The goal of this article is to describe the broad curricular constructs surrounding teaching and learning about social media in dental education. This analysis takes into account timing, development, and assessment of the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and behaviors needed to effectively use social media tools as a contemporary dentist. Three developmental stages in a student's path to becoming a competent professional are described: from undergraduate to dental student, from the classroom and preclinical simulation laboratory to the clinical setting, and from dental student to licensed practitioner. Considerations for developing the dental curriculum and suggestions for effective instruction at each stage …

Objective: The purpose of this study is to compare the retention of palate-less versus complete palatal coverage dentures fitted with zirconia mucosal inserts. Materials and Methods: Fourteen male patients received upper complete dentures fitted with zirconia mucosal inserts. Half of the dentures were fabricated with complete palatal coverage (Group I) and the other half was palate-less (Group II).Retention was measured for all patients using force measurement gauge through six months follow-up period. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine if visible tattoos affected the perceptions of dental consumers toward the professionalism and credibility of dental hygienists.

Methods: An 11 item, IRB approved investigator designed survey was administered online to 203 subjects invited to participate via a commercial web source. Surveys were randomized according to respondents' birth month. Participants viewed one of three photographs of a dental hygiene model wearing short-sleeved scrubs without a tattoo, with a large sleeve tattoo on the arm or with a small tattoo on the wrist. Objectives: To investigate the prevalence and severity of tooth wear (TW) and its relationship with consumption of beverages among adults in the United States.

Methods: The National Health and Nutrition Examinations Survey data for 2003-2004 was analyzed. TW was defined as “wear on at least one surface of at least one examined tooth.” Drink/juice consumption was ascertained via a Food Frequency Questionnaire processed with Diet*Calc software to obtain the average daily consumption frequency for all queried drinks and juice categories including milk. Survey-weighted descriptive and multivariable analyses with interaction terms were performed.

This article describes a method of fabricating a labial reduction guide for laminate veneer preparations by using a digital tire tread depth gauge and orthodontic wire. The labial reduction guide can help clinicians to achieve accurate reduction of the labial surface. Minimally invasive porcelain laminate veneers have become a popular option in esthetic dentistry. Porcelain laminate veneers require only 25% to 50% of the amount of tooth reduction required for complete coverage restorations.Nevertheless, adequate labial reduction is important in creating optimal esthetics. Objective: To investigate the association between neighborhood level factors and dental visits in young adults in the United States after adjusting for individual level factors.

Methods: The National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health Wave 1 (1994-1995) to Wave III (2001-2002) was analyzed. The primary outcome of having had at least one dental visit in the previous 12 months was analyzed via a multilevel random-effects logistic model accounting for geographic clustering in Wave III and survey design clustering from Wave I. Neighborhood level covariates were defined at the census tract level.

Severe Early Childhood Caries (S-ECC) is a terribly aggressive and devastating disease that is all too common in lower socio-economic children, but none more so that what is encountered in American Indian Tribes. Nationwide, approximately 27% of 2-5 year olds have decay while 62% percent of American Indian/Alaska Native children in the same age group have a history of decay (IHS 2010, NHANES 1999-2002). INTRODUCTION: Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) often causes inflammation of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and has been treated with both systemic and intra-articular steroids, with concerns about effects on growing bones. In this study, we evaluated the impact of a macromolecular prodrug of dexamethasone (P-DEX) with inflammation-targeting potential applied systemically or directly to the TMJ.

