Periradicular surgery is a viable option to save natural teeth when non-surgical treatment fails or when endodontic retreatment is not feasible or contraindicated. Laboratory and animal studies have demonstrated that MTA is biocompatible, provides an excellent seal against penetrating bacteria, and promotes hard tissue healing. The purpose of this study was to provide long term (>3 years) clinical evidence for its use as a root-end filling material in endodontics. The clinical records of 294 patients who had MTA used during endodontic treatment from 1996 to 2001 were reviewed. From these, 75 patients whose root end cavities had been filled …

Modern digital lateral cephalometric images are produced by machines that vary in a number of critical features such as: 1) machine geometry, 2) movement (or lack of movement) of the x-ray source, 3) movement (or lack of movement) or x-ray detectors, 4) cephalostat geometry and 5) digital data manipulations by proprietary software. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the magnification characteristics of images produced by five commercial digital lateral cephalometric machines. Root perforations during root canal therapy have a significant negative impact on long-term prognosis of teeth. Proper treatment is critical in managing these accidental procedures. Laboratory and animal studies have demonstrated that Mineral Trioxide Aggregate (MTA) is biocompatible, provides an excellent seal against penetrating bacteria, and promotes hard tissue healing. The purpose of this study was to determine if the Biolase Waterlase Er,Cr:YSGG laser could be used as a safe and effective tool to de-bond four currently available orthodontic ceramic brackets. Changes in interpulpal temperature, enamel surface conditions and the amount of time the laser was activated to debond (sic) the ceramic brackets were evaluated. Forty human maxillary premolars were divided into four groups of ten. Prior to direct bonding, all extracted teeth were impressed and duplicated in Araldite epoxy resin as the control surface. PURPOSE: To compare the effectiveness of a Gallium Aluminum Arsenide (GaAlAs) diode laser and a light emitting diode (LED) on periodontal ligament fibroblast cell proliferative rates.

METHODS and MATERIALS: PDLF obtained from freshly extracted permanent teeth were cultured under standard conditions until a subconfluent monolayer was present. The next section took 5 days to complete. On day 1, the initial cell concentration of 700 uL/cm² was plated on 96-well assay plates and placed in a CO₂ incubator at 37° C for 24 hours. This patient satisfaction study analyzed the level of patient satisfaction with the dental hygiene clinic at East Tennessee State University, Johnson City, TN. The purpose of the study was to determine if there was a statistically significant influence of demographic characteristics of the patients and the affective behavior of the care providers on level of patient satisfaction. The purpose of this study was to determine the perceived relationship among miswak, the toothbrush, and toothbrush-plus-miswak usage on oral health beliefs and behaviors of Jordanians. To examine these relationships, a self-designed questionnaire was distributed to a convenience sample of 150 adult subjects (ages 18-60 years) seeking dental care at the health center, and two private dental clinics in Irbid, Jordan. Via the Oral Health Beliefs and Behaviors of Jordanian People Questionnaire, participants were asked to select one and sometimes more than one response regarding their perceived oral health status and oral care behaviors. In this case report, we would like to present an alternative surgical technique for the treatment of the bilateral prominent mandibular angles by using a custom-made resin splint (template). The prefabricated template provided a precise outline for the osteotomy, which alleviated the uncertainty of the osseous cut. Furthermore, masseter muscle myomectomy was not necessary in this case which decreased morbidity, and procedure and recovery time, while assuring a more symmetric outcome.

Presentation Of An Epithelioid Cell Histiocytoma On The Ventral Tongue, Yeshwant B. Rawal, John R. Kalmar, Brian S. Shumway, Susan R. Mallery

The epithelioid cell histiocytoma (ECH) is a polypoidal benign tumor of superficial connective tissue that is often diagnosed as a pyogenic granuloma. ECHs are speculated to originate from dermal dendritic subunits and are composed of 2 primary cell populations, ie, CD34⁺ primitive fibroblastic dendrocytes and factor XIIIa⁺ histiocytes. Although dendritic subunits are distributed throughout most collagenous tissues inclusive of oral mucosa, to date, all reported cases of ECH have been cutaneous lesions. ECHs' putative pathogenesis entails activation of CD34⁺ “sentinel” reserve dendrocytes, followed by an influx of histiocytes and mast cells. Juxtacrine communication increases release of wound …

Introduction of a device to pre-heat composites prior to curing has prompted this study to evaluate the effect of pre-heating on the surface hardness and depth of cure of composite resins. Factors considered in this study included curing time (10, 20 and 40 seconds), curing temperature (70, 100 and 140 degrees F), curing light type (halogen and LED), and composite type (hybrid and microhybrid).

The surface hardness portion of the study included 180 samples (5 of each of 36 combinations of factors) prepared according to the ADA standard for surface hardness. Four Knoop hardness measurements were obtained from both the …

Introduction: The clinicians' decision regarding immediate loading is largely determined by the assessment of initial stability of the dental implant. Computed tomographic assessment of recipient site bone quality, insertion resistance torque and post-insertion resonance frequency are currently the only objective methods of measurement establishing initial stability.

Purpose: A study was designed to measure resonance frequency of root form dental implants placed in cadaver jaws. The resonance frequency values were compared to previous subjective and objective data reported in prior studies in the series.

Mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) has been shown to promote regeneration of the periodontal apparatus when used as a repair material in furcation perforations. Two variations of MTA (Gray and White) have been introduced to the dental market. The purpose of this study was to histologically compare the in vivo response to immediate furcation perforation repair using gray or white MTA in beagle dogs.

Under general anesthesia, non-surgical root canal therapy and furcal perforations were performed on sixteen mandibular premolars of eight 2-year old beagle dogs. The perforations were immediately repaired with either white (n=8) or gray (n=8) MTA. The animals …

The purpose of this research was to determine the frictional resistance of four self-ligating brackets and two conventional bracket systems using two different types of orthodontic arch wires in both wet and dry fields. Six different brands of upper right central incisor brackets with 0.018-in slots were evaluated. Group A : self-ligating bracket: Opal (Ultradent), Damon 2 (Ormco), Time (American Orthodontics), In-Ovation (GAC). Group B: conventional-ligating: Virage (American Orthodontics), and Mini-Twin (Unitek) served as the control brackets. The aim of this study was to compare the following 3 methods of assessing alveolar ridge dimensions prior to placement of dental implants: 1) ridge mapping measurement before surgical flap reflection using a caliper; 2) direct caliper measurement following surgical exposure of the bone, and 3) measurement using images from cone beam computerized tomography.

Sixteen subjects having 25 sites for planned implant placement or ridge augmentation were recruited. An acrylic stent was fabricated for each patient. The stent provided 3 buccal/lingual pairs of consistent measurement points for each implant site, located 4, 7 and 10 mm from the summit of …
