Anti-immigration policy and deportation practices create multifaceted implications for Latinx communities in the United States. A comprehensive literature review drawing from public health and immigration studies was used to examine the direct and indirect implications of separation of families due to deportation. This thesis synthesizes existing research to illuminate the health threats pertaining to Latinx wellbeing in the context of being undocumented and fearing being separated from their family. Extensive research has identified that high levels of workplace adversity, chronic stress, and increasing rates of vicarious trauma and moral injury experienced by midwives, underpin this situation. Background. Identities and dynamics in relationships can change when one spouse develops dementia. This study aimed to understand the various types of goals both spousal care partners and persons living with dementia (PLWD) have for their relationship, and to explore whether approach or avoidance goals were associated with individual wellbeing and relational support – as well as their partners’ wellbeing and support.

Nursing self-awareness is essential for nurses to develop relationships with co-workers and patients. In the local organization, the practice problem for this doctoral project is a perceived low level of self-awareness in nursing. This Doctor of Nursing project aimed to determine if an educational intervention focused on self-awareness and the benefit of self-awareness increased knowledge among nurses working on a medical-surgical unit. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the relationship between nurses’ interprofessional interactions and nurses’ job satisfaction.

Methods: The study design utilized was a cross sectional retrospective analysis of survey results within a healthcare system. The Job Enjoyment Scale (JES) was used to measure job satisfaction and the Interprofessional Scale was used to measure interactions between nurses and specific disciplines (nursing, physicians, Advanced Practice Registered Nurses [APRN’s], pharmacists, therapists, and social workers). Pearson correlation coefficient analysis was computed to assess the relationship between JES and interprofessional variables at the unit level.

Purpose: Sport-related concussion can affect many domains of a patient’s health status. Social functioning is an important consideration, especially for adolescent athletes. Our purpose was to explore adolescent athletes’ social perspectives regarding sport and concussion. Methods: Using a qualitative study design we interviewed 12 interscholastic athletes who had sustained a sport-related concussion. The interviews focused on injury details, and explored the physical, psychosocial, emotional, and spiritual components of sport and health. Themes and categories were identified using the consensual qualitative research process by a three-person research team. Introduction: College students were uniquely affected by the pandemic because of transitions in living situations and a lack of social connection. The current study explored students’ relationships, experiences of intimacy, and sexual behaviors during March 2020 to March 2021 of the pandemic.

Method: A convenience sample (N=288) of WWU students participated in an online survey. Data indicated participants were majority women (66.9%), white (74.2%), and varied in sexual orientations (heterosexual (47.8%); bisexual (25.7%); LGQ+ (24.5%)). This mixed methods survey comprised questions about individuals’ pandemic context, relationships, intimacy, and sexual behaviors alone and with others.

This integrated-article dissertation accentuated the perspectives of refugee and immigrant youth to identify considerations for programming and strategies to promote their healthy development. The first paper (Chapter Two) utilized focus groups to explore newcomer youths’ experiences relocating to a new country and advice for other youth who have recently arrived in Canada. In urban areas, the communities are as diverse as the issues, and different educational and engagement strategies must be deployed to support urban Extension clientele. Urban communities must connect with and feel a sense of “belonging” with Extension–this connection can strengthen Extension’s presence and value proposition to urban constituents. This study found that although Extension was engaged in efforts to support belonging, its efforts were hampered by a lack of collaboration and commitment to supporting a system-wide effort to change the culture. Research regarding interprofessional relationships on a labor and delivery unit is overwhelmingly quantitative, most of it relying on descriptors of the concepts “team” and “teamwork.” However, there is a scarcity of studies that explore the actual interactions that occur among professionals while they provide care to a laboring mother. In a labor and delivery unit at a suburban hospital, over a 14-month period, data was collected through participant observation, casual conversation, extensive field notes, informal interviews, and unstructured, in-depth interviews with 12 healthcare professionals until saturation of emerging themes was achieved. Purpose: This study explored Maternal and Child Health Nurses' (MCHN) mentalisation processes towards infant-mother dyads when using the Newborn Behavioural Observations (NBO) system in practice. Design and methods: Ten Australian MCHNs (female; aged 31–66 years), who had used the NBO clinically within the last 12 months, were recruited from a database of NBO-trained practitioners. Interpretative phenomenological analysis of one-on-one semi-structured interviews explored MCHNs experiential meaning-making. Results: Analysis of the data produced four main themes: reflections regarding the dyad, personal reflections, reflection into action, and professional identity and future practice. The landscape of couple leisure time has shifted to include and, in some relationships, rely upon technology use. Technology has the potential to intrude upon face-to-face interactions and quality time together—i.e., technoference, phubbing. However, it is also likely that couples engage in shared technology use, which could lead to bonding. Tweets containing the popular hashtag #ThisIsWhatAnxietyFeelsLike were analyzed in this study. Six themes emerged from our phenomenological analysis of relational experiences with anxiety as conveyed by the Twitter users including: (a) deflated self in relation to others and their perceptions; (b) fear, worry and avoidance behaviors that influence relationships; (c) negative emotional responses leading to feeling misunderstood, lonely, and like a failure (self-fulfilling prophecy); (d) social triggers; (e) anxiety management strategies; and (f) things for others to avoid. This paper will highlight how anxiety symptoms affect relationships and interactions with others, and implications for clinical work and future research.

Creswell (2007) described the essential elements of a research agenda: the axiological, ontological, epistemological, methodological, and rhetorical. Each carries with it assumptions that hold implications for practice and research. Transformative inquiry addresses all of these elements through considerations given to deep ecology, transdisciplinarity, integral meta-theory, heuristic research, and eudaimonistic philosophy, respectively.