METHODS: Joint inflammation was initiated by injecting two doses of complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA) at 1-month intervals into the right TMJs of 24 growing Sprague-Dawley male rats (controls on left side). Recent evidence has determined a phenotypic and functional heterogeneity for macrophage populations. This plasticity of macrophage function has been related to specific properties of subsets (M1 and M2) of these cells in inflammation, adaptive immune responses and resolution of tissue destructive processes. This investigation hypothesized that targeted alterations in the distribution of macrophage phenotypes in aged individuals, and with periodontitis would be skewed towards M1 inflammatory macrophages in gingival tissues. Poor oral health practices contribute to negative health outcomes for residents of long-term care facilities. The abundance of current information on the oral–systemic connection underscores the need for improved oral hygiene among all citizens but specifically for older adults, who face challenges for self-care due to sensory, mobility, endurance and cognitive deficits. Dental hygienists are oral disease prevention specialists and are trained to perform dental procedures that significantly improve a person’s oral health. BACKGROUND: Temporomandibular disorders are a group of orofacial pain conditions that are commonly identified in the general population. Like many other chronic pain conditions, they can be associated with anxiety/depression, which can be related to changes in the activity of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex. Some studies have demonstrated clinical improvement in subjects with chronic pain who are given therapeutic neuromodulation. Transcranial direct current stimulation is a noninvasive brain stimulation technique that allows the modulation of neuronal membranes. Objective: This study was conducted to compare the shear bond strengths, patterns of bond failure and enamel surfaces after debonding two ceramic brackets (ClearVu and Radiance Plus) and one standard metal bracket (Mini Uni-Twin). Background: Ceramic brackets are an esthetic alternative to metal brackets. The mean shear bond strength of ceramic brackets is significantly greater than for metal brackets. Excessive bond strength can result in pain upon debonding, damage to the bracket or permanent damage to the enamel including flaking, cracks or tooth fracture. Objectives: Compare the push-out bond strength of a dual-cured core build-up resin composite and dual-cured resin cement using total-etch adhesive for bonding fiber post to root canal dentin. Materials and Methods: Sixty extracted single-rooted human premolars were sectioned transversely in mesiodistal direction 2 mm coronal to cementoenamel junction, standard endodontically treated, post space prepared and randomly divided into two groups (n=30). วัตถุประสงค์ เพื่อศึกษาผลของการปรับสภาพผิวฟันด้วยสารคอนดิชันเนอร์ต่าง ๆ ต่อความแข็งแรงพันธะเฉือนในช่วงแรกของเรซินมอดิฟายด์กลาสไอโอโนเมอร์ต่อเคลือบฟัน วัสดุและวิธีการ แบ่งฟันกรามน้อย 55 ปี ออกเป็น 5 กลุ่ม โดยกลุ่ม 1-4 (กลุ่มทดลอง) ยึดติดแบร็กเกตด้วย สารยึดติดเรซินมอดิฟายด์กลาสไอโอโนเมอร์ (Fuji Ortho LC) โดยสารคอนดิชันเนอร์แต่ละกลุ่มดังนี้ กลุ่ม 1 ไม่ ใช้สารคอนดิชันเนอร์ กลุ่ม 2 กรดพอลิอะคริลิกเข้มข้นร้อยละ 20 กลุ่ม 3 กรดฟอสฟอริกเข้มข้นร้อยละ 37 กลุ่ม 4 สารเซลฟ์เอชชิงไพร์มเมอร์ (Transbond Plus SEP) กลุ่ม 5 (กลุ่มควบคุม) กรดฟอสฟอริกและสารยึดติดเรซิน คอมโพสิต (Transbonds XT) นําตัวอย่างกลุ่มละ 10 ชิ้นไปวัดความแข็งแรงพันธะเฉือนภายหลังการฉายแสง 5 นาที โดยเครื่องทดสอบสากล บันทึกค่าความแข็งแรงพันธะเฉือนที่ทําให้แบร์กเกตหลุดออกจากผิวฟัน คํานวณหา ค่าเฉลี่ยและส่วนเบี่ยงเบนมาตรฐาน ทําการเปรียบเทียบระหว่างกลุ่มด้วยค่าสถิติการวิเคราะห์ความแปรปรวนแบบ ทางเดียว วัดค่าการเหลืออยู่ของสารยึดติดบนตัวฟันด้วยค่าดัชนีการเหลืออยู่ของสารยึดติด ทดสอบด้วยค่าสถิติ ไคสแควร์ ที่ระดับความเชื่อมั่นร้อยละ 95 ส่วนตัวอย่างอีกกลุ่มละ 1 ชิ้นนําไปศึกษาการยึดติดระหว่างสารยึดติด และเคลือบฟันด้วยกล้องจุลทรรศน์อิเล็กตรอนแบบส่องกราด ผลการศึกษาค่าเฉลี่ยและส่วนเบี่ยงเบนมาตรฐานของความแข็งแรงพันธะเฉือนของกลุ่ม 1 2 3 4 และ 5 เท่ากับ 8.4 12.0 10.8 + 0.7 14.6 + 3.0 13.7 + 1.7 และ 21.5 + 4.0 เมกะปาสคาล ตามลําดับ ไม่พบความแตกต่างอย่างมี นัยสําคัญของค่าเฉลี่ยความแข็งแรงพันธะเฉือนระหว่างกลุ่มที่ 3 และ 4 (p = 0.433) ค่าดัชนีการเหลืออยู่ของสารยึด ติดสัมพันธ์กับชนิดของสารคอนดิชันเนอร์ …

This study aimed to investigate the opinions and experiences of Thai prosthodontic postgraduate students toward complete denture laboratory practice. Materials and methods A self-administered questionnaire was mailed to all dentists who currently enrolled in prosthodontic postgraduate programs in Thailand during the academic year 2012.
