Laser-Assisted New Attachment Procedure: A Review, Divya Khanna B.D.S., M.D.S.

Periodontal treatment modalities have evolved substantially to evidence-based minimally invasive treatment options. Lasers have proved to be an effective tool by providing a myriad of benefits and advantages while eliminating many of the negative sequelae that have been historically associated with conventional pocket elimination surgery. Laser-assisted new attachment procedure (LANAP) is a well-defined treatment protocol that has been validated with human histology and has demonstrated both short- and long-term success. LANAP has proven to be an effective, safe and predictable treatment option for achieving regeneration and new attachment formation, leading to favorable clinical outcomes, improved patient compliance and acceptability.

We herein present a case of a giant cell fibroma in an older adult male that clinically has a pebbly or bosselated surface architecture, mimicking a squamous papilloma. The giant cell fibroma is a fibrous tumor distinct from the common irritation fibroma and may easily be mistaken for a papilloma based on clinical features. This case is reported to provide diagnostic value to the general practitioner.

The adverse general and oral health effects from traditional cigarette smoking are supported by decades of research. However, the use of cigarettes in the United States is on the decline, and current research and literature is relatively lacking with respect to novel nicotine consumption methods. Given the increasing and significant use of non-cigarette nicotine-containing products, such as electronic cigarettes, oral nicotine pouches and hookah pipes, attention from oral healthcare providers is warranted. An understanding of the potential negative periodontal outcomes related to these newer nicotine delivery systems is crucial to properly educating and treating patients today.

Purpose of review: To provide clinicians with knowledge of periodontal risk assessment that can be applied chairside effortlessly.

Recent findings: Detecting periodontal risk factors early may reduce the morbidity of oral and systemic diseases, as oral and systemic health can have a bidirectional relationship.

Summary: Dental professionals are equipped with evidence-based risk factors to predict and prevent the progression of periodontal disease. Implementing chairside risk assessment allows for prevention and early intervention, potentially reducing healthcare costs and promoting simpler solutions in an unpredictable economy.

The purpose of this paper is to report the case of an 8-year-old female with occlusal interferences involving the permanent maxillary right central incisor (PMRCI) due to a Type 1 dens evaginatus, also known as a talon cusp (TC), causing displacement of the affected tooth. Clinical concerns related to TCs include occlusal interferences and increased risk for dental injury, displacement of the affected tooth, caries, tongue irritation and esthetic concerns. Introduction: The subepithelial connective tissue graft (S-CTG) is the gold standard in achieving root coverage but is not without limitations. The Acellular Dermal Matrix (ADM) is an alternative source that can compensate for the S-CTG’s limitations. Body: Severe recession type 1 (RT1) defects were treated with a combined approach of autogenous and allogeneic soft tissue grafting, optimizing the benefits of both types of materials, in order to achieve maximum root coverage (MRC). People living with HIV/AIDS (PLWH) have an increased life expectancy due to advances in antiretroviral therapy. In 1996, the life expectancy for a 20-year old living with HIV was 39-years old; today, it is >70-years old. As life expectancy increases, PLWH are burdened with age-associated comorbidities. This paper reviews the interaction between aging and HIV and how it affects social, physical, and oral health issues. The shift in demographics presents new challenges for clinicians in how to identify, address, and manage these complex manifestations. This review summarizes how to approach HIV-related changes when providing care as a dental clinician.

Aim: To compare the clinical outcomes of platelet-derived biomaterials, including recombinant human platelet-derived growth factors receptor BB (rhPDGF-BB), platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and platelet-rich fibrin (PRF), for treatment of periodontal infra-bony defects. Materials and Methods: A meta-analysis was conducted to compare pocket depth reduction (PRD) and clinical attachment gain (CAG) with and without rhPDGF-BB, PRP or PRF, for surgical treatments of periodontal infra-bony pockets. Eligible studies were randomized controlled clinical trials in adults with periodontal infra-bony defects. Narrow diameter implants and mini-implants are preferred by dentists for restoration of missing teeth on narrow ridges. However, such implants are associated with long-term complications including soft tissue deficiencies. This case report describes a novel approach using a connective tissue graft to resolve peri-implant mucositis. A 66-year old male patient presented with inflammation and abscess in relation to a mini-implant, at the upper left incisor, on the facial aspect. Deficiencies of keratinized tissue and width of attached gingiva were observed. Surgical management was performed using subepithelial connective tissue. Papillon-LeFevre Syndrome (PLS) is a rare autosomal recessive disease, associated with palmar-plantar hyperkeratosis and premature loss of both deciduous and permanent teeth. Treatment of this disease continues to be a challenge to the medical and dental professions. The following is a case report of two siblings of Chinese origin, diagnosed with Papillon-LeFevre syndrome and follows them for 10 subsequent years.
