A Comparison Of Overbite Relapse To Age, Interincisal Angle And Lower Face Height In Class Ii Deepbite Cases, James E. Macalpine Jul 1976

A Comparison Of Overbite Relapse To Age, Interincisal Angle And Lower Face Height In Class Ii Deepbite Cases, James E. Macalpine

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Patients with deep skeletal or dental bites before treatment have been noted to have a greater tendency towards relapsing to this deepbite following orthodontic treatment than do patients whose malocclusion showed a more ideal overbite relationship before treatment.

This study utilized patients selected from Rocky Mountain Data Systems for their deepbite trends. Three areas were compared to overbite relapse, 1) age, 2) interincisal angle 3) lower face height.

Results of this study indicate that overbite cases that have the most problems in retention were skeletal deepbites. This study also indicates that there was no disadvantage to early treatment, that the …

Evaluation Of A Precision Filing Test For Predicting Dental Technic Performance, Douglass Roberts Jun 1976

Evaluation Of A Precision Filing Test For Predicting Dental Technic Performance, Douglass Roberts

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

A precision filing test involving the reduction of a steel cylinder to a perfect cube with the use of a hand file and bench vise was devised as a diagnostic tool for the early detection of freshman students having technic difficulties. The test was administered to 188 freshman dental students in three classes at Loma Linda University, School of Dentistry. Subjective and objective scores were then statistically compared with subsequent technic and clinic grades of the students. The simple linear correlations between the predictor test variable and criterion grades were statistically significant for one class and for the combined classes …

Soft Tissue Profile Prediction: An Evaluation Of Methods, Roger H. Zierenberg Jr. Jun 1976

Soft Tissue Profile Prediction: An Evaluation Of Methods, Roger H. Zierenberg Jr.

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Forty cases demonstrating at least 3 mm of lingual movement of the upper incisors were analyzed to determine the soft-tissue prediction accuracy of the Holdaway and the Ricketts methods. Initial analysis was performed by comparing predictions based on pre-treatment cephalometric tracings to post-treatment tracings. Lack of congruency was considered error and statistical analysis followed. The Ricketts method was shown to be superior for upper lip prediction on the combined 40 cases. Neither method proved superior in predicting the lower lip.

Further analysis involved segregating the cases according to individual functional lip abnormalities and again comparing the two methods for accuracy. …

The Prediction Of Circumferential Tooth Measurements As An Aid In Orthodontic Banding, Roland D. W. Neufeld Jun 1976

The Prediction Of Circumferential Tooth Measurements As An Aid In Orthodontic Banding, Roland D. W. Neufeld

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

A correlation was established among the circumferential measurements of the teeth in a given individual. The maxillary central incisor was selected as the predictor tooth to predict the remaining teeth in the set. The circumferences of the teeth were predicted within + two band sizes 69% of the time. Agreement in prediction percentages was found using measurements taken intraorally.

Gingival Condition In Areas Of Minimal And Appreciable Widths Of Keratinized Gingiva, Myles C. Miyasato Jun 1976

Gingival Condition In Areas Of Minimal And Appreciable Widths Of Keratinized Gingiva, Myles C. Miyasato

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

This investigation evaluated the gingival condition of areas with minimal (less than or equal to 1.0 millimeter) and appreciable (greater than or equal to 2.0 millimeters) widths of keratinized gingiva.

Sixteen dental, dental hygiene, and dental assisting students and dental faculty who had contralateral or unilateral areas of minimal and appreciable widths of keratinized gingiva on the mid-buccal surface of mandibular bicuspids were examined. Gingival exudate, plaque, gingival inflammation based on color change and/or swelling and bleeding on probing were evaluated. The results showed that all areas examined were plaque free. Three of 32 areas showed clinical gingival inflammation and …

The Effects Of Topically Applied Citric Acid On Periodontally Diseased Root Surfaces, John S. Garrett Jun 1976

The Effects Of Topically Applied Citric Acid On Periodontally Diseased Root Surfaces, John S. Garrett

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The goal of reconstructive periodontal therapy is new connective tissue attachment to periodontally diseased root surfaces. Recently Register (1973) and Register and Burdick (1975) have reported accelerated reattachment and cementogenesis when citric acid was applied to surgically created root surface defects. There are apparently no reports in the literature regarding the effects of citric acid on periodontally diseased root surfaces. This study was designed to determine the effects of topically applied citric acid on periodontally diseased root surfaces using the scanning (SEM) and transmission (TEM) electron microscopes.

