Low back pain (LBP) is a leading cause of disability, and treatment often involves a combination of pharmacological and non-pharmacological therapies. Acupuncture is a medical treatment and ideology rooted in traditional Chinese medicine that utilizes applying small needles or pressure to specific points in the body. Utilized as an adjunct to supplement standard medical care, acupuncture is a procedure that can be done in a primary care setting. Multiple studies have shown efficacy in treating acute or chronic back pain, with up to 1.5% of the US population having used acupuncture at one point.

Standard allopathic treatment for UC centers on mesalamine, a 5-aminosalicylic acid drug that acts locally on the colon to reduce inflammation, but does not cure the disease entirely. Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), a condition where the median nerve is compressed in the wrist, can lead to numbness, tingling, weakness in fingers, and thus impaired hand function, possessing significant burdens to patients suffering from this chronic disease. Background

This study evaluated the real-world impact of acupuncture on analgesics and healthcare resource utilization among breast cancer survivors.

Methods

From a United States (US) commercial claims database (25% random sample of IQVIA PharMetrics® Plus for Academics), we selected 18–63 years old malignant breast cancer survivors experiencing pain and ≥ 1 year removed from cancer diagnosis. Using the difference-in-difference technique, annualized changes in analgesics [prevalence, rates of short-term (< 30-day supply) and long-term (≥ 30-day supply) prescription fills] and healthcare resource utilization (healthcare costs, hospitalizations, and emergency department visits) were compared between acupuncture-treated and non-treated patients.

Results

Among 495 (3%) acupuncture-treated patients (median age: 55 years, stage 4: 12%, average 2.5 years post cancer diagnosis), most had commercial health insurance (92%) and experiencing musculoskeletal pain (98%). Twenty-seven …

Objectives: The study aimed to locate LI4 and LI6, to measure differences and similarities in body dimensions based on sex using anthropometric and CUN systems, and to observe the relationship between f-cun and b-cun. Introduction: Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS) is a condition that affects newborn infants exposed to opioids in utero. NAS is becoming increasingly more prevalent due to the ongoing opioid epidemic. Current treatment for NAS is primarily morphine or buprenorphine. Even on these treatments, infants with NAS often still have symptoms of withdrawal, requiring high doses of medication and extended hospital stays. This case study used Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis to understand how one individual experienced chronic neck pain including pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical interventions. Convenience sampling identified Ms. P, an individual with a 10-year history of chronic pain. The National Institute of Medicine revealed that chronic pain affects more than 100 million adults in the United States, citing chronic pain as the leading reason patients seek medical care. Pain is also an extremely costly problem, with $635 billion per year spent nationally, more than cancer, heart disease and diabetes combined.
