Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of placed implants using two different guided implant surgery materials: thermoplastic vs. 3-D printed surgical guides. Materials and Methods:Twenty duplicate mandibular models, ten thermoplastic and ten 3-D printed surgical guides were used. Twenty implants were placed following the guided surgery protocol. Cone beam computed tomography scans of placed implants and the control implant were superimposed to measure deviations. The objectives of this study were to compare the effect of SRP+MM versus SRP alone on inflammatory cytokines, interleukin (IL)-1β and IL-1 receptor antagonist (ra), found in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) and saliva, and correlate IL-1 values with clinical outcomes over a 2-year period of PMT. Fifty-five patients with an initial posterior pocket ≥5 mm and history of bleeding on probing (BOP) were randomized to test (SRP+MM, n=27) and control (SRP, n=28) groups. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of volumetric analysis software packages in assessment of tooth volume using cone beam computed tomography and compare them to the volume obtained using an optical digital scanner. Prior studies have shown that cigarette smoke extract (CSE) can induce profound phenotypic changes in Porphyromonas gingivalis and alters the virulence of this important periodontal pathogen. We hypothesized that CSE might also alter gene expression in established periodontal pathogens, Porphyromonas gingivalis and Treponema denticola, as well as in the emerging pathogen, Filifactor alocis. Periodontal disease (PD) is a polymicrobial infection characterized by inflammation of the gingiva, alveolar bone resorption, and tooth loss (edentulism). Treponema denticola along with Porphyromonas gingivalis and Tannerella forsythia are among the “Red Complex” and are main etiological agents in PD. Treponemes are a member of the Spirochaeta phylum and are obligate anaerobes, that express pyruvate ferredoxin oxidoreductase (PFOR). The enzyme catalyzes the oxidation of pyruvate to acetyl-CoA and reduced ferredoxin. Amixicile is a novel bacteriostatic derivative of nitazoxanide and an inhibitor of PFOR. Case Description: This case report describes the successful management of a left mandibular first molar with a combined periodontic-endodontic lesion in a 35-year-old Caucasian woman with aggressive periodontitis using a concerted approach including endodontic treatment, periodontal therapy, and a periodontal regenerative procedure using an enamel matrix derivate. In spite of anticipated poor prognosis, the tooth lesion healed. This case report also discusses the rationale behind different treatment interventions. Practical Implication. Periodontic-endodontic lesions can be successfully treated if dental professionals follow a concerted treatment protocol that integrates endodontic and periodontic specialties.
