Background: Maternal periodontal disease is associated with preterm and low-birthweight deliveries, but randomized trials of likely efficacious treatments (e.g., dental scaling and root planing) during pregnancy have not reduced these adverse outcomes. As an alternative, we hypothesized that periconception initiation of xylitol chewing gum would reduce the occurrence of preterm or low-birthweight deliveries among a historical high-prevalence population in Malawi.

Phelan-McDermid syndrome (PMS) is a neurodevelopmental disorder caused by haploinsufficiency of the SHANK3 gene. Approximately 25% of individuals with PMS have epilepsy. Treatment of epilepsy in PMS may require multiple anticonvulsants, and in a minority of cases, seizures remain poorly controlled. Converging lines of evidence in different experimental models indicate that the Ras-ERK pathway is implicated in the pathophysiology of seizure generation and neurobehavioral symptoms in PMS. The red nucleus, a large brainstem structure, coordinates limb movement for locomotion in quadrupedal animals. In humans, its pattern of anatomical connectivity differs from that of quadrupeds, suggesting a different purpose. This study aims to characterize and compare the functional neural networks associated with different olfactory stimuli, including air, non-social odours, and human body odours. We introduce a novel processing pipeline based on event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and graph theory for network identification. To ensure the stability and small worldness of the characterized networks, we conduct statistical validations, network modularity assessments, and robustness measurement against local attacks. BACKGROUND: Publicly-insured and uninsured individuals-many of whom are marginalized because of race/ethnicity, ability status, and/or other social identities-experience barriers to accessing evidence-based interventions (EBIs) for eating disorders (EDs). Chronic hepatitis B (CHB) is a condition that disproportionately affects Asian Americans in the United States. Knowledge of transmission is crucial for CHB patients to practice prevention methods to limit the spread of the hepatitis B virus (HBV), but also live their lives free from unwarranted fears or restrictions. Among Asian CHB patients, several misperceptions about HBV transmission have been identified. Purpose: To assess survivor and parent perceptions of the long-term survivor visit and preferences regarding accessing health information, survivorship education, and support networks in rural and metropolitan regions of Texas.

Methods: Leveraging the multi-institutional Survivorship and Access to Care for Latinos to Understand Disparities (SALUD) cohort, we administered a 26-item bilingual survey to adult survivors of childhood cancer and parents of younger survivors. Characteristics and responses were compared between survivors vs. parents and Latinos vs. non-Latinos using a t test or Fisher exact test. Patients with undiagnosed and/or rare disorders frequently manifest dysmorphic and neurological features. There is a lack of information on the effectiveness of telehealth in the evaluation of these disorders. We thus compared an unassisted virtual physical examination (PE) with an in-person PE in undiagnosed individuals and also assessed participant telehealth satisfaction. Twenty-six individuals enrolled in the Undiagnosed Diseases Network study underwent an in-home synchronous virtual PE, and a subsequent in-person PE, by the same clinician. This trial assessed the pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, and safety of liposomal bupivacaine given via ultrasound-guided popliteal sciatic nerve block with or without immediate-release bupivacaine hydrochloride in adults having bunionectomies. Intensive chemotherapy remains the standard for newly diagnosed (ND) acute myeloid leukemia (AML); however, relapse risk remains high. Additionally, most patients with relapsed/refractory (RR) AML have poor outcomes. We report the long-term experience of 138 patients, 77 ND and 61 RR, treated with FLAG-IDA in combination with venetoclax. In the ND cohort, the overall response rate (ORR) was 97%, with a composite complete remission (CRc) rate of 95% and undetectable measurable residual disease (MRD) status by flow cytometry in 90%. This paper describes the methods and study design from Project Gender NutriScope, a study that will explore the nutritional needs of TGD youth and young adults.

BACKGROUND: Developmental dysplasia of the hip reduces hip stability due to insufficient femoral head coverage. Periacetabular osteotomy surgery aims to increase this coverage. Typically measured using radiographs, most coverage assessments are limited to static hip positions and cannot capture 3D anatomy. This study quantified how dynamic 3D femoral coverage changes during gait and squat after periacetabular osteotomy surgery and compared dynamic coverage to static measures.

