An Anthropometric Study Of The Face And Dentition Of The Apache Indian Population At The Stewart Indian School, Garold D. Becker

Cephalometric and dental morphology records were obtained from forty-three contemporary Apache Indian subjects (living at the Stewart Boarding School for Indians, Carson City, Nevada) to study the cranial, facial, skeletal and dentitional patterns and compare discriminately to other contemporary North American Indian groups: Pima, Papago, Mayo and Chamula. Materials on other Indian tribes considered were obtained from studies completed at Loma Linda University. The data obtained from dental morphology analysis of the Apache Indian subjects was com pared to the Mongoloid Master Pattern (1-4) as described by Moorrees (1957).

A study of orthodontic treatment results was made on forty patients treated by the graduate students Loma Linda University. The purpose of the study was to determine the treatment changes in patients treated in the graduate clinic. The study was based on the findings of the cephalometric and full mouth radiographs. The distribution of the malocclusions were similar to those found in other studies. The group of forty patients was divided for paired comparisons of type of malocclusion, length of treatment, and extraction of teeth. Statistical correlations were computed on every change investigated in this study.

Mandibular resting posture is the positional expression of cranial-facial morphology and the myotatic reflex of its contiguous musculature.

Alteration of sensory input to the main sensory, mesencephalic and motor nucleus of the Fifth nerve in a myotalic reflex system, theoretically should result in changes or alteration in motor response.

The purpose of this study was then to examine post interference phenomena as noted by amplitude variations within muscles during centric occlusion and cyclic chewing and to block its expression via mandibular nerve anesthesia.

The Mayo Indian of Sonora, Mexico, was selected for a study of dental morphology. The objectives of the investigation were to determine the extent to which the Mayo conformed to the four criteria of the Mongoloid dental master pattern, and to compare eight other specific tooth morphologic characteristics with like studies on Mongoloid and non-Mongoloid peoples. Plaster casts were made on a sample of forty-one Mayos.

The results of the study indicate that Mayos exhibit a 46 percent frequency of shovel-shape maxillary incisors, classifying "moderate shovel" and "shovel" together. The maxillary central-lateral width difference of 1.5 mm is small compared …

Development Of A Positioning Device For Use In Conjunction With Panoral Radiography, Ray M. Hymer

A cephalometric positioning device has been developed for use on the XRM Panorex X-Ray machine. Tests have demonstrated that the variability in producing serial radiographs with this device is comparable to, or less than, that currently accepted in conventional radiographic cephalometry.

Two procedures for obtaining serial radiographs were employed. Two patients were used for the first procedure and three patients were used in the second procedure.

In the first procedure each patient was positioned in the device and two radiographs were taken in sequence without disturbing the patient.

The mechanism of bone deposition and resorption, under stress, is incompletely understood. The direct piezoelectric properties of bone have been suggested as playing an active role in the internal morphology of bone tissue.

This study was designed to fabricate an apparatus and develop a technique to measure, quantitatively, the direct piezoelectric effect of the crystallites of bone.

In vitro studies were done with bone samples taken from bovine femur. The samples were subjected to stress loading and were observed to exhibit a pressure-induced electrical phenomenon. The amplitude of the potentials generated was dependent upon the magnitude of the bony deformation. …

The Facial Complex Of The Mayo Indian: A Radiographic Cephalometric Study, David G. Webster

In order to investigate the characteristics of the facial complex of the Mayo Indian and to make comparisons between the facial complex of the Mayo Indian and the facial complex observed in other ethnic groups, measures of facial angles and linear relationships were obtained from a group of Mayo Indians in the state of Sonora, Mexico.

A simple of thirty subjects, seventeen boys and thirteen girls, with a mean age of 18.3 years was selected for this study. The criteria for selection was based on the integrity of the dental arches, occlusion and tooth morphology. Plaster casts and cephalometric x-rays …

A Cephalometric Comparison Of The Chamula, Mayo And Navajo Indians, Norman C. Bunker

Lateral head x-rays were obtained on selected samples of 24 Chamula, 29 Mayo and 39 Navajo Indians for cephalometric comparison.

Cephalometric evaluation was carried out by means of the Bjork analysis. Mean values for each of the Indian groups were determined and compared with each other and with the mean values of a group of Swedish conscripts studied by Bjork. The mean values were statistically analyzed and and subjected to the Student's "t" test to determine the significant levels of differences.

Occlusal Patterns And Tooth Morphology In The Navajo Indians Of Monument Valley, Utah, Leroy C. Trnavsky

The occlusal patterns and morphology of the dentition of the Navajo Indians were studied and compared to those of populations of known Mongoloid ancestry. Thirteen dento-anthropomorphic characteristics were studied from plaster casts obtained from fifty-four Navajo Indians from the Monument Valley area of Utah. The thirteen characteristics included were:

1. Degree of shovel-shape of the maxillary centrals and laterals.
2. Presence of a winged appearance in the maxillary centrals.
3. Mesiodistal crown diameters of the maxillary centrals and laterals.
4. Type of lingual tubercle on the maxillary centrals and laterals.

Masseter And Temporal Muscle Adaptability To Interproximal Contact Disruption : An Electromyographic Study, Robert E. French

In this study an attempt was made to determine the amount of interproximal contact disruption necessary to initiate an electromyographically discernable deviation in the masticatory musculature. Ten adult subjects with adjudged normal occlusions were used. An additional study was under taken to determine the time necessary for the right and left temporal and masseter muscles to accommodate this disruption. Myographic recordings were taken of the subjects while closing firmly in centric occlusion and chewing Dentyne gum first on the right side, then on the left.

The relationship between stress and bony architecture has long been recognized, but the actual cellular machanism which causes the alteration is still somewhat vague. Piezoelectric properties and bioelectric potentials have been proposed as partial answers.

It is the purpose of this investigation to better understand and correlate the relationship of electric potentials or bioelectric potentials to the formation and transformation of physiologic bone.

This study was initiated to compare electromyographically the activity of the masseter and temporal muscles during the early retentional period in orthodontic patients. Electromyographic recordings were taken at the following times: (1) before typical edgewise appliance was removed, (2) at time of retainer insertion, (3) after eight to twelve weeks of retainer wearing, and (4) one day following occlusal equilibration. Electromyograms from the orthodontic group of subjects were compared with electromyograms from a group of subjects with normal occlusion, and a group of subjects with untreated Class II, Division 1 malocclusions. In a pilot anthropometric study of 52 Navajo Indians of Monument Valley, Utah, the incidence of dental caries, permanent tooth periapical root resorption, and alveolar bone loss was assessed. The relationship of tooth malpositioning to the specific parameter was subsequently determined.

The sample was divided into arbitrary age groups.

Periapical roentgenograms were taken of each subject and were used in the assessment of dental caries, periapical root resorption, and alveolar bone loss. Data from a specially prepared examination sheet augmented the findings from the roentgenograms.

A random sampling of 54 Navajo Indians was examined and a selective group of 20 subjects presenting harmonious facial profiles and good occlusions were taken from this random sampling for specific comparison with Caucasian and other ethnic groups.

The methods used in this study are as follows: Plaster casts of Maxillary and Mandibular dental arches, profile photographs and lateral cephalometric X-rays. The cephalometric X-rays were traced in the standard manner on both Downs' and Riedel's analyses. The mean values for the Navajo group were compared with the mean values established for Caucasians by Downs and Riedel. The comparison was subjected …
