Nursing Leadership in Community Engagement Projects

Nursing Leadership Executive Summary: Addressing a Lack of Education Surrounding Fentanyl Use and Recovery

Our project focused on assisting a nonprofit organization who exists to serve the most vulnerable of families in the Seattle area. They offer a number of programs including a mobile outreach team that seeks to bring resources to families, a program for families which provides the opportunity for new mothers to bond with their newborn, and another program which assists families with medically fragile children to find healthcare resources, and more. Our team was made up of six students from the Lydia Green Nursing Program at …

Perioperative Protocol To Prevent Emergence Delirium In Patients With Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Audrianna Bustos, Roxanne Sambuca

DNP Scholarly Projects

Introduction: Ten percent of adults will experience post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) at some point during their lifetime, 50% of which remain untreated and undiagnosed. Perioperative management of the patient with PTSD may create significant challenges for the anesthesia provider. Patients with PTSD are more likely to experience emergence delirium (ED), which poses a significant safety threat to patients and staff. Screening for PTSD is routine in the veteran population but has not yet translated into common practice. To our knowledge, no protocol currently exists for anesthetic management of patients with PTSD. Routine screening for PTSD in the preoperative period and …

Pain Control: Opioid Vs. Nonopioid Analgesia During The Immediate Postoperative Period, Shamsie M. Lumpkin Bsn, Srna, Isaac W. Parrish Bsn, Srna, Austin S. Terrell Bsn, Srna, Dwayne S. Accardo Dnp, Aprn, Crna Jul 2021

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Background Opioid analgesia has become the mainstay for acute pain management in the postoperative setting. However, the use of opioid medications comes with significant risks and side effects. Due to increasing numbers of prescriptions to those with chronic pain, opioid medications have become more expensive while becoming less effective due to the buildup of patient tolerance. The idea of opioid-free analgesic techniques has rarely been breached in many hospitals. Emerging research has shown that opioid-sparing approaches have resulted in lower reported pain scores across the board, as well as significant cost reductions to hospitals and insurance agencies. In addition to …

Save The Rich, Connor Harris

English Department: Research for Change - Wicked Problems in Our World

The problem of medication pricing and lobbying in the healthcare industry has caused millions of people within the United States to not be able to afford medications essential to their lives. Pharmaceutical companies are taking advantage of the need people have for certain drugs by setting the sale price far higher than it costs to produce. My suggested solution is to make lobbying illegal in the United States so that pharmaceutical companies would not have control over government officials who pass laws to help or hurt the issue of medication pricing. Illegalizing government lobbying will take away the incentive politicians …

Diabetes Debunked: What You Need To Know, Maggie Hutson Mar 2020

Diabetes Debunked: What You Need To Know, Maggie Hutson

Honors Theses

The goal of this Honors creative project is to encourage health literacy in populations who are curious about Type 2 Diabetes or have Type 2 Diabetes. From personal experience, I have seen noncompliance in diabetics and wondered why since it is a serious, progressive disease. After researching, I found that some diabetics do not understand the scope of their disease, especially since many of the dangerous complications that arise from Type 2 Diabetes do not present until later in the disease when it is too late. For my senior project, I decided to write an educational paper as a supplement …
