Diversity And Characteristics Of The Oral Microbiome Associated With Self-Reported Ancestral/Ethnic Groups, Qingguo Wang, Bing-Yan Wang, She'neka Williams, Hua Xie

Periodontitis disproportionately affects genetic ancestral/ethnic groups. To characterize the oral microbiome from different genetic ancestral/ethnic groups, we collected 161 dental plaque samples from self-identified African Americans (AAs), Caucasian Americans (CAs), and Hispanic Americans (HAs) with clinical gingival health or biofilm-induced gingivitis on an intact periodontium. DNA was extracted from these samples, and then DNA libraries were prepared and sequenced using an Illumina NovaSeq high-throughput sequencer. We found significant differences in the diversity and abundance of microbial taxa among dental plaque samples of the AA, CA, and HA groups. Dental plaque biofilm remaining on oral structures causes disease processes such as gingivitis, periodontitis, and dental caries. This study's purpose was to determine which sequence of dental biofilm removal is more effective, toothbrushing followed by flossing or flossing followed by toothbrushing. The study was conducted using an experimental approach with a split mouth design. A pre and post plaque index score was determined for each participant using Ramfjord’s tooth assignment and all data was recorded on a plaque control data sheet. AIM: To develop and validate an automated electronic health record (EHR)-based algorithm to suggest a periodontal diagnosis based on the 2017 World Workshop on the Classification of Periodontal Diseases and Conditions.

MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using material published from the 2017 World Workshop, a tool was iteratively developed to suggest a periodontal diagnosis based on clinical data within the EHR. Pertinent clinical data included clinical attachment level (CAL), gingival margin to cemento-enamel junction distance, probing depth, furcation involvement (if present) and mobility. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship between volatile sulfur compounds (VSC) and gingival health status and to determine if volatile sulfur compounds can detect early dental plaque-induced gingival disease. Methods. A split-mouth design with randomly selected quadrants of the mandibular arch enabled 39 participants to serve as their own controls. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of 0.12% chlorhexidine rinse (CID{) and herbal rinse (HBR) to placebo, on gingival health status over time. Methods: 63 subjects (57% male, 43% female, mean age 25 years, sd=7.67) were randomly assigned to one of three treatment groups; CHX, HBR, or placebo. Subjects rinsed twice daily (AM and PM) with ½ ounce of allocated rinse, after brushing and flossing, for three months.
