Abstract

Background and significance: Dental caries is the most common infectious disease in childhood, causing negative long and short term effects in a child’s life. Children living in poverty are twice as likely to be affected by dental caries compared to those living above the poverty level. Of this poverty group, Mexican-American children are the most affected. In the US-Mexico border communities 83% of the population is Hispanic with the majority of them being of Mexican descent, and 30% of those live in poverty. "Purpose: Interprofessional education (IPE) is a means of fostering integration and collaboration between health care professions. This study evaluated the effect of an IPE educational module on the oral manifestations of menopause. Methods: This mixed-method study used a convenience sample of dental hygiene (DH) and physician assistants (PA) students. Pre- and posttests collected quantitative data using a modified Readiness for Interprofessional Learning Survey (RIPLS), and a PI-designed knowledge of menopause test to determine students attitudes and learning. Students participated in a one-time workshop that included an educational lecture and a case study exercise using a pseudo-standardized patient. Students worked in …

The population of special needs patients is increasing. The oral health and hygiene of incarcerated populations, both in the United States and globally, is known to be poorer than that of the general population. This study examined the prevalence of dental caries and periodontal disease and the relationships between oral health status and the oral health knowledge, attitudes, and practices of jail inmates housed in a large metropolitan jail located in the midwestern United States. This cross-sectional study collected data from 100 inmates using a 21-item closed-ended questionnaire in addition to oral examinations conducted by the jail's dentist to determine the extent of dental caries and periodontal disease …

Poor oral care is detrimental to the overall health of the population. In the United States, oral health diseases affect millions of individuals, especially children and adolescents. Guided by the health belief model, the purpose of this study was to identify parents' perceived barriers to oral health care access among their 5- to 10-year-old children. A phenomenological approach was used to gather data and thematically analyze interview data from 20 parents who were recruited from a health center in the northeastern United States. Factors such as socioeconomic status, age, race, and lack of dental insurance benefits inhibit the ability of many to obtain preventative oral health care. The aim of this study was to explore the effect of preventive oral health treatment and education at reduced-fee dental hygiene facilities on the oral health behaviors and perceptions of socioeconomically deprived persons within the state of Georgia. Although we know that children covered by Medicaid often do not receive needed dental services, the extent of the problem in Maine is not fully understood. In particular, rural communities in Maine may face challenges for families to access dental services for their children given low reimbursement rates and fewer available providers. This project addresses these gaps in knowledge by examining MaineCare- funded utilization and dental care access for children with MaineCare in four rural Maine towns in the Lakes Region.

Severe Early Childhood Caries (S-ECC) is a terribly aggressive and devastating disease that is all too common in lower socio-economic children, but none more so that what is encountered in American Indian Tribes. Nationwide, approximately 27% of 2-5 year olds have decay while 62% percent of American Indian/Alaska Native children in the same age group have a history of decay (IHS 2010, NHANES 1999-2002). Phthalates are chemicals that are widely used in daily products and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastics, mainly because of their ability to enhance flexibility and durability. The presence of phthalates in various products contributes to the substantial exposure that all consumers may experience. Continuity in phthalate exposure has several side effects, including endocrine disruption, neurological damage, asthma, hormonal imbalances, obesity, infertility, genital defects, and testicular cancer. The purpose of this research experiment was to determine the Dioctyl phthalate (DEHP) concentration of PVC plastic parts of toothbrushes. This report summarizes evaluation findings from Phase III and assesses change in oral health and healthy weight screening rates, referrals and related office system procedures in participating practices. The report also highlights challenges encountered and lessons learned in implementing changes to office systems, in responding to state policy changes, and in collecting and tracking oral health and healthy weight measures at the practice-level to inform quality improvement.

Thailand has become well-known in Asia for its innovative public health programs and has also made significant strides towards improving oral health. The Thai approach to providing accessible healthcare for all its citizens could serve as a potential model for other countries throughout Southeast Asia. Based on a 3 week visit to shadow a practicing public health dentist, I was able to gain an insight into how their universal healthcare system functions – both its successes and challenges.
