Aims Preservation of peri-cervical dentin during the preparation of endodontic access is important to prevent fractures and improve the long-term prognosis. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of rotary file instrumentation (TruNatomy and XP-Endo Shaper) on peri-cervical dentin removal, depending on access size. Materials and Methods Forty 3D printed mandibular first molars, with either a small or large access design, were instrumented using TruNatomy or XP-endo Shaper file systems. Canal volumes were calculated based on micro-computed tomography data obtained pre- and post-operatively. Objective: To evaluate and compare the reliability of different methods to measure sensitivity caused by in-office bleaching procedures.

Methodology: A convenience sample of 34 patients from the dental clinics at Nova Southeastern University participated in the study upon IRB approval, signing consent forms and complying the inclusion/exclusion criteria. All procedures were provided by the same operator (Dr. Abuzinadah) according to the manufacturer’s instructions using Opalescence® Boost® PF 40% (Ultradent, South Jordan, UT). Alzheimer disease is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that causes cognition impairment and memory loss, affecting activities in daily living. In the United States, an estimated 4.5 million people have AD and this figure is expected to reach 14 million by 2050. Because patients with AD experience a deterioration of their mental functions, patients need more help with their activities of daily living, including oral hygiene, as their AD progresses. Gingival enlargement (GE) is a condition in which the size of the gingiva increases in response to inflammation, systemic disease, or certain medications including anticonvulsants, calcium-channel blockers, and immunosuppressants. This report describes the management of two cases involving severe gingival enlargement related to the use of an anti-hypertensive calcium-channel blocker and an immunosuppressant. Besides taking amlodipine, one patient had undergone a heart transplantation seven years prior and has been taking two immunosuppressant drugs, mycophenolate and tacrolimus. The extent of the destruction of periodontal support, aggravated by gingival enlargement, resulted in extensive tooth loss. Periodontitis and gingival enlargement exacerbate and accelerate …

HPV is responsible for several cancers, including oropharyngeal, which is currently on the rise. Each year an estimated 53,000 cases of oropharyngeal cancers are diagnosed, with 70% of the cases related to HPV. Background: Oral cancers account for 3% of annual U.S. cancer diagnosis, 2 in 5 of which are diagnosed late when prognosis is poor. The purpose of this study was to report the population-level prevalence of oral cancer examination among adult smokers and alcohol drinkers and assess if these modifiable lifestyle factors are associated with receiving an oral cancer examination.

Methods: Adult participants ≥30 years (n = 9374) of the 2013–2016 cycles of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey were included. Objective:

The objective of this study was to examine the associations between self-reported ability to afford dental care and quality of life in adults aged 45 years and older.

Method:

We used publicly available cross-sectional data from the 2008 National Health Interview Survey and its oral health supplement for 11,760 adults aged 45+ years. The increased probabilities of reporting dental problems attributable to an inability to afford dental care were estimated from multivariate models and combined with respective dental problem disability weights from the Global Burden of Disease to measure loss in quality of life.

Purpose: To examine self-reported oral health among adults aged 40 years and older with and without vision impairment.

Design: Cross-sectional, with a nationally representative sample.

Methods: We used publicly available data from the Oral Health Module, last administered in 2008, of the National Health Interview Survey. Outcome variables included fair/poor oral health status, mouth condition compared to others the same age, mouth problems (mouth sores, difficulty eating, dry mouth, bad breath, and/or jaw pain), teeth problems (toothache; broken/missing fillings or teeth; loose, crooked, or stained teeth; and/or bleeding gums), and lack of social participation. Background: Multipeak light-curing units (LCUs) are gaining popularity due to potential need to activate different photoinitiators. One of the risks associated with using LCUs is heat generation which can reach the pulp chamber through restorative materials and may cause an adverse pulp reaction. However, there is a limited data on heat generation potential of multipeak as compared to single peak LCUs.

Introduction: During the last decade, the results of several clinical studies suggested that oral probiotics may potentially improve oral health. The first study examining the effects of probiotics on oral health demonstrated that almost every patient with gingivitis, periodontitis or pregnancy gingivitis, had significant improvements in measurable periodontal indices when they were treated with a locally administered culture supernatant of a Lactobacillus acidophilus strain. This finding sparked several other studies to further examine the potential for treating oral diseases, such as, combating halitosis, oral candidiasis, and dental caries with probiotics.
