Dentistry

Periapical pathosis in periapical radiographs must be properly diagnosed for the success of endodontic treatment but is often muddled by 2D imaging limitations and subjective interpretation. Artificial intelligence (AI) offers a solution, but whether the diagnostic granularity of AI versus human clinicians in everyday clinical practice has been adequately explored remains to be addressed. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of ChatGPT-5 in detecting periapical radiographic abnormalities compared with the three-expert consensus reference standard. Methods: In this diagnostic accuracy retrospective study, 270 periapical radiographs were independently read by a large language model (ChatGPT-5) and a …

Clinical Evaluation Of Ozone Gel Versus Hyaluronic Acid Gel On Palatal Wound Following Free Gingival Graft Harvesting: A Randomized Clinical Trial, Hisham Tarek, Nesma Shemais, Dalia Ghalwash, • Ahmed El Barbary

Dentistry

Objective: This randomized clinical trial (RCT) compares the effectiveness of ozone gel (GeliO3) and hyaluronic acid (HA) gel(Gengigel) in enhancing wound healing and reducing postoperative discomfort following free gingival graft (FGG) harvesting. Methods: Fifty-six patients requiring FGG for mucogingival defects were randomly assigned into two groups: the ozone gel group and the HA gel group. The primary outcome was postoperative pain, assessed using the visual analog scale (VAS) and analgesic consumption. Secondary outcomes included wound healing, evaluated using the Landry healing index, and color match assess-ment. Data were analyzed using appropriate statistical tests with a significance level of p< 0:05.Results: Both treatment groups exhibited significant pain reduction over time (p< 0:001). Although there was no statistically significant difference between the groups, a faster decline in pain was observed in the ozone group by Day 3. Analgesic consumption was significantly lower in the ozone group on Days 2 and 3 (p ¼ 0:042). The healing index and color match scores showed a steady improvement in both groups, with the ozone group demonstrating slightly higher values at various time points, though not statistically significant. Conclusion: Both ozone gel and HA gel effectively enhanced post-FGG healing, reduced pain, and improved tissue esthetics.Ozone therapy showed potential advantages in early pain relief and lower analgesic dependence. These findings suggest that ozonetherapy may serve as an alternative or adjunctive treatment for palatal wound management in periodontal surgery. Furtherresearch is needed to confirm its clinical superiority over HA gel.

Low Dose Cone Beam Computed Tomography Versus High Dose Cone Beam Computed Tomography In Measuring Furcation Involvements: (Diagnostic Accuracy Study), Marwa Ezz, Cairo University, Misr University For Science & Technology

Dentistry

Accurate diagnosis of furcation defect is essential in periodontal therapy planning. Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) provides three-dimensional visualization, but higher radiation doses remain a concern. This study aims to assess and compare the diagnostic accuracy of low-dose CBCT (LD-CBCT) and high-dose CBCT (HD-CBCT) in detecting and measuring furcation defect using a pig mandible. Detection and accurate assessment of periodontal disease is important to determine the tooth prognosis and treatment. Radiographic assessment provides information about the pattern and extent of the furcation defect. CBCT provides unique 3D images used for diagnosis and treatment plans, but its use in periodontology not …

Voclosporin‐Induced Gingival Enlargement: A Case Report, Dimitris N. Tatakis

Faculty Scholarship

The gingiva (gums) is often a site in the mouth where changes or reactions can occur in response to certain systemic medications. Some drugs, particularly those used to treat autoimmune conditions or following organ transplants, can cause the gums to grow excessively, a condition known as drug-induced gingival enlargement (also known as gingival overgrowth). In this report, we document the case of a 27-year-old woman with lupus nephritis who developed gingival enlargement after starting a medication called voclosporin. This drug is a newer treatment option for lupus nephritis, but until now had not been linked to gingival enlargement. The patient …

Periodontitis disproportionately affects genetic ancestral/ethnic groups. To characterize the oral microbiome from different genetic ancestral/ethnic groups, we collected 161 dental plaque samples from self-identified African Americans (AAs), Caucasian Americans (CAs), and Hispanic Americans (HAs) with clinical gingival health or biofilm-induced gingivitis on an intact periodontium. DNA was extracted from these samples, and then DNA libraries were prepared and sequenced using an Illumina NovaSeq high-throughput sequencer. We found significant differences in the diversity and abundance of microbial taxa among dental plaque samples of the AA, CA, and HA groups. We also identified unique microbial species in a self-reported ancestral/ethnic group. Moreover, …

Periodontitis, a chronic inflammatory condition caused by bacteria, often causes gradual destruction of the components that support teeth, such as the alveolar bone, cementum, periodontal ligament, and gingiva. This ultimately results in teeth becoming loose and eventually falling out. Timely identification has a crucial role in preventing and controlling its progression. Clinical measures are used to diagnose periodontitis. However, now, there is a hunt for alternative diagnostic and monitoring methods due to the progress of technology. Various biomarkers have been assessed using multiple bodily fluids as sample sources. Furthermore, conventional periodontal categorization factors do not provide significant insights into the …
