Comparison Of Digital Scanning And Polyvinyl Siloxane Impression Techniques By Dmd Students : Instructional Efficiency And Attitudes Toward Technology., Alexander M. Marti Dec 2015

Comparison Of Digital Scanning And Polyvinyl Siloxane Impression Techniques By Dmd Students : Instructional Efficiency And Attitudes Toward Technology., Alexander M. Marti

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The aim of this research was compare the ability of dental students to learn an digital scanner (3M LAVA) and material-based (PVS) impression techniques and to determine attitudes and preferences towards each. D2 dental students (n=25) were recruited and instructed on the use of 3M LAVA and PVS techniques using three pedagogic methods: 1) video lecture (P1), 2) investigator-led demonstration (P2), and 3) independent clinical exercise (P3). The amount of time for each pedagogic method was measured, averaged (± s.d.) and compared using Wilcoxon Signed-Ranks tests. A pre- and post-test was administered assessing their attitudes towards both techniques using a …

Comparative Study Of Retention Of Palate-Less Versus Complete Palatal Coverage Dentures Fitted With Zirconia Mucosal Inserts, Fardos N. Rizk Oct 2015

Comparative Study Of Retention Of Palate-Less Versus Complete Palatal Coverage Dentures Fitted With Zirconia Mucosal Inserts, Fardos N. Rizk

Dentistry

Objective: The purpose of this study is to compare the retention of palate-less versus complete palatal coverage dentures fitted with zirconia mucosal inserts. Materials and Methods: Fourteen male patients received upper complete dentures fitted with zirconia mucosal inserts. Half of the dentures were fabricated with complete palatal coverage (Group I) and the other half was palate-less (Group II).Retention was measured for all patients using force measurement gauge through six months follow-up period. Results: Both groups showed increase in denture retention through the follow-up period however, dentures with complete palatal coverage (Group 1) showed higher mean values of retention compared to …

Are Bone Turnover Markers And Vitamin D Levels Associated With Frequency Of Complete Denture Relines?, Shweta Puri Sep 2015

Are Bone Turnover Markers And Vitamin D Levels Associated With Frequency Of Complete Denture Relines?, Shweta Puri

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

PURPOSE: To compare groups of subjects with varying frequencies of complete denture relines in terms of their bone turnover markers; C-terminal Telopeptide (C-Tx), Osteocalcin (OCN) and Vitamin D (25 OH-Vit D) levels to determine the presence of and the degree of association between them.

METHODS: This study was designed as a cross-sectional study wherein a retrospective chart review of three hundred twenty four edentulous subjects with history of complete denture use for at least a year was performed to determine history and frequency of their complete denture relines. A total of 100 patients were enrolled. After consent was obtained, each …

Effect Of Diamond Bur And Root Canal Irrigants On Retention Of Fiber Posts, Rami Jekki Sep 2015

Effect Of Diamond Bur And Root Canal Irrigants On Retention Of Fiber Posts, Rami Jekki

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Esthetic glass fiber-reinforced posts are being used more often. The most commonly reported complication associated with these posts is debonding. Dentine conditioning with solutions such as EDTA or MTAD results in removal of smear layer and might improve the retention of posts to root canal dentin. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of cleansing the post space with MTAD or EDTA on the bond strength of glass fiber-reinforced posts, when a diamond roughening instrument is used prior to cementation with self-adhesive resin cement. Forty-five (n=15) extracted human premolar teeth were sectioned at the cemento-enamel junction …

Comparison Of Maxillary Anterior Teeth Width To Facial Dimensions Among Three Races, Ewa Parciak Sep 2015

Comparison Of Maxillary Anterior Teeth Width To Facial Dimensions Among Three Races, Ewa Parciak

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Dental esthetics and tooth proportions have become increasingly relevant in dentistry, as the cosmetic demands of patients increase. Determining the appropriate esthetic dimensions of the maxillary anterior teeth is an important aspect in fixed and removable prosthodontics. The proportion of facial structures and the relationship between facial measurements and natural teeth could provide additional guidance in selecting denture teeth as well as in determining ideal teeth size for fixed restorations. There have been many publications on this topic, however, the subjects in these studies have been mostly selected from the Caucasian race. With the increasing diversity of the American population …

Comparative Study Of Implant Stability And Bone Height Changes Among Different Implant Designs Retaining Partial Overdenture, Fardos N. Rizk Jul 2015

Comparative Study Of Implant Stability And Bone Height Changes Among Different Implant Designs Retaining Partial Overdenture, Fardos N. Rizk

Dentistry

Objective: This study was conducted to assess the primary stability of Trabecular Metal Dental Implant and Tapered Screw Vent Implant to determine the appropriate time for their loading by lower partial overdenture and to follow up for one year the changes in implant stability and crestal bone height surrounding the implant after loading it. Materials and Methods: The study was performed on ten lower Kennedy class I partially edentulous male patients. Each patient received one implant at the second molar area in each side of the ridge, where Trabecular Metal Dental Implant was inserted in the left side of the …

Osseointegration Of Wrapped Dental Implants In Rabbits, Alex Whitehead Jan 2015

Osseointegration Of Wrapped Dental Implants In Rabbits, Alex Whitehead

AUCTUS: The Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Scholarship

Edentulous patients (those lacking teeth) require one of two approaches to augmentation: inserting a vertical bone graft, or subperiosteally anchoring a device on which an implant can be attached. Bone grafts have had unpredictable results and can undergo resorption over time, compromising implant stability and success. As of the subperiosteal approach, current materials have not proven to directly integrate with the bone, in a process termed osseointegration. Therefore, we used additive manufacturing to create a Ti6Al4V alloy surface with a specific roughness to determine if it would be osseoinductive in a challenging rabbit model over six weeks.

Restorative Characteristics Of Intrapulpally Cracked Teeth, Charles M. Beavers Jan 2015

Restorative Characteristics Of Intrapulpally Cracked Teeth, Charles M. Beavers

Theses and Dissertations

Cracked teeth have long presented a diagnostic challenge. Previous investigators have considered possible predictive factors, many of which revolve around the tooth’s restorative characteristics. Few have investigated the restorative status of teeth with cracks extending into the pulp chamber. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the prevalence of the different types of restorations present in intrapulpally cracked teeth and determine any other restorative factors that may aid in predicting the presence or extent of an intrapulpal crack. Intrapulpally cracked molars requiring endodontic therapy at the VCU Graduate Endodontic Practice were included in this study. For each tooth, the …
