The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Moringa oleifera leaves have been reported to possess potential hypotensive and hypocholesterolemic andhypoglycemic activities; nevertheless toxicological data of this herb in animal models have still been scanty. Theobjective of this study was to evaluate both acute and chronic toxicity of the water extract of M. oleifera leaves by oraladministration. Acute toxicity test in mice by gavage with the extract twice, each at the dose of 10 g/kg, revealed thatthe extract produced no acute toxic symptoms and gross lesions of vital organs. Chronic toxicity study wasinvestigated in eighty Wistar rats allocated into four groups, each of ten per sex. Group 1 …

Habituation And Prepulse Inhibition Of The Acoustic Startle In Rodents, Bridget Valsamis, Susanne Schmid Sep 2011

Habituation And Prepulse Inhibition Of The Acoustic Startle In Rodents, Bridget Valsamis, Susanne Schmid

Anatomy and Cell Biology Publications

The acoustic startle response is a protective response, elicited by a sudden and intense acoustic stimulus. Facial and skeletal muscles are activated within a few milliseconds, leading to a whole body flinch in rodents. Although startle responses are reflexive responses that can be reliably elicited, they are not stereotypic. They can be modulated by emotions such as fear (fear potentiated startle) and joy (joy attenuated startle), by non-associative learning processes such as habituation and sensitization, and by other sensory stimuli through sensory gating processes (prepulse inhibition), turning startle responses into an excellent tool for assessing emotions, learning, and sensory gating. …

Differential Expression Of Voltage-Gated K+ Currents In Medial Septum/Diagonal Band Complex Neurons Exhibiting Distinct Firing Phenotypes, Emilio R. Garrido-Sanabria, Miriam G. Perez-Cordova, Luis V. Colom Aug 2011

Differential Expression Of Voltage-Gated K+ Currents In Medial Septum/Diagonal Band Complex Neurons Exhibiting Distinct Firing Phenotypes, Emilio R. Garrido-Sanabria, Miriam G. Perez-Cordova, Luis V. Colom

Health & Biomedical Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

The medial septum/diagonal band complex (MSDB) controls hippocampal excitability, rhythms and plastic processes. Medial septal neuronal populations display heterogeneous firing patterns. In addition, some of these populations degenerate during age-related disorders (e.g. cholinergic neurons). Thus, it is particularly important to examine the intrinsic properties of theses neurons in order to create new agents that effectively modulate hippocampal excitability and enhance memory processes. Here, we have examined the properties of voltage-gated, K+ currents in electrophysiologically-identified neurons. These neurons were taken from young rat brain slices containing the MS/DB complex. Whole-cell, patch recordings of outward currents were obtained from slow firing, fast-spiking, …

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Ethanolic extracts from fruit pericarp of mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana L.) possess many biological andpharmacological activities. However, chronic toxicity study of ethanolic extract has never been investigated. Theobjective of this study was to evaluate the safety of 95% ethanolic extract from mangosteen pericarp in animal model. The oral administration of the extract was performed in 180 Wistar rats randomly allocated to six groups, each of15/sex. Group 1 was control group receiving distilled water. Group 2 to 6 were treatment groups receiving the extractat the doses of 10, 100, 500, 1000 and 1000 mg/kg/day for six months respectively. The last group was assigned …

The Influence Of Macrophage Depletion On Ligament Healing, Connie S. Chamberlain, Ellen M. Leiferman, Kayt E. Frisch, Sijian Wang, Xipei Yang, Nico Van Rooijen, Geoff S. Baer, Stacey L. Brickson, Ray Vanderby

Faculty Publications - Biomedical, Mechanical, and Civil Engineering

Despite a complex cascade of cellular events to reconstruct damaged extracellular matrix (ECM), ligament healing results in a mechanically inferior, scar-like tissue. During normal healing, the number of macrophages significantly increases within the wound site. Then, granulation tissue expands into any residual, normal ligamentous tissue (creeping substitution), resulting in a larger region of healing, greater mechanical compromise, and an inefficient repair process. To study the effects of macrophages on the repair process, bilateral, surgical rupture of their medial collateral ligaments (MCLs) was done on rats. Treatment animals received liposome-encapsulated clodronate, 2 days before rupture to ablate phagocytosing macrophages. Ligaments were …

To compare the protective effect of dexamethasone and lactate against cisplatin-induced ototoxicity. Materials and methods: Thirty Wistar rats were randomly divided into 4 groups. After the rats were sedated with intraperitoneal (IP) ketamine hydrochloride (50 mg/kg) and xylazine (7.5 mg/kg), baseline ABRs (auditory brainstem evoked responses) were measured in response to clicks and tone pips of 4, 8, 12, and 16 kHz. After auditory thresholds were determined, the animals received drug administration as follows: Group 1 (n: 6) received intratympanic (IT) saline (0.9% NaCl) solution, Group 2 (n: 8) IP cisplatin (20 mg/kg) alone, Group 3 (n: 8) IT dexamethasone …

Immunodetection Of Insulin-Like Growth Factor Binding Proteins (Igfbps) In The Sera Of Different Animal Species, Romana Masnikosa, Ivona Baricevic, Dragana Lagundzin, Olgica Nedic Jan 2011

Immunodetection Of Insulin-Like Growth Factor Binding Proteins (Igfbps) In The Sera Of Different Animal Species, Romana Masnikosa, Ivona Baricevic, Dragana Lagundzin, Olgica Nedic

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Knowledge regarding the insulin-like growth factor (IGF) system and the methods for the detection and quantitation of IGF binding proteins (IGFBPs) is greater for the human species than for other animal species. This is mainly because antibodies specifically raised against nonhuman IGFBPs are rarely commercially available. We aimed to investigate which of the antibodies directed against human IGFBPs could be used for the detection of IGFBPs present in other species. We used commercially available antibodies, raised against human IGFBP-1 through IGFBP-4, in order to recognize the corresponding IGFBPs in the sera of different animal species: human, bovine, equine, porcine, ovine, …

Background: We tested the hypothesis that 5-Hydroxydecanoic acid (5HD), a putative mitoKATP channel blocker, will reverse sepsis-induced cardiodynamic and adult rat ventricular myocyte (ARVM) contractile dysfunction, restore mitochondrial membrane permeability alterations and improve survival. Methodology/Principal Findings: Male Sprague-Dawley rats (350-400 g) were made septic using 400 mg/kg cecal inoculum, ip. Sham animals received 5% dextrose water, ip. The Voltage Dependent Anion Channels (VDAC1), Bax and cytochrome C levels were determined in isolated single ARVMs obtained from sham and septic rat heart. Mitochondria and cytosolic fractions were isolated from ARVMs treated with norepinephrine (NE, 10 µmoles) in the presence/absence of 5HD …
