Assessing The Accuracy Of The Differential Assessment Of Autism And Other Developmental Disorders (Daadd) As A Screening Tool, Christine Jurgens
Assessing The Accuracy Of The Differential Assessment Of Autism And Other Developmental Disorders (Daadd) As A Screening Tool, Christine Jurgens
Masters Theses
Professionals are encountering children with developmental disorders more often and with more diversity than ever before. Disorder labels are being introduced increasingly early in a child's life in order to qualify them for services. However, characteristics of developmental disorders overlap significantly in young children, with features beginning to differentiate as the child enters formal education at kindergarten age. Debate continues on whether the autistic spectrum is being over-diagnosed, based on increasing incidence and prevalence statistics.
Research has suggested that developmental disorders impact multiple developmental areas, including language, socialization, sensory, motor, and medical/physical aspects and skills. Therefore, distinguishing one developmental disorder …

Subjects consisted of a total of 57 educational professionals, 19 subjects in each group. Results revealed that speech-language pathologists scored significantly higher on the phonemic awareness portion of the assessment as well as total test score, when compared with elementary and special education teachers. Mean scores on the total test ranged from 78-89% accuracy. Mean scores …
The Effects Of Service Delivery On Teacher Behavior, Miranda R. Glover Duncan
The Effects Of Service Delivery On Teacher Behavior, Miranda R. Glover Duncan
Masters Theses
The current study investigated how teacher assistance with articulation goals was affected by participation in traditional nonintegrated service delivery, consultative service delivery, and collaborative service delivery. Two kindergarten teachers participated in the single subject design comparing service delivery models. One speech-language pathologist consulted and collaborated with the teachers. During the traditional pull-out condition, the SLP informally communicated with teachers about the children in their classrooms who had speech-language deficits. Students with speech-language goals were treated in the pull-out setting, with no treatment provided in the classroom during this phase. The consultative condition involved the SLP meeting with each teacher weekly …

A Survey Of Illinois Speech-Language Pathologists Regarding Sensorimotor Techniques, Patricia Ann Finley
A Survey Of Illinois Speech-Language Pathologists Regarding Sensorimotor Techniques, Patricia Ann Finley
Masters Theses
Research studies have suggested improvement in communication deficit areas when sensory integrative techniques involving sensorimotor stimulation are implemented to facilitate speech-language therapy objectives. Therefore, a questionnaire was designed by the examiner to identify the extent of awareness, training, incorporation, and co-treatment of sensorimotor techniques of Illinois speech-language pathologists. The subjects were also asked to rate the effectiveness of different sensorimotor techniques and to rate the benefits when incorporating sensorimotor techniques into therapy. Subjects consisted of 232 speech-language pathologists who completed the questionnaire.
Results revealed that speech-language pathologists working in rehabilitation had a higher awareness level about sensorimotor techniques than those …

Durational, Proportionate, And Absolute Frequency Characteristics Of Disfluencies: A Longitudinal Study Regarding Persistence And Recovery, Rebecca Throneburg, Ehud Yairi
Faculty Research and Creative Activity
The main objective of this study was to investigate developmental aspects of disfluencies over time as stuttering persists or ameliorates for 2 groups of preschool age children who stutter. Results indicated that the frequency, type, and duration of disfluencies remained relatively constant instead of increasing as expected in the persistent group over a 3-year period. In contrast, the recovered group's initially higher frequency of disfluency decreased over time, as did their number of repetition units and proportion of disrhythmic phonations, while the duration of silent intervals between repetition units and proportion of monosyllabic word repetitions increased.

Children treated in the classroom setting weekly received 30 minutes of intervention time from …
Individual Phonological Awareness Intervention For Children With Phonetically-Based Reading Difficulties, Kara E. Hilgenberg
Individual Phonological Awareness Intervention For Children With Phonetically-Based Reading Difficulties, Kara E. Hilgenberg
Masters Theses
Many researchers have reported that phonological awareness training is highly related to the acquisition of pre-reading skills (Ball & Blachman, 1991; Lundberg, Frost, & Peterson, 1988) and that phonological awareness should be a part of any good reading curriculum (Adams, 1990; Blachman, 1989). In addition, when phonological awareness is taught in the classroom it has been proven that class averages of phonological awareness skills improve (Blachman, 1991; Barnes, Smitley, & Throneburg, 1998). However, the research also suggests that students with speech and/or language disorders often exhibit poor reading skills (Gillam & Carlile, 1997; Menyuk & Chestnick, 1997). The purpose of …

Phonological Awareness Training: Effects On Phonological Awareness And Reading Skills, Cassie Nelson
Phonological Awareness Training: Effects On Phonological Awareness And Reading Skills, Cassie Nelson
Masters Theses
Past research has established that phonological awareness skills are an important precursor to the development of reading (Jenkins & Bowen, 1994; Catts & Karnhi, 1986; Bradley & Bryant, 1978; Frith, 1981). Results of numerous phonological awareness training programs have been published (Ball & Blachman, 1988, 1991; Lundberg, Frost, & Petersen, 1988; Bradley & Bryant, 1983, 1985), however, none have compared the roles of professionals involved in teaching phonological awareness skills. Additionally, the effectiveness of various service delivery models has not been reported. This study was conducted to examine the effectiveness of a phonological awareness training program on kindergarten children's phonological …