Psychological autopsies are a well-established tool for understanding contributing factors in suicide completion. These tools have been used less often to understand personality characteristics of people with other manners of death (e.g. overdose). This study examined personality characteristics related to the manner of death in 83 autopsy cases using the UTHealth Psychological Autopsy Interview Schedule (UTH-PAIS), a psychological autopsy which assesses the presence of mental illness or substance use disorder but also includes items to capture transdiagnostic personality factors. Spetzler-Martin Grade IV arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) are challenging due to high risks associated with both treatment and natural progression. This study compares the outcomes of microsurgical resection and stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) in high-grade AVMs, analyzing obliteration rates, complications, and functional outcomes. A retrospective cohort of 96 patients treated with either microsurgical resection (33 patients) or SRS (63 patients) was analyzed. Propensity-score matching was employed to account for baseline variables such as AVM size (cm), preoperative embolization and rupture status. Primary endpoints included AVM obliteration, complication rates, and modified Rankin Scale (mRS) scores. After matching, 31 patients per group were analyzed. …

Treatment options for patients with relapsed or refractory (R/R) anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL) have increased in the era of targeted therapies such as brentuximab vedotin (BV) and anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) inhibitors. Idiopathic generalized epilepsy (IGE) is a brain network disease, but the location of this network and its relevance for treatment remain unclear. We combine the locations of brain abnormalities in IGE (131 coordinates from 21 studies) with the human connectome to identify an IGE network. We validate this network by showing alignment with structural brain abnormalities previously identified in IGE and brain areas activated by generalized epileptiform discharges in simultaneous electroencephalogram-functional magnetic resonance imaging. Background: Syndromic surveillance, which provides real-time data, may provide timely drowning surveillance compared with hospital discharge data where the release of data may be delayed. We compared data on hospital visits for unintentional drowning identified in hospital discharge and syndromic surveillance data sets for accuracy and completeness.

Methods: We compared data for hospital visits for unintentional drowning identified in the Texas Health Care Information Collection hospital discharge and syndromic surveillance data sets for metropolitan Houston, Texas, USA from 2019 to 2021. Objective: We sought to determine whether the type 1 diabetes genetic risk score-2 (T1D-GRS2) and single nucleotide polymorphisms are associated with C-peptide preservation before type 1 diabetes diagnosis.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis of 713 autoantibody-positive participants who developed type 1 diabetes in the TrialNet Pathway to Prevention Study who had T1DExomeChip data. We evaluated the relationships of 16 known single nucleotide polymorphisms and T1D-GRS2 with area under the curve (AUC) C-peptide levels during oral glucose tolerance tests conducted in the 9 months before diagnosis.

Background: Data are limited on whether vaccination reduces post COVID conditions (PCCs) risk after less severe nonhospitalized coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). This study assessed whether COVID-19 vaccination protected against PCCs in persons with mild initial infections during Delta and Omicron variant predominance.

Disease-modifying therapies are standard of care (SOC) for sickle cell disease (SCD), but hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) has curative potential. We compared outcomes prospectively through 2 years after biologic assignment to a donor or no donor (SOC) arm based on the availability of an HLA-matched sibling or unrelated donor (BMT CTN 1503). A donor search was commenced after eligibility confirmation. The primary end point was a comparison of survival between the treatment arms 2 years after biologic assignment. To examine the activity of ibrutinib in steroid-refractory chronic graft-versus-host disease (SR-cGVHD) after the US Food and Drug Administration approval, we conducted a multicenter retrospective study. Data were standardly collected (N = 270 from 19 centers). Involved organs included skin (75%), eye (61%), mouth (54%), joint/fascia (47%), gastrointestinal (GI) (26%), lung (27%), liver (19%), genital (7%), and others (4.4%). The National Institutes of Health (NIH) severity was mild in 5.7%, moderate 42%, and severe 53%. Thirty-nine percent had overlap subtype. Karnofsky performance status (KPS) was ≥80% in 72%. Background: Glioblastoma (GBM) is an aggressive form of brain cancer in which treatment is associated with toxicities that can result in therapy discontinuation or death. This analysis investigated clinical and genetic markers of vascular toxicities in GBM patients during active treatment.

Methods: In total, 591 non-Hispanic White GBM patients with clinical data were included in the analysis from NRG RTOG-0825. Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) were performed from genotyped blood samples (N = 367) by occurrence of thrombosis or hypertension (grade ≥ 2).
