression Markers Initiative (PPMI) dataset. The primary outcome was depression progression, defined as a 2-point or greater increase in the MDS-UPRDS depression score within …

Sudden Onset Ams, Focal Weakness, Fever And Aphasia Due To Intracranial Subdural Empyema In Left Temporo-Parietal Lobe, Lily Hyunjung Lim, Menachem M. Nagar, Pallavi Aneja

East Florida Division GME Research Day 2023

Intracranial subdural empyema (ISE) is a rare infection of brain, which occurs when pus is collectively located in the space between dura and arachnoid matter. In the past, its mortality was nearly 100%, if it was not treated appropriately within 24-48 hours. Thanks to improvement of diagnostic modalities and treatment, its mortality has dramatically decreased. Though, it can still cause a devastating consequence if it is not managed in a timely manner. The common etiology of ISE is different depending on the age group. In younger patients, it occurs frequently as a complication of infection in neighboring structures like sinusitis …

HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine

Introduction: Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an emerging and rapidly evolving public health issue that has become globally widespread and an overwhelming pandemic. Clinical manifestations of the disease include asymptomatic carrier states, acute respiratory distress syndrome, and even multiorgan dysfunction. Here, we present a unique and rare case of an acute ischemic stroke (AIS) in an asymptomatic pregnant woman with no predisposing medical illnesses.

Discussion: An 18-year-old G2P1 African American woman at 7 weeks gestational age with no significant medical or family history presenting to the Emergency Department during the initial phases of the pandemic with complaints of new onset left …

Post-Dural Puncture Headache Complicated By Subdural Hematomas - A Case Report, Mark Cohen Md, Mays Alani Md, Amir Touray Md, Saif Ullah Md

Neurology

Post-dural puncture headache (PDPH) is a potential iatrogenic complication of procedures which disrupt meningeal integrity, particularly in obstetric patients, which are perhaps the highest-risk group. Common clinical manifestations include severe diffuse headache, neck stiffness, and nausea and vomiting; these symptoms, however, are non-specific and PDPH remains a diagnosis of exclusion that can be ascertained with a thorough history and proper consideration of other etiologies.
