Comparison Of Sentence Completion Procedures For The Elicitation Of Copula And Auxiliary Verb Forms From Three-Year-Old Children, Teresa Ann Muchmore Jan 1984

Comparison Of Sentence Completion Procedures For The Elicitation Of Copula And Auxiliary Verb Forms From Three-Year-Old Children, Teresa Ann Muchmore

Masters Theses

Speech pathologists have several formal diagnostic methods available for the analysis of language. A diagnostician may elect to use a non-standardized procedure to supplement formal methods. A clinician-designed procedure can facilitate the transition from test result to treatment plan. Such a procedure may be constructed to account for an individual child's age, strengths, and weaknesses. Previous research has indicated that two types of sentence completion tasks, syntactic elicitation and emphatic elicitation, are effective in the elicitation of copula and auxiliary forms of TO BE from kindergarten children. The purpose of this study was to compare the use of these two …

The Effects Of Total Communication On The Expressive Language Behavior Of Individuals Labeled Trainable Mentally Retarded, Lenore Aebischer Jan 1982

The Effects Of Total Communication On The Expressive Language Behavior Of Individuals Labeled Trainable Mentally Retarded, Lenore Aebischer

Masters Theses

The practice of total communication in language training for non-deaf individuals labeled mentally retarded has been guided by very little empirical evidence. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine whether the use of a total communication approach facilitates an increase in the frequency of expressive language behavior in children labeled trainable mentally handicapped. The three subjects studied, one male and two females, were selected on the basis of age and I.Q. They were enrolled in a self-contained, public school which was located in a rural area of Illinois. A multi-element baseline procedure was used. Stimuli were presented using …

The Use Of Thorsen’S Primary Individual Language Screening Test As A Language Assessment Tool, Susan K. Sanders Jan 1980

The Use Of Thorsen’S Primary Individual Language Screening Test As A Language Assessment Tool, Susan K. Sanders

Masters Theses

An attempt was made to establish Thorsen's Primary Individual Language Screening Test (PILS) as a valid instrument for screening child language by comparing performance of a kindergarten population on the PILS and the Carrow Test of Auditory Comprehension of Language (TACL). Seventy-five subjects were administered both tests and correlational data was analyzed. If a statistically significant relationship existed, then one could assume that a score on the PILS would predict how one would do on the TACL. Test-retest reliability and intra- and inter-examiner reliability were examined. Discriptive statistical characteristics of the PILS scores and TACL scores were obtained for the …

A Phonological And Morphological Analysis Of Two-Year Old Children's Utterances Of Final /S/ And /Z/ In Nouns, Janice Brewer Jan 1978

A Phonological And Morphological Analysis Of Two-Year Old Children's Utterances Of Final /S/ And /Z/ In Nouns, Janice Brewer

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to examine, from a phonological and morphological point of view, two-year old children's utterances of final /s/ and final /z/ in singular (CVC) and plural (CVCC) forms.

The subjects were 32 two-year old children who attended day-care centers. There were 13 males and 19 females, ranging in age from 26 months to 36 months, with an average age of 29 months.

In a 16 item test, each of the 32 children named eight singular nouns (/bʌs/, /haus/, /fers/, /maus/, /nouz/, /tʃiz/, /rouz/, /hous/) and eight plural nouns (/kʌps/, /hæts/, /keɪks/, /sɑks/, /bɔlz/, /gʌnz/, /bɛdz/, …

Creative Dramatics As A Language Facilitating Technique, Gail J. Richard Jan 1977

Creative Dramatics As A Language Facilitating Technique, Gail J. Richard

Masters Theses

Children's communication development has attracted a great deal of attention in the last few years. Research has begun to make advances in what we know about children's speech, language, and hearing abilities. It has been proposed that children are most interested (and probably learn most) while playing. As a result, the idea of play therapy gained recognition. Creative dramatics is a specific area or technique that can include a child's play and can incorporate specific language objectives and goals. The purpose of this study was to measure the effects of creative dramatic experiences on the expressive verbal language scores of …
