Bystander Performance Using Automated External Defibrillators During Simulated Cardiac Arrest, Richard N. Bradley, Lynda M. Schoenstein, Wesley H. Hamilton, Mark R. Boyle
Richard N Bradley
Objective: Automated external defibrillators (AEDs) are becoming widely available to the public. This study examined the hypothesis that less than 75% of the general population can defibrillate using an AED in less than three minutes.
Methods: This was a survey of the behavior of individuals over age 12 in a major airport on Jan. 2–3, 2003. After obtaining consent, an investigator told the subject that he/she was walking down the concourse and saw a person collapse. The subject demonstrated his/her response, using only a telephone and an AED simulating ventricular fibrillation. Data were analyzed using a one-sample test of proportions. …
Clinical Evaluation Of A Loop-Mediated Isothermal Amplification (Lamp) Assay For Rapid Detection Of Neisseria Meningitidis In Cerebrospinal Fluid, Paul E. Kilgore
Clinical Evaluation Of A Loop-Mediated Isothermal Amplification (Lamp) Assay For Rapid Detection Of Neisseria Meningitidis In Cerebrospinal Fluid, Paul E. Kilgore
Paul E. Kilgore
BACKGROUND: Neisseria meningitidis (Nm) is a leading causative agent of bacterial meningitis in humans. Traditionally, meningococcal meningitis has been diagnosed by bacterial culture. However, isolation of bacteria from patients' cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is time consuming and sometimes yields negative results. Recently, polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based diagnostic methods of detecting Nm have been considered the gold standard because of their superior sensitivity and specificity compared with culture. In this study, we developed a loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) method and evaluated its ability to detect Nm in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We developed a meningococcal LAMP assay (Nm LAMP) that targets …

Okafor Ifeyinwa M Dr.
Von Willebrand factor is a glycoprotein produced in the endothelium and megakaryocytes. Its levels are known to vary between individuals. About 60% of the variations are caused by genetic factors with ABO blood group accounting for about 30%. This research was carried out to determine von Willebrand factor antigen (vWf:Ag) levels in different ABO blood groups in a Nigerian population. Blood samples were collected from 207 apparently healthy residents of Calabar, Nigeria, for the determination of ABO blood group phenotypes and vWf:Ag levels. The subjects were aged between ten and seventy years. Both male and female subjects were involved. ABO …

Despite new brain imaging techniques that have improved the study of the underlying processes of human decision-making, to the best of our knowledge, there have been very few studies that have attempted to investigate brain activity during medical diagnostic processing. The main purpose of this paper was to investigate brain electroencephalography (EEG) activity associated with diagnostic decision-making in the realm of veterinary medicine using X-rays as a fundamental auxiliary test. The principal component analysis revealed four patterns that accounted for 85% of the total variance in the EEG activity recorded while veterinary doctors read a clinical history, examined an X-ray image …

Okafor Ifeyinwa M Dr.
Iron is a component of a number of proteins including haemoglobin, myoglobin, cytochromes and enzymes involved in redox reactions. Inadequate iron intake can lead to varying degrees of deficiency, from low iron stores to early iron deficiency and iron-deficiency anaemia and this is dangerous to both baby and mother. The objective of this study is to assess the prevalence of iron deficiency and iron deficiency anaemia among pregnant women in Calabar, Cross River State Nigeria. Seventy pregnant women within the age range of 15-45 years from University of Calabar Teaching Hospital were recruited as subjects in this study. The control …

Malaria and anaemia during pregnancy is still a major health problem in endemic countries with clinical consequences including death of both mother and child. In Nigeria, statistics shows that as many as 300,000 lives especially those of children and pregnant women are lost annually due to malaria. This study was aimed at assessing the impact of malaria and anaemia among pregnant women living in Calabar South Local Government Area of Cross River State, Nigeria, which is characterized by unstable transmission of malaria. .A total of 664 subjects were enrolled in the study made up of 414 pregnant women attending antenatal …
Arc Sac Advisory Pulse Check For Cardiac Arrest, Sarah Clarke, Richard N. Bradley, Siobán Kennedy
Arc Sac Advisory Pulse Check For Cardiac Arrest, Sarah Clarke, Richard N. Bradley, Siobán Kennedy
Richard N Bradley
One good quality study (LOE 4) supports omitting a pulse check after defibrillation for patients in cardiac arrest.
One fair quality study (LOE 4) opposes the performance of simultaneous as opposed to sequential pulse and breathing check to determine cardiac arrest.
There is insufficient evidence to support a recommendation on the preferred method for the initial determination of cardiac arrest.
CPR courses should specifically teach the recognition of agonal breathing and the understanding that agonal breathing is not normal breathing and that it indicates the need for CPR.

Lipomas are common benign mesenchymal tumors. They can develop in virtually all organs throughout the body. Colonic lipomas are uncommon, benign, submucosal adipose tumors that are usually asymptomatic. Large lipomas can cause symptoms such as constipation, abdominal pain, rectal bleeding and intussusception. We report a case series of two colonic submucosal lipomas with different presentations, elaborating the importance of computerised tomography (CT) imaging in the diagnosis.

Dengue And Hurricane Reconstruction - Text 2002, Frank Cortez Flores
Dengue And Hurricane Reconstruction - Text 2002, Frank Cortez Flores
Frank Cortez Flores
Unrelenting rains and savage winds, which accompany hurricanes, produce devastating mudslides and sustained flooding. In the wake of hurricanes, thousands of inhabitants face the plight of a greatly diminished capacity to go about their daily lives as a result of destroyed or severely-damaged homes, deteriorated living conditions, and increased health risks. Hurricanes inevitably aggravate the frail health of an already vulnerable segment of the population living both in and outside its destructive path. Repeated epidemics of dengue and dengue hemorrhagic fever afflicting millions of individuals occur annually in tropical and subtropical areas of the world, including The Caribbean and Central …

Language Plasticity Revealed By Electroencephalogram Mapping, Armando F. Rocha, Flávia B. Foz
Armando F Rocha
Reasoning is the result of the computations made by intelligent systems, for instance those in the brain. It is not an abstract concept because calculations performed by computations are very concrete transactions among the different central processing unit components. Entropy measurements are proposed here to disclose the plasticity of the cerebral processing associated with language comprehension in video game playing. It is also assumed that entropy may be evaluated from the correlation coefficients obtained for the game event-related activity calculated for the different electroencephalogram derivations in the 10/20 system. The brain mapping derived from these entropy measurements clearly demonstrates the …

Untrained Volunteers Are Marginally Effective In Delivering Public Access Defibrillation, Richard N. Bradley, Lynda J. Schoenstein, Mohhamad Alshanti
Richard N Bradley
Study objectives: This study analyzed the behavior of untrained volunteers when presented with a simulated cardiac arrest and an automated external defibrillator (AED). The primary hypothesis of this study was that volunteers could, with no advance training, operate an AED to deliver a defibrillation to a mannequin in 3 minutes or less at least 75% of the time. The secondary hypothesis was that this population would perform all of the tasks considered essential in AED use (establish unresponsiveness, check for breathing, give 2 rescue breaths, check for pulse, apply electrodes correctly, clear patient, activate emergency medical services (EMS) response, and …
