Background information: Oral contraceptives are one of the most common types of birth control women use to prevent pregnancy. The most widely prescribed pill form contains estrogen and progesterone. Progesterone helps prevent pregnancy while estrogen controls menstrual bleeding. Today, researchers are investigating whether the use of oral contraceptives will increase the chances of developing a mood disorder such as depression or bipolar disorder. These disorders, though common, affect patients by interfering with their daily activities.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) stands out as the most common childhood neurodevelopmental disorder, leading to functional challenges in various aspects of the daily lives of affected young individuals (Bul et al., 2016).

There is no current cure for ADHD, however effective treatments are available through medications. Up to one in four patients undergoing prolonged opioid therapy in a primary care setting battle opioid addiction. In 2020, the CDC found that more than 16,000 deaths involving prescription opioids (limited to natural and semi-synthetic opioids and methadone) had occurred, which is equivalent to about 45 deaths per day.
