The professional organizations that represent dentists across Indiana and the United States, set standards for dental care, promote oral health, and advocate for the dental profession. Despite its long-standing reputation and contributions, both the ADA and the IDA have often been the target of misinformation and myths. The public also often gather misinformation about dental care and then question their dentist about it. This article aims to shed light on some of the most common misconceptions about organized dentistry, discuss member benefits, and answer the question ‘why you should be a member.

Organized dentistry refers to the combined and coordinated efforts of dental professionals through local, state, and national associations to advance the field. It involves working together to promote oral health, advocate for beneficial policies, provide continuing education, and uphold standards of practice. Examples include the American Dental Association (ADA), state dental societies, like the Indiana Dental Association and all its component societies and specialty organizations that offer resources, networking opportunities, and a collective voice for the profession.

Down Syndrome is a common developmental disability.  Patients with DS may have many co-morbities associated with the condition, which include cardiac abrnormalities and severe periodontal disease.  This case illustrates how a patient with advanced periodontitis was treated in the Special Care Clinic at UOP, Dugoni School of Dentistry.

Problem

Childhood caries is a preventable public health issue disproportionately affecting the underserved. National guidelines recommend fluoride varnish (FV) application during well‑child visits. In California, fewer than 15% of children under age six received FV. In a pediatric primary care clinic, baseline performance was 11% in 2025.

Context

A six‑month quality improvement project was implemented. Key barriers included reduced team cohesion, workflow variability, unclear roles, and underutilized electronic health record (EHR) prompts.

Interventions

The change package standardized medical assistant–led workflows, activated EHR prompts, and provided targeted education. Leadership reinforcement through regular huddles supported adoption, consistency, and team engagement.
