Fenestration term is derived from the Latin word ‘fenestra’ means ‘window’. Gingival fenestration is not found in routine while its actual occurrence is assumed to be higher. Additionally, if these mucogingival defects persist for a longer duration it may lead to adverse outcomes like compromised esthetics, hypersensitivity, plaque and calculus deposition, and susceptibility to dental caries. This study evaluated M1 and M2 macrophage polarization in human periapical cysts and granulomas through an immunohistochemical analysis and investigated the correlation between the macrophage polarization and histopathological diagnosis, clinical features and lesion volume using cone-beam computed tomography. The periapical biopsies histopathologically diagnosed as radicular cyst (n=52) and periapical granuloma (n=51) were analyzed by immunohistochemical method.
