Periapical pathosis in periapical radiographs must be properly diagnosed for the success of endodontic treatment but is often muddled by 2D imaging limitations and subjective interpretation. Artificial intelligence (AI) offers a solution, but whether the diagnostic granularity of AI versus human clinicians in everyday clinical practice has been adequately explored remains to be addressed. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of ChatGPT-5 in detecting periapical radiographic abnormalities compared with the three-expert consensus reference standard. Methods: In this diagnostic accuracy retrospective study, 270 periapical radiographs were independently read by a large language model (ChatGPT-5) and a …

Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the proximity of upper posterior tooth roots to adjacent sinus borders using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) in a Turkish subpopulation and to assess dental students’ competence in identifying this anatomical relationship. Methods: CBCT scans of 171 patients were analyzed. The vertical relationship between premolars and molar roots, and the maxillary sinus (MS) border was categorized into four types (Type 0–3). Interrater agreement between three final-year dental students and an experienced radiologist was measured. Results: Type 0 was the most frequent classification, except for first molars, where Type 2 and Type 3 predominated. MS-root distances …

Accurate diagnosis of furcation defect is essential in periodontal therapy planning. Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) provides three-dimensional visualization, but higher radiation doses remain a concern. This study aims to assess and compare the diagnostic accuracy of low-dose CBCT (LD-CBCT) and high-dose CBCT (HD-CBCT) in detecting and measuring furcation defect using a pig mandible. Detection and accurate assessment of periodontal disease is important to determine the tooth prognosis and treatment. Radiographic assessment provides information about the pattern and extent of the furcation defect. CBCT provides unique 3D images used for diagnosis and treatment plans, but its use in periodontology not …

The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association
Each month, The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association provides news, information, and features about Michigan dentistry to our state's oral health community and the MDA's 6,200+ members. It stands as the primary publication reaching Michigan dentists. The August issue marks the end of digital only publishing, as the MDA announced it will provide members a bimonthly print issue along with monthly digital distribution. This issue includes:
- A cover feature on the impact on the dental community of the recently adopted Big Beautiful Bill federal budget
- Mandibular Lingual Concavity Evaluation Using CBCT
- A reprinted clinical feature from New York on …
