A Cephalometric Comparison Of The Chamula, Mayo And Navajo Indians, Norman C. Bunker

Lateral head x-rays were obtained on selected samples of 24 Chamula, 29 Mayo and 39 Navajo Indians for cephalometric comparison.

Cephalometric evaluation was carried out by means of the Bjork analysis. Mean values for each of the Indian groups were determined and compared with each other and with the mean values of a group of Swedish conscripts studied by Bjork. The mean values were statistically analyzed and and subjected to the Student's "t" test to determine the significant levels of differences.

Results revealed that in comparing the three Indian groups significant differences do appear. They are few and general concordance …

A random sampling of 54 Navajo Indians was examined and a selective group of 20 subjects presenting harmonious facial profiles and good occlusions were taken from this random sampling for specific comparison with Caucasian and other ethnic groups.

The methods used in this study are as follows: Plaster casts of Maxillary and Mandibular dental arches, profile photographs and lateral cephalometric X-rays. The cephalometric X-rays were traced in the standard manner on both Downs' and Riedel's analyses. A comparative cephalometric study was made of nineteen cases, fourteen of which were patients under treatment at the Department of Orthodontics, School of Dentistry, Loma Linda University. The remainder were individuals considered to have normal occlusions.

The review of the literature emphasized the plethora of analyses and the fact that cephalometry is a tool that must be mastered if the orthodontist is to give the best service. Although panoral radiography employing various techniques has been described in the literature since 1949, no information is available relative to its application in quantification of positional charge of the hard tissues of the oral region.

An assessment of the radiographic equipment available to this investigator for quantification studies seemed imperative before embarking on this research.
