Activated Charcoal Versus A Chemical Whitening Agent: Effect On Human Enamel, Hien Thai Doan
Activated Charcoal Versus A Chemical Whitening Agent: Effect On Human Enamel, Hien Thai Doan
Master's Theses (2009 -)
Objective: For many years, the conventional method to achieve a white smile has been chemical regimens such as peroxide compounds. Previous studies suggest risks associated with chemical procedures, so many are seeking out alternative options such as utilizing activated charcoal. Since this new method is rapidly trending, there have not been many scientific studies on how utilizing activated charcoal can affect the mechanical/physical properties of tooth structure. The primary objective of this study was to investigate the effect of activated charcoal on enamel’s mechanical/physical properties and compare it to a conventional tooth whitening method (carbamide peroxide). Materials and Methods: Extracted …
Color Characterization Of Color Changing Orthodontic Adhesives, Megan Fried
Color Characterization Of Color Changing Orthodontic Adhesives, Megan Fried
Master's Theses (2009 -)
Objective:A popular product to facilitate removal of excess adhesive during bonding of orthodontic appliances is a color changing adhesive. Before polymerization, these materials are a bright color but upon curing, manufacturers claim they become translucent. After debonding, there is often resin embedded within the enamel, so the appearance of these materials after polymerization can affect the esthetics of a patient’s dentition. The purpose of this study was to analyze the color characteristics of various orthodontic color changing adhesives and determine if there is a significant difference in color changing capabilities and in translucency after polymerization between products. Methods:Grengloo and Blugloo …

Autoignition And Sooting Characteristics Of Iso-Octane And Ethanol In An Optical Rapid Compression Machine, Richard John Kempf
Master's Theses (2009 -)
To effectively reduce particulate emissions and maximize the effectiveness of renewable fuels entering the industrial and transportation markets, an accurate understanding of the combustion characteristics of these fuels is a necessary undertaking. Typical engines used in the heavy-duty engine industry primarily rely on mixing-controlled combustion, which has the potential to produce soot under locally rich combustion conditions. A rapid compression machine (RCM) is an experimental reaction vessel used to investigate the ignition and pollutant behaviors of fuels at compressed conditions relevant to engine studies. In this study, an RCM has been prepared with line-of-sight optical accessibility such that a laser …

Background
Syphilis is a sexually-transmitted infectious disease caused by Treponema pallidum. Cases of primary and secondary syphilis are on the rise in the United States, with a 14.4% increase in new cases noted from 2017 to 2018 and an escalation of 71% between the years 2014 and 2018. Fulfilling its nickname of “the great imitator,” oral manifestations of syphilis may mimic a variety of infectious, neoplastic, or immune-mediated processes, both clinically and histopathologically. This large spectrum of appearances can create a diagnostic challenge to the clinician and/or pathologist, leading to delay in diagnosis or misdiagnosis.

Bending And Phase Transformation Properties Of A Force Gradient Nickel-Titanium Orthodontic Wire, Brinda Shah
Bending And Phase Transformation Properties Of A Force Gradient Nickel-Titanium Orthodontic Wire, Brinda Shah
Master's Theses (2009 -)
Objective: Conventional nickel-titanium (NiTi) archwires have widespread application in orthodontics due to their unique properties and ability to move teeth with light, continuous forces, but a shortcoming is that they apply near-uniform force along anterior and posterior teeth. Since the force needed to effectively move teeth is a function of the root surface area and bony support, these archwires cause single-rooted teeth to move more than the multi-rooted molars. With the advent of laser-engineered force gradient NiTi orthodontic archwires, individual forces may be applied to different segments or individual teeth of the arch to maximize tooth movement. The aim of …
