Hallmark features of Alzheimer's disease (AD) include elevated accumulation of aggregated Aβ40 and Aβ42 peptides, hyperphosphorylated Tau (p-Tau), and neuroinflammation. Emerging evidence indicated that interleukin-34 (IL-34) contributes to AD and inflammatory osteolysis via the colony-stimulating factor-1 receptor (CSF-1r). In addition, CSF-1r is also activated by macrophage colony-stimulating factor-1 (M-CSF). While the role of M-CSF in bone physiology and pathology is well addressed, it remains controversial whether IL-34-mediated signaling promotes osteolysis, neurodegeneration, and neuroinflammation in relation to AD. In this study, we injected 3x-Tg mice with mouse recombinant IL-34 protein over the calvaria bone every other day for 42 days. Then, …

The continuing transmission of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) remains a world-wide 21st-century public health emergency of concern. Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has caused greater than 600 million cases of COVID-19 and over 6 million deaths globally. COVID-19 continues to be a highly transmissible disease despite efforts by public health officials and healthcare providers to manage and control the disease. Variants identified in selected worldwide epicenters add to the complexity of vaccine efficacy, overage, and antibody titer maintenance and bioactivity. The identification of the SARS-CoV-2 variants is described with respect to evading protective efficacy of COVID-19 vaccines and …

The immune system plays an important role in the skeletal system during bone repair and regeneration. The controlled release of biological factors from the immune system could facilitate and optimize the bone remodeling process through the regulation of the activities of bone cells. This study aimed to determine the effect of the controlled delivery of immunomodulatory biologicals on bone regeneration. Immunostimulatory cytosine-phosphate-guanosine oligodeoxynucleotides (CpG ODN) and glucosylxanthone Mangiferin (MAG)-embedded microbeads were incubated with P. gingivalis-challenged splenocytes, or co-cultured with RAW264.7 cells. The effect of CpG ODN/MAG-containing microbeads on bone regeneration was then tested in vivo in a mouse alveolar bone …

Repair Of An Extensive External Cervical Resorption Lesion Using Intentional Replantation With Crown Rotation., Motoki Okamoto, Yoko Asahi, Henry Fergus Duncan, Nanako Kuriki, Yusuke Takahashi, Mikako Hayashi

HPD Articles

Treatment of large external cervical resorption (ECR) lesions may be compromised, rendering the tooth unrestorable. Intentional replantation is a potential treatment option depending on the site and extent of ECR. We present a case of a large ECR successfully managed with intentional replantation with rotation of the tooth. The female patient consulted the hospital clinic, with an extensive palatal ECR on the maxillary lateral incisor. Routine planar radiographs and cone-beam computed tomography demonstrated a larger palatal than the ECR lesion (Heithersay Class III and Patel's Class 2Bp) not amenable to nonsurgical treatment. Intentional replantation after short-term extrusion was planned. The …

BACKGROUND: The association between periodontitis and post-bronchodilator lung function is unclear. We aimed to determine the associations between symptoms of severe periodontitis (SSP) and post-bronchodilator lung function in the Chinese population.

METHODS: A cross-sectional study (China Pulmonary Health study) was conducted from 2012 to 2015 in a large Chinese nationally representative sample of 49,202 participants aged 20-89 years. Data on demographic characteristics and periodontal symptoms of participants were collected by questionnaire. Participants who had at least one of the two severe symptoms (tooth mobility and natural tooth loss) in the past year were defined to have SSP, which was set …

Periodontal Regeneration Risk Assessment In The Treatment Of Intrabony Defects., Robert A. Levine, Muhammad H A Saleh, Debora R. Dias, Jeffrey Ganeles, Maurício G. Araújo, Franck Renouard, Harold M. Pinsky, Preston D. Miller, Hom-Lay Wang

HPD Articles

BACKGROUND: Regenerative approaches performed in periodontics seems to be efficient in treating intrabony defects. There are, however, many factors that may affect the predictability of the regenerative procedures. The present article aimed to propose a new risk assessment tool for treating periodontal intrabony defects by regenerative therapy.

METHODS: Different variables that could affect the success of a regenerative procedure were considered based on their impact on (i) the wound healing potential, promoting wound stability, cells, and angiogenesis, or (ii) the ability to clean the root surface and maintain an optimal plaque control or (iii) aesthetics (risk for gingival recession).

RESULTS: …

Periodontitis In Patients With Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, Simran Agarwal, Deepthi Gangaram, Mir Saleem

Biology Faculty Articles

Periodontitis is a chronic, inflammatory disease that is characterized by swollen gums, degradation of jaw structure, and potentially tooth loss. Like Periodontitis, Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus is also highly prevalent and largely multifactorial. Type 2 Diabetes is a condition in which higher than normal blood glucose levels cannot be properly maintained as the body’s normal mechanism of maintaining proper blood glucose levels, the release of insulin from pancreatic islet β-cells, becomes ineffective. The purpose of this literature review is to explore the relationship between the incidences of Periodontitis and Type 2 Diabetes. The risk that Type 2 Diabetes poses for …
