Bone grafting has been considered the gold standard for hard tissue reconstructive surgery and is widely used for large mandibular defect reconstruction. However, the midface encompasses delicate structures that are surrounded by a complex bone architecture, which makes bone grafting using traditional methods very challenging. Improving the physical, mechanical and biological properties of brushite cements (BrC) is of a great interest for using them in bone and dental tissue engineering applications. The objective of this study was to incorporate iron (Fe) at different concentrations (0.25, 0.50, and 1.00 wt%) to BrC and study the role of Fe on phase composition, setting time, compressive strength, and interaction with human dental pulp stem cells (hDPSCs). However, we do not know what the three-dimensional stable structures are with certainty. The purpose of this study was to identify the most stable mandibular landmarks in growing patients using three-dimensional images. Objectives: Refugees encounter several health disparities including oral health problems. This study evaluated the self-reported oral health status, practices, and access to care of adult refugees living in San Antonio, Texas, United States. Materials and Methods: Adult refugees ( n = 207) who accessed services from two centers in San Antonio, completed this survey. Multivariate logistic regression was used to examine the relationship of the refugees’ demographics with oral health status, practices, and access to care. The purpose of this study was to learn which oral chemotherapeutic rinses dental hygiene educators cover within dental hygiene curriculum. A survey was created to include dental hygiene educators responsible for oral chemotherapeutic curriculum within dental hygiene programs. Participants were asked which oral chemotherapeutic agents they included within their curriculum, their knowledge regarding several oral chemotherapeutic agents and evidence based/ non evidence based oral chemotherapeutic agents. The survey was sent to 375 dental hygiene directors and 77 (20.5%) participated in the survey study. Materials and Methods In this randomized, examiner-blind, stratified, parallel study, primary and secondary efficacy variables were mean changes in Schiff score (evaporative [air] sensitivity) and tactile threshold (Yeaple probe), respectively, from baseline to Week 8 between Test (n = 62) and Negative control (n = 62). This research focuses on constructing a procedure that allows for the nondestructive extraction of mtDNA from teeth for forensic DNA analysis. Currently, only a destructive method for extracting DNA from teeth is used in the forensic laboratory to identify an individual. A disadvantage of extracting DNA through a destructive method is the complete or partial loss of the tooth. This study sought to develop a novel method to quantitatively characterize non-carious cervical lesions (NCCLs) using an intraoral scanner (IOS) paired with Geomagic Wrap mesh software. The goal was to compare results with those obtained using an optical profilometer and Proscan superimposition software for clinical application. Comparisons were made using a previously published dataset aimed at measuring tooth loss associated with differing toothbrush and toothpaste types. Results show good comparability between methods and confirm that variation in brush stiffness and paste abrasivity result in significantly and predictably different levels of NCCL development. Nanoparticles encapsulating synthetic peptide BAR (BAR-NPs) inhibit P. gingivalis adherence more potently than free BAR. However, BAR-NPs would exhibit low retention in an open flow environment. Hypothesis: Targeting BAR-NPs to the streptococcal surface using CafA protein will enhance their efficacy. This thesis examines the effectiveness of an active learning approach in improving oral health literacy and attitude about science among at-risk students in the age range of third to sixth grades. This is done by designing and implementing a novel Oral Health Outreach module and video. Active learning components include engaging PowerPoint, oral hygiene discussion and demonstration, and finally a biofilm simulation, which utilizes glow-in-the-dark paint, dentoform models, and black lights that allow students to visualize the importance of plaque removal. Advances in culture-independent techniques have facilitated the identification of new bacterial species in periodontal lesions, such as the Gram-positive anaerobe, Filifactor alocis. Excessive Daytime Sleepiness (EDS) is the measure of ones propensity to fall asleep during normal daily activities. It has been reported in 20%-50% of adults in the United States and is the most frequent symptom of patients presenting to sleep clinics. EDS is the result of both primary hypersomnias such as narcolepsy and idiopathic hypersomnia and, more commonly, secondary hypersomnias such as sleep deprivation, psychiatric conditions, medications, illegal substances, and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).

In this research, hydroxyapatite (HA)-based ceramics were produced as suitable ceramic implants for orthopedic applications. To improve the physical, mechanical, electrical and biological properties of pure HA, we developed composite scaffolds of HA-barium titanate (BT) by cold isostatic pressing and sintering. Microstructure, crystal phases, and molecular structure were analyzed by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), respectively. The objective of this study was to identify and analyze the factors that contribute to the incidence of nonsurgical root canal therapy (NS-RCT) after the delivery of single-unit full-coverage restorations.

Insurance claims from 88,409 crown placements in the Delta Dental of Wisconsin insurance database were analyzed from the years 2008–2017. Titanium dioxide (TiO₂) nanostructures are one of the most plentiful compounds that have emerged in various fields of technology such as medicine, energy and biosensing. Various TiO₂ nanostructures (nanotubes [NTs] and nanowires) have been employed in photoelectrochemical (PEC) biosensing applications, greatly enhancing the detection of targets. TiO₂ nanostructures, used as reinforced material or coatings for the bare surface of titanium implants, are excellent additive materials to compensate titanium implants deficiencies—like poor surface interaction with surrounding tissues—by providing nanoporous surfaces and hierarchical structures.
