Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Purpose: Computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) technology is gaining popularity in dentistry, and more recently, to fabricate removable partial dentures (RPD). The purpose of this study was 1) to evaluate the overall accuracy and fit of conventional versus CAD/CAM fabricated printed RPD frameworks based on STL data analysis, and 2) to evaluate the accuracy and fit of each component of the RPD framework. Materials and Methods: A maxillary metal framework was designed for a Kennedy class III modification I situation. The master model was scanned and used to compare the fit and accuracy of the RPD frameworks. A total of 40 …

The Wear Of Acrylic Resin And Composite Resin Teeth Against Polished And Glazed Zirconia, Abdulkareem Alshehri Aug 2018

The Wear Of Acrylic Resin And Composite Resin Teeth Against Polished And Glazed Zirconia, Abdulkareem Alshehri

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Background: Excessive wear for the occlusal surfaces of teeth results in decreased masticatory efficiency, poor esthetics and leads to reduced the occlusal vertical dimension which could lead to the development of temporomandibular disorders, consequently, further compromise function. Very few studies have been performed on the wear resistance of zirconia against artificial denture teeth and human enamel. Aim: The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of polished zirconia (PZ) and glazed zirconia (GZ) on the 2-body wear resistance (vertical substance loss) of seven commercially available denture teeth made of different resins. Material and Method: Eight groups (n=10) of …

Design Of Parallel Robot For Dental Articulation And Its Optimization, Abulimiti Delimulati Aug 2018

Design Of Parallel Robot For Dental Articulation And Its Optimization, Abulimiti Delimulati

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

A dental articulator is a mechanical device used to simulate the relative position and motion between the upper and lower jaw when constructing and testing dental prostheses. Typically, it can be adjusted to approximate patient-specific jaw kinematics in order to analogue the static relationship and specific motions of a patient’s mandible to maxilla. However, the use of dental articulators is essentially a trial-and-error method in order to fine-tune fit and function of a dental prosthesis. Some of the most advanced current dental articulators can reproduce the position and the motion passively; furthermore, dentists need special training for measuring patients’ maxillofacial …

Managing Patient Expectations With Implant Treatment, Daniel B. Kamran, Mark Booth Dds, Eduardo Gonzalez Dds, Ed Shaw Dds

Excellence Day

This patient came to University of the Pacific, Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry to get implants and implant crowns to improve his smile, replacing his upper partial denture. Different approaches were made by the faculty to arrive at best outcomes, which took four years for the patient to receive the treatment he wanted. This abstract will further detail how the treatment was conducted and the results afterwards.

Root Analogue Implant Creation: Establishing Procedures For The General Dentist, Alicia Hazdovac, Sarah Osborne, Gary D. Richards May 2018

Root Analogue Implant Creation: Establishing Procedures For The General Dentist, Alicia Hazdovac, Sarah Osborne, Gary D. Richards

Excellence Day

The possibility of replacing damaged teeth with custom-made root analogue implants was initially suggested around 1969 and reintroduced by Lungren et al. in 1992. The latter authors created custom implants in titanium and reported good osteointegration and aesthetic results. Following this effort there has been an increasing focus on custom root analogue implants as a replacement for ‘screw-type’ implants. Given the availability of software to manipulate 3D image data and the rapid rise of 3D printing technology, the question arises as to whether a general dentist can produce their own implants. Here we test the feasibility of practitioners producing custom …

Each patient was examined clinically and plaque index (PI), probing depth (PD), and bleeding on probing (BOP) measurements were gathered …

Effect Of Different Finish Line Designs On The Marginal And Internal Fit Of Metal Copings Made By Selective Laser Melting Technology, Adel Al Maaz Apr 2018

Effect Of Different Finish Line Designs On The Marginal And Internal Fit Of Metal Copings Made By Selective Laser Melting Technology, Adel Al Maaz

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Introduction: Marginal fit has been defined as the gap between the prepared tooth and the intaglio surface of the restoration. Internal gap is the perpendicular measurement from the internal surface of the casting to the axial wall of the preparation. Selective laser melting has been used for fabrication of metal copings such as Co-Cr base alloys and Au-Pt noble alloys. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of different finish line designs on the marginal and internal fit of metal copings made from high noble, 25% noble and base alloys manufactured by SLM technology. Material and Methods: …

Short Length Versus Conventional Implants In Rehabilitation Of Completely Edentulous Mandible, Fardos N. Rizk, Engy Tallat, Mahmoud Elhomossany, Ahmed Lasheen Dr., Hebatalla Mahmoud Jan 2018

Short Length Versus Conventional Implants In Rehabilitation Of Completely Edentulous Mandible, Fardos N. Rizk, Engy Tallat, Mahmoud Elhomossany, Ahmed Lasheen Dr., Hebatalla Mahmoud

Dentistry

Various bone augmentation strategies have been proposed to overcome the anatomic and physiologic limitations of implant placement in patients with atrophic edentulous ridges. The use of short implants may provide an alternative treatment to avoid complications associated with alveolar bone augmentation. However, the clinical effectiveness of short implants versus long implants was not thoroughly investigated. Marginal bone height changes around short and conventional implants were evaluated in this study Methods: Fourteen completely edentulous male patients were selected and divided into two equal groups. Group (I) Patients received conventional complete maxillary dentures opposed by mandibular overdentures supported and retained by two …

Effect Of Different Polishing Systems, Forces, And Durations On Surface Roughness And Phase Transformation Of Monolithic Zirconia, Songsak Munkongsujarit

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

This study aimed to determine the effect of polishing systems, forces and durations on the surface roughness and phase transformation of zirconia. 72 pieces of fully sintered zirconia size 7 x 5 x 4 mm were fabricated with CAD/CAM, then divided into nine groups depending on the polishing systems and forces. All specimens were ground with fine diamond bur as the control, and initial surface roughness (Ra) was measured. The samples were then polished with one of the zirconia polishing systems (Diazircon or Komet ZR) or porcelain polishing system (Ceramaster), with forces at 1, 2 and 3 newtons. The polishing …

Comparison Of The Efficacy Of Chemical Cleaning Methods In Removing Candida Albicans From Polymethyl Methacrylate, Thanaporn Thanamee

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

The proper denture hygiene is important to reduce the risk of denture stomatitis. Mechanical cleaning is not sufficient to remove the dental plaque from acrylic denture base, accordingly chemical cleaning is needed. The purpose of this study was to compare the efficacy of chemical cleaning methods in removing Candida albicans from polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) by comparing the remaining viable cells after cleaning. The total of 120 specimens were prepared. Candida albicans was cultured in broth to log phase. All specimens were randomly placed in 24-well tissue culture plate with 1 ml of Candida albicans cultured for biofilm formation at 37 …
