The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association

The Michigan Dental Association (MDA) Foundation, a 501(c)3 non-profit, works to promote better dental health and support the future dental workforce through educational scholarships. The Foundation’s impact is increasing yearly, evidenced by a 42% increase in scholarship awards in 2024, providing $44,000 to 15 recipients. It also provides grants to statewide organizations delivering dental care to uninsured, impoverished, and underserved populations, awarding $141,500 in 2025. A high-profile program is the biannual Michigan Mission of Mercy (MOM), which provided over $1.1 million in donated care in Flint in 2024. Support is generated through various fundraisers, including the Year-End Fundraising Campaign.

Credentialing dental assistants is presented as a method to enhance productivity and address workforce shortages; currently, only about 15% of Michigan dental assistants are Registered Dental Assistants (RDAs). A case study at Thunder Bay Community Health Service, an FQHC in Northern Michigan, illustrates success, where RDAs perform expanded functions—like placing restorations and monitoring nitrous oxide—boosting clinic productivity by 16%. The clinic supports its dental assistants by covering education and exam expenses and providing study time during work hours. This investment improves job satisfaction, confidence, morale, and patient communication among staff, strengthening employee retention.

Sturge Weber Syndrome is a Phakomatoses group of neurocutaneous disorders. They manifest in the dermal, neural, ocular, and oral regions due to a mutation in the GNAQ gene. These lesions often are unilateral following the course of the trigeminal nerve.Here we present a case of 54-year-old woman with a history of glaucoma with a unilateral reddish-purple discoloration of the palate and a port-wine stain limited to the left side of her face. The clinical course of Sturge-Weber syndrome is quite complex and necessitates a multidisciplinary approach. Periodontitis and type 2 diabetes mellitus are associated with each other in a bidirectional relationship. The mechanism by which diabetes affects periodontitis is understood to be due to the inflammatory effects of hyperglycemia (high blood glucose levels) and a hospitable environment for sugar-consuming bacteria. Periodontitis is known to be associated with higher levels of glycated hemoglobin (HbA_1c), a long-term measurement of blood glucose control, and treatment of periodontitis reduces HbA_1c. Inflammation caused by periodontitis induces insulin resistance (which leads to higher blood glucose levels), but due to the complex nature of inflammation it is difficult to …

It examines the role of the DOE in the accreditation process, preserving access to financial aid, ensuring licensure eligibility, and upholding civil rights protections. The authors contend that proposals to dismantle the DOE risk undermining quality assurance, public trust, and equitable access to the profession. Without viable alternatives, preserving federal oversight remains an ethical imperative to protect students, patients, and the integrity of the dental profession.

Digital media enables the rapid dissemination of scientific oral health information from subject experts to the public. However, it also poses significant risks by facilitating the dissemination of misinformation and disinformation, thereby blurring the boundaries between truth and fallacy. This paper characterizes the decay of scientific truth in policymaking, characterized by increased public debate about scientific facts and a decline in confidence in science. It describes psychological mechanisms, such as confirmation bias and motivated reasoning, and social dynamics, including algorithm-driven content distribution and echo chambers, that accelerate the circulation of misleading science information. Background: Cervical cancer remains the fourth most common cancer among women globally and a leading cause of cancer-related mortality in India. Despite being largely preventable through screening, uptake remains suboptimal due to socio-cultural and systemic barriers.

Methods: A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 300 women aged ≥20 years residing in urban and rural areas of Mysuru. Data were collected using a pre-tested, semi-structured questionnaire and analyzed with SPSS version 30.