Twenty three human teeth, nineteen extracted because of periodontal disease and four bicuspids …

The Treatment Timing Of Dolicofacial, Retrognathic Facial Patterns, George B. Clarke Jr. Jun 1976

The Treatment Timing Of Dolicofacial, Retrognathic Facial Patterns, George B. Clarke Jr.

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The general consensus among orthodontists today is that the dolicofacial, retrognathic patient can present one of the most challenging problems for conventional orthodontic therapy. It is often stated that many of these patients will have more mandibular opening rotation during orthodontic treatment than the mesofacial or brachyfacial patient. This opening rotation is compounded when the use of cervical traction and Class 11 mechanics are incorporated into the treatment plan. Because of the problems involved with the treatment of these types of patients, it has been suggested in the literature that there may be an ideal age to start orthodontic therapy …

The Functional Stress Analysis Of Post Reinforcement, Robert V. Bravin Jun 1976

The Functional Stress Analysis Of Post Reinforcement, Robert V. Bravin

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Research was undertaken in order to functionally test the reinforcement capabilities of several commonly used, standard manufactured posts. One hundred and ten maxillary lateral incisors were mounted in plastic, reinforced with the posts at different levels, and then restored with standardized crowns. These teeth along with control groups, were then placed in a custom, mounting jig which properly positioned them for the stress testing. The forces required for fracturing these teeth were recorded and subsequently analyzed.

The statistical analysis of the experimental results demonstrated that posts do not reinforce teeth as supposed; they may, in fact, weaken them. Analysis also …

Histology Of Apical Tissue : A Comparative Study Of Sargenti Formula, Short Vs. Overfill, James G. Schulze May 1976

Histology Of Apical Tissue : A Comparative Study Of Sargenti Formula, Short Vs. Overfill, James G. Schulze

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Four Stump-tail monkeys (Macaca spiciosa) were used for this study to analyze, on a cellular level, the apical tissue of teeth overfilled versus teeth filled short 1-3 mm. of the radiographic apex with the Sargenti formula. In each animal four incisors were filled short and four incisors were overfilled. A final sample size consisted of 28 teeth. The time periods ranged from 48 hours to 120 days. After analysis of the histology it can be stated that the teeth filled short showed no inflammation to moderate inflammation in the periapical tissues. In teeth overfilled there was a range from moderate …

Determination Of Lead Content In Apical Tissue Following Root Canal Obturation With Sargenti's Formula, G. Merle Hickok May 1976

Determination Of Lead Content In Apical Tissue Following Root Canal Obturation With Sargenti's Formula, G. Merle Hickok

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Four Stump-tail monkeys were used to help determine if the lead in Sargenti's formula diffuses out into the apical tissue while confined entirely within the root canal. In each animal two teeth were filled with Sargenti's formula 1-2 millimeters short of the radiographic apex, and two teeth were filled with gutta percha and Proco-Sol sealer for controls, making a total sample size of sixteen. The time ranged from 48 hours to 120 days. Lead analysis using the spectrophotometric method showed a higher lead content in the teeth filled with Sargenti's formula than with the gutta percha controls.

Growth Augmentation With Activators, John R. Sibley Apr 1976

Growth Augmentation With Activators, John R. Sibley

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

This research was performed to determine if bony changes could be effected by activator treatment and how stable this treatment is.

From a sample of twenty-seven cases with before activator treatment cephalometric radiographs. Rocky Mountain Data Systems provided growth projections, with and without edgewise treatment, for the period of time each patient was in treatment. These forecasts were compared to the post-treatment cephalograms to analyze the orthopedic effects of activator treatment with normal growth and with edgewise therapy.

Nine of the twenty-seven case treated sample responded to recall for post-treatment cephalograms and were analyzed for relapse.

It was apparent that …
