After its discovery back in the 1900s, photosensitizers became a critical study for potential treatments and cures for medical issues, including cancer. It was discovered that porphyrins appeared to target and accumulate in proliferating cells, and to reach the cells, a certain wavelength of light with maximum absorbance associated with the porphyrin was necessary to achieve cell death. Photodynamic therapy involves making use of porphyrins or metalloporphyrins as activators when exposed to such light. When activated, these compounds generate reactive oxygen species (ROS), such as HO- or O2-, which can react with nucleic acids found in DNA and RNA. In …

Perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAs) are synthetic chemicals that can pose adverse health effects such as kidney cancer, thyroid disease, pregnancy complications and liver damage due to human exposure in food and drinking water. In this study, the class of PFAs that will be investigated is Perfluorobutane sulfonic acid (PFBS), which is commonly found in the environment and consumer products such as wastewater, dust, and floor cleaners, and consists of 4 carbon chain bonded with fluorine and a sulfonic acid functional group. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are organic compounds that are created synthetically or found in partially burned oil, gasoline, and coal. 2-aminoanthracene (2AA) is a common example of a PAH and can affect lipid and carbohydrate metabolism and resulting in inflammatory problems and oxidative stress. The objective of the research project is to investigate oxidative stress in relation to diabetes in rats exposed to 2AA in utero and a high fat diet later in life. Within the past few decades, the presence of fluorine containing

organic molecules has increased significantly. Many of the

current industrial production methods are not cost-effective,

practical, or inherently safe. This work describes a new methodology

for the synthesis of trifluoromethyl ketones. Our new method involves

the use of benzoic acid and trifluoromethyl trimethylsilane (TMSCF3) as starting

materials along with diethylamino sulfur trifluoride (DAST) as a reagent

to obtain moderate to good yields of expected products in a short

reaction times.

In early 2014 Freedom Industries, located in Charleston, WV, leaked approximately 10,000 gallons of 4-methylcyclohexane methanol into the Elk River. This river serviced approximately 300,000 people as a source of municipal water. Its effects on the people and surrounding wildlife is largely unknown.

Chemicals in surface runoff have the potential to induce aquatic animal trait changes, such as altered movement and feeding, that can ultimately alter predator-prey dynamics in aquatic systems. Hemoglobin based oxygen carriers (HBOCs) hold promise as an effective emergency treatment of severe traumatic brain injuries (TBI). In the latest generation of HBOCs, polynitroxyl-pegylated hemoglobin (PNPH), cell-free hemoglobin is modified with TEMPO and PEG which reduce the toxicities associated with earlier generations of HBOCs. In our efforts to optimize the economic and therapeutic impacts of PNPH’s we have synthesized polydimethylaminoethyl methacrylate (poly-DMAEMA) under controlled living conditions via reverse addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. Polyethylene glycol (PEG) has shown the ability to improve compatibility when used in combination with cell-free hemoglobin in the treatment of traumatic brain injuries. It has been demonstrated that the covalently bonded PEG increases the hydrodynamic radius of the hemoglobin and hence generates a physical barrier while slowing down the oxygen delivery of the strongly oxidative hemoglobin.
