Dental Hygiene Protocol Used By Nurses In The Hospital Setting A Pilot Survey, Tsenre M. Vigil
Dental Hygiene ETDs
Oral care is often dismissed or undervalued in the overall health and wellness of individuals and can be detrimental to patients in hospital-like settings. Although dental hygienists are educated to practice in alternative practice settings like pediatric offices, hospitals, nursing homes, schools and federally qualified health centers they are underutilized in such arenas. The purpose of this study is to learn about the University of New Mexico Hospital’s (UNMH) current oral hygiene care practices and protocols, nurses’ values and interests in inter-professional collaboration with a dental hygienist.
A feedback survey was created and intended recipients included all UNMH nurses regardless …

Dental Hygeinists Clinical Assessment Of Dental Cervical Lesions, Shyanne Padilla
Dental Hygiene ETDs
Dental hygiene is among one of the fastest growing career fields in the healthcare system. With dental hygienists spending a considerable amount of time with their patients during periodic recall appointments, it is important for dental hygienists to be calibrated with one another in how they recognize and aid in recommending treatment options for certain dental conditions. Dental cervical lesions is one of the most commonly seen oral implications in the dental office, many times being associated with tooth sensitivity. With the array of etiologies and treatment options for dental cervical lesions it is important to see if this same …

Consideration For Care For Your Patient With Cerebral Palsy, Katlin R. Cannon, Melissa Stowe, Brooke Ryan
Consideration For Care For Your Patient With Cerebral Palsy, Katlin R. Cannon, Melissa Stowe, Brooke Ryan
Dental Hygiene Student Scholarship
Cerebral palsy (CP) is a common developmental neurological disorder affecting about 2-3 children out of 1,000. CP is the result of infant brain damage or abnormal development resulting in impaired muscle control, coordination, tone, reflex, posture, and balance. These patients are unable to control motor movements of their muscles of mastication and facial expression, causing excessive drooling, clenching, bruxism, and other oral health-related issues. This lack of motor control affects their ability to swallow and often limits these patients to a liquid diet. This can lead to vitamin deficiencies and result in further developmental problems. As an example, a deficiency …

Effective And Ineffective Clinical Teaching And Instruction In Dental Hygiene School, Vicki Gianopoulos Pizanis
Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs
Introduction
Educators who teach in a clinical setting, primarily in healthcare fields, while having knowledge of the subject, having skills in what is taught, and having experience in the field, often have little-to-no training in teaching. This results in instructional practices being based upon intuition and experience. Becoming aware of how qualities and characteristics of clinical instructors affect adult learners’ educational experience through evidence-based research, and using its implications, would help promote more effective instruction and ultimately improve student learning.
Methodology
A mixed methods study using Grounded Theory and Critical Incidence technique was conducted to study junior student, senior student …

Importance And Value Of Hiv Education Amongst Dental Hygiene Student Providers, Shawndell Bowers
Dental Hygiene ETDs
Persons living with HIV have an increased risk of complications and manifestations that may include the oral cavity. They are also more susceptible to dental implications such as dental decay and periodontal disease. Their oral health management is dependent on capable dental providers that understand and comprehend their specific needs. Those providers must also demonstrate ethical and clinical competence in order to provide comprehensive care. Preparing capable dental hygiene providers is essential to their long-term management of their oral health. These foundational skills are developed during their academic years and therefore, this qualitative survey was aimed at gaining student perceived …
Implementing A Minimally Invasive Approach, Diana V. Macri
Implementing A Minimally Invasive Approach, Diana V. Macri
Publications and Research
The World Health Organization notes that 60% to 90% of children and nearly 100% of adults have a history of dental caries. The caries process begins with the action of organic acids, which are produced by bacteria found in organized dental plaque via the anaerobic metabolism of dietary sugars. When this dental plaque goes undisturbed, organic acids may initiate the early stages of demineralization. Demineralization gradually weakens the tooth structure, making it more susceptible to plaque formation and demineralization. Remineralization is the process by which the damage to these surfaces is repaired by replacing surface minerals utilizing therapies such as …

Pain Management In Dentistry, Diana V. Macri
Publications and Research
The International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) has defined pain as “an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage or described in terms of such damage." The most common dental complaint is pain, accounting for more than 80%of all dental visits. Pain diminishes the quality of life for many people, although it also may be a vital teacher or a warning message to be heeded. How humans process pain is a complicated, individualized process affected by genetics, personality, life experiences and straight forward physiological process.

The aims of this study were to determine the extent of formal education related to mass fatality preparedness and response training in U.S. dental hygiene programs and to assess program directors' perceptions of the need for such training. A 23-item cross-sectional survey was emailed to 319 U.S. dental hygiene programs in 2015. …
Strategies For Improving Patient Compliance, Diana V. Macri
Strategies For Improving Patient Compliance, Diana V. Macri
Publications and Research
Patient compliance is the degree to which a person adheres to the professional advice healthcare providers offer. Aside from significantly compromising a person’s health, non-compliance also wastes resources and productivity. The monetary costs of medical noncompliance has been estimated to be around $300 billion a year. Demographic, disease severity and gender effects on compliance are small. In dental hygiene, where practitioners focus on the prevention of oral disease, motivating patients to practice healthy behaviors has long been a challenging, and often frustrating, aspect of practice. Any discussion of compliance must begin with a brief review of human development and the …
