Purpose

Many infants with cleft lip and/or palate (CL/P) have airway issues that make supine, flat-surface sleep challenging.¹ Prior studies indicate that alternative positioning may reduce obstructive events,² and early sleep-disordered breathing can affect later development.³  Despite this, caregivers of infants with craniofacial differences rarely receive tailored sleep guidance, and no evidence-based, condition-specific recommendations currently exist.^4,5

Methods

This single-site, cross-sectional study evaluated sleep practices, caregiver education, and barriers to adherence among parents of children (< 3 years) with CL/P treated at CHKD’s Craniofacial Program. Eligible caregivers (n=117) were identified via query of the electronic medical record by CHKD Data Governance and invited to complete an anonymous REDCap survey assessing demographics, sleep environment, counseling, and understanding of safe-sleep recommendations.

Background: Individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities may require dental care to be delivered while under general anesthesia, albeit there is often greater need for these services than hospital capacity allows.

Case Description: This case report presents a 19-year-old male with intellectual and developmental disabilities and numerous comorbidities who was able to be treated under general anesthesia in an academic dental surgery center by an interdisciplinary team. The accompanying discussion identifies strategies that dental teams and academic centers can consider to effectively provide care to patients with intellectual and developmental disabilities who require general anesthesia.

The aim of the present study is to determine the prevalence and demographics of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) condylar changes in the asymptomatic general population of a hospital based Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) practice. We retrospectively reviewed cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans of 272 TMJs from 136 consecutive patients to detect osteophyte, subchondral cyst, sclerosis, cortical erosions, and flattening. While gender did not appear to play a significant role in TMJ pathology, age was positively correlated with prevalence of condylar changes. The selected studies were reviewed based on citation count for which the cut-off date was June 1, 2021.

Objective: To radiographically evaluate the proximal marginal fit of the clinically acceptable metal-ceramic crowns.
Methods: The prospective study was conducted at the dental clinics of Aga Khan University, Karachi, from July to December 2018, and comprised metal-ceramic crowns that were evaluated prior to the cementation. Clinical examinations were conducted by seating the crown on the tooth preparation and visual assessment was done using sharp explorer along the margins. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a well-recognized disease entity affecting approximately 2% to 4% of the population. Maxillomandibular advancement (MMA) surgery is a highly successful surgical alternative to poorly tolerated CPAP therapy and achieves a success rate of 89% in the current literature. Our present study evaluates the effectiveness of MMA surgery in the treatment of patients with moderate to severe OSA based on Shers criteria of 50% reduction in AHI and AHI < 20.
