Quantification Of Bone Deposition In Onlay Bone Grafting, Gregory Alan Kammeyer

The purpose of this study was to quantitatively evaluate; 1) mandibular posterior mono-cortical block onlay bone graft success rates 2) the amount of grafted bone retained after initial resorption in radiographic projections. Seven consecutive patients with 14 mandibular posterior implant sites requiring bone augmentation for implants of a standard 3.8mm x 10mm dimension were sought. Mono-cortical block bone grafts from the ipsilateral ascending ramus were placed then observed with two standardized CT scans, dividing them into two groups: Group A had the first CT at 4 weeks after graft placement and a second taken before Prosthodontic reconstruction, 36.7 weeks later. …

Distraction osteogenesis, a unique system of affecting rapid bone healing in fractures, realigning malformed bones, and lengthening congenitally short and traumatically shortened bones has become an increasingly utilized technique for the maxillofacial region. The use of distraction osteogenesis has been described for increasing the height of edentulous mandibular alveolar ridges while concurrently forming new bone within the ridge to allow for adequate reconstruction. A standard protocol for performing distraction osteogenesis in the maxillofacial region has been well documented in the literature. Purpose: Treatment of vascular lesions of the high cervical internal carotid artery (zone III) resulting from penetrating trauma, blunt trauma, aneurysms, and atherosclerosis pose a challenge for vascular surgeons due to bony interference's of the mandibular ramus and mastoid process. Although many techniques have been described, two methods, have been identified as effective and associated with low morbidity. The purpose of this study is to compare these two methods, mandibular distraction and vertical ramus osteotomy, for their effectiveness at increasing access to the cranial base and distal internal carotid artery.

I. Review of the Literature and Description of a Regeneration Surgical Technique
This report provides an abbreviated review of the literature on treatment and prognosis of periodontal furcation lesions. In addition, it describes a surgical technique designed to accomplish bone regeneration in class II furcation defects, together with the rationale for the development of this procedure. Results of treatment of 30 defects with this technique are presented in a subsequent report (Gantes et al. 1987).

Expansion of the maxilla at the midpalatal suture has had much investigation and is a recognized option in orthodontic therapy. Lateral expansions of the mandible through surgical separation at the symphysis have been done in animal studies. A combination of these procedures has not yet been done together.
The purpose of this study was to expand both the maxilla and the mandible of a baboon simultaneously while maintaining occlusion. The amount of expansion and stability was studied using photographs, models, cephalograms, and tetracycline bone labels using U.V. microscopy.
A young adult baboon with full dentition and normal occlusion was used. …

Mechanical expansion of the maxilla, at the midline suture, is a widely accepted orthodontic procedure used to gain arch width in certain types of maxillary deficient arches.
In animal research on the mandible, techniques using surgical separation at the symphysis with immediate expansion up to 12 mm, fixation with a metal splint, and autogenous bone transplanted into the expanded area, have been reported to be successful.
To date, no experiment utilizing slow mechanical expansion of the mandible at the symphysis has been reported.

Readily accessible equipment as utilized for cineangiography has been demonstrated to be useful in producing dynamic studies of the temporomandibular joint.
The reproducible studies have been obtained without adaptation of equipment. Methods used in this project were based on principles which have been advocated for the past thirty years for static radiographs of the temporomandibular joints.
Studies were made of a variety of subjects varying in size and joint integrity. Diagnostic views were obtained on all subjects showing normal osseous joint structures and typical joint function via the use of motion picture records. Changes in osseous joint structures were readily …

Surgical orthodontics presents a challenge to the oral surgeon. By the nature of the oral surgeon's training and discipline he should be the one best qualified to treat the surgical aspect of the surgical orthodontic case. The establishment of a proper diagnosis and means of communication between the oral surgeon and orthodontist are essential in achieving a good final result for the surgically treated case. Fortunately, a scientific method of diagnosis is available that can provide both specialties with a common language. Computerized cephalometric analysis can provide the diagnosis and link of communication for the discussion of goals and treatment. …
