Introduction: Varied alterations in types of secreted mucin may affect the regulation of cell growth, immune response and adhesion of cell. These changes may indirectly contribute to the ability of tumour invasion and metastasis. However, the expression of mucins in salivary gland tumours has not been explored in depth. Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is a malignancy that arises from the epithelial cells within the oral cavity. It accounts for approximately 355,000 new cases worldwide and is exceptionally prevalent in particular geographical areas such as Papua New Guinea, the Indian subcontinent and South-East Asian countries. Despite advances in surgical management and therapeutic approaches, the five-year survival rate of OSCC patients has not improved significantly over the past few decades. More than 700 different types of microorganisms dwell in human oral mucosal surfaces. The interactions between these microorganisms contribute to formation of polymicrobial communities on hard and soft tissues as well as on dentures and implants. Candida albicans, a pleomorphic fungus inhabiting oral and gastrointestinal (GIT) mucosa becomes pathogenic in favourable conditions causing local or systemic disease. Since streptococci are early colonisers, the ability of Candida albicans to adhere to streptococci paves the way for an additional surface for candidal colonization and propagation. Introduction: The presence tumour-related genetic alterations in histologically noninvolved mucosal surgical margins was linked to development of local relapse in OSCC. Aims: The present study aimed to determine the association between expression of Ki67, FSCN1 and TNFRSF12A in histologically non-involved mucosal surgical margins of OSCC patients and local relapse. Despite advances in diagnostic and therapeutic modalities, mortality and morbidity rates have not improved in the last decade. Hence, alternative diagnostic and therapeutic approaches are urgently needed. Cancer testes antigens (CTA) are proteins that are expressed in various malignant tumours but its expression in normal tissue is restricted to testes and occasionally placental trophoblast.
