Statement of problem

The effect of microwave brazing on the strength properties of dental casting alloys is not yet known.

Purpose

The purpose of this study was to compare the strength properties of preceramic brazed joints obtained by using a microwave oven and a conventional torch flame for a high noble alloy (Au-Pd).

Material and methods

A total of 18 tensile bars made of an Au-Pd ceramic alloy were fabricated. Six specimens were cut and joined with a high-fusing preceramic solder in a specially designed microwave oven, and 6 specimens were joined with a conventional natural gas/oxygen torch. The remaining …

Non-Surgical And Supportive Periodontal Therapy: Predictors Of Compliance, Efthimia Effie Ioannidou

Aim

To identify predictors of compliance during non-surgical and supportive periodontal therapy (SPT).

Materials and Methods

In this retrospective study, demographic, dental, medical data of 427 new patients in a private practice were collected. Data were analysed in statistical models with non-surgical therapy and SPT compliance used as dependent variables.

Results

Of the 427 patients, 17.3% never agreed to initial therapy, 10.7% never completed therapy and 20.8% completed treatment, but never entered SPT. Of the 218 SPT patients, 56% became non-attenders after a period of 20 months, 33% were erratic attenders and 10.5% were regular attenders until the end of …

P. gingivalis is a major periodontal disease causing pathogen. Gingival epithelial cells being the first line of defense, interact and internalize the bacteria evoking a cell signaling response that finally leads to the release of cytokines. IL-6 is a potent pro- inflammatory cytokine, which is one of the responsible factors for bone resorption, a clinical manifestation of periodontitis. The experimental model study hypothesizes that P. gingivalis infection increases the production of IL-6 in telomerase immortalized gingival keratinocytes (TIGKs) through up-regulation of c-Jun (AP-1 reporter). Stem cell-based regenerative therapy is a promising treatment for head and neck cancer patients that suffer from chronic dry mouth (xerostomia) due to salivary gland injury from radiation therapy. Current xerostomia therapies only provide temporary symptom relief, while permanent restoration of salivary function is not currently feasible. Here, we identified and characterized a stem cell population from adult murine submandibular glands. Of the different cells isolated from the submandibular gland, this specific population, Lin-CD24+c-Kit+Sca1+, possessed the highest capacity for proliferation, self renewal, and differentiation during serial passage in vitro. Background: Matrix metalloproteinase (MMPs) are proteins that have a unique role in immunity, tissue remodeling, and tumorigenesis. MMPs can break down extracellular components, release bioactive molecules, and act on pro-inflammatory cytokines, chemokines and other proteins to regulate varied aspects of inflammation and immunity. Nicotine (3-(1-methyl-2-pyrrolidinyl) pyridine), a key toxic component of tobacco, is thought to dysregulate matrix metalloproteinase secretion in immune cells. Background

In chronic kidney disease (CKD), inadequate nutritional intake, inflammation, and increased oxidative stress have been the major contributing factors in malnutrition pathogenesis. However, there is still a paucity of evidence assessing the magnitude of the effect of tooth loss on malnutrition in CKD populations. The authors hypothesize that among patients with CKD, tooth loss may affect nutritional status, using the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 1988 to 1994 (NHANES III).

Stainless steel wires have long been used in orthodontics. The austenitic stainless steel used in orthodontics contains approximately 18 wt% chromium and 8 wt% nickel. Nickel improves the corrosion resistance and helps maintain the austenite structure of stainless steel. Nickel is the most allergenic metal and is the most common metal associated with contact dermatitis in orthodontics. These brackets were marketed before independent scientific research was completed. Many of the early ceramic brackets used a silane coupling agent to allow for a chemical bond between the bracket and the adhesive resin. Objective: To determine the effects of mechanical vibrations produced from electric tooth brushes and a commercially available device called AcceleDent, on the resistance to sliding at the bracket-arch wire interface. Materials and Methods: All as-received wires and brackets were cleaned with 95% ethanol prior to testing. An individual metal bracket was mounted on a custom metal fixture. The custom metal fixture had a polyurethane material that resembled the mechanical feature of the human periodontal ligament. The purpose of this study was to assess the correlation of gingival recession to the following parameters in fresh cadavers: gingival thickness, buccal bone loss, buccal bone thickness, shape of bony dehiscence defect, and age. A secondary aim was to evaluate predictors for gingival recession.

Sixteen fresh cadavers were used in this study. Gingival recession, facial gingival thickness, alveolar bone loss, and buccal bone thickness were measured at teeth #6-#11 and #22-#27. The orthodontic profession is constantly seeking to improve and optimize the aesthetics of orthodontic wires since the introduction of aesthetic brackets. Nickel-titanium (NiTi) wires since their introduction to orthodontics (Andreasen and Hilleman, 1971) have been extensively researched in vitro and are used as an initial levelling and aligning archwire because of its properties of springback and superelasticity (Burstone et al., 1985; Miura et al., 1986; Leu et al., 1990; Bishara et al., 1995; Bradley et al., 1996; Biermann et al., 2007; Berzins and Roberts 2010).
