Psychological And Psychosocial Effects Of Contemplative Practices In The Athletic Population: A Systematic Review, Victoria Baker

West Chester University Master’s Theses

Mental health concerns in athletes are becoming a primary focus for institutions, companies, coaches, and more. An athlete carries an abundant load of stressors due to their lifestyle. The stressors can negatively impact an athlete by producing anxiety, depression, insomnia, and other mental health issues. Previous studies have found a connection between the use of contemplative practices on psychological and psychosocial effects in athletes, creating an opportunity to evaluate the research of contemplative practices in the athletic population. A systematic review was conducted using nine electronic databases. Seven studies were included in this review, each assessing how contemplative practices affect …

Improving The Psychosocial Effects Of A Burn Injury, Leila Young Apr 2023

Improving The Psychosocial Effects Of A Burn Injury, Leila Young

Nursing | Student Research Posters

Burn injuries are an existing risk factor of social impairment. The main priority of care for a burn patient includes the focus on pain management and wound care. However, scarce research has been studied on how to improve the psychological adjustment of burn victims. There is limited availability of evidenced based practice that is related to promoting a healthy social life after a burn. Without interventions to help re-engage burn victims with society, they will turn to negative coping mechanisms such as avoidance, isolation and distancing. The goal of this study is to enhance the social interaction of burn survivors …

The VAD Journal

Objective: Durable mechanical circulatory support is a proven therapy to extend survival for patients with end-stage heart failure (HF). The International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation guidelines recommend a detailed psychosocial assessment when selecting candidates for durable mechanical circulatory support. Currently, there are no formally validated psychosocial evaluation tools for left ventricular assist device (LVAD) candidacy. The Stanford Integrated Psychosocial Assessment for Transplantation (SIPAT) uses a multidisciplinary algorithm to evaluate the impact of pre-transplant risk factors on post-transplant outcomes. Emerging literature suggests that the SIPAT might be useful for assessing psychosocial risk factors for LVAD outcomes.

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

Rare diseases (RD) affect children, adolescents, and their families infrequently, but with a significant impact. The diagnostic odyssey undertaken as part of having a child with RD is immense and carries with it practical, emotional, relational, and contextual issues that are not well understood. Children with RD often have chronic and complex medical conditions requiring a complicated milieu of care by numerous clinical caregivers. They may feel isolated and may feel stigmas in settings of education, employment, and the workplace, or a lack a social support or understanding. Some parents report facing similar loneliness amidst a veritable medicalization of their …

Family-Centered Psychosocial Care For Pediatric Oncology Patients, Jessica W. Casey May 2022

Family-Centered Psychosocial Care For Pediatric Oncology Patients, Jessica W. Casey

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Psychosocial conditions are prevalent in pediatric oncology patients (Kahalley et al., 2013). Family and social support are essential aspects of a patient's health care outcomes (Merck & McElfresh, 2019). Anxiety and depression are common in pediatric oncology patients due to trauma during treatment (Pao & Kazak, 2015). These patients also can have preexisting developmental or behavioral conditions before starting treatment. Treatment side effects can also cause cognitive and behavioral changes (Nixon, 2014b). Nurses should be knowledgeable and confident in their ability to care for patients' psychosocial health and development. The purpose of this Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project is …

The Impact Of A Psychosocial-Focused Experiential Learning Activity On Occupational Therapy Students’ Perceived Clinical Reasoning, Molly Bathje, Kristi Escobar, Meghan Crisp, Catherine Killian, Charlotte Royeen

Journal of Occupational Therapy Education

A primary objective of occupational therapy education is to facilitate development of clinical reasoning skills. These skills are complex and difficult to cultivate in classroom settings, therefore educators often use experiential learning activities to support clinical reasoning development. Most of the literature about experiential learning activities aimed at developing clinical reasoning focuses on activities occurring in-person, with individuals in physical disabilities settings. This research addresses the gap in the literature by evaluating the impact of a group based, psychosocial focused experiential learning activity that occurred virtually and in-person on entry-level occupational therapy students’ perceived clinical reasoning. Students (n=36) …

The Importance Of Psychosocial Considerations In The Injury Rehabilitation Of Elite Athletes, Sydney Pierce Apr 2021

The Importance Of Psychosocial Considerations In The Injury Rehabilitation Of Elite Athletes, Sydney Pierce

Senior Honors Theses

The psychological and emotional impact of sustaining a long-term injury to elite athletes demonstrates the need for an improved rehabilitative approach in sports medicine. Sports medicine is a healthcare profession that requires regular interaction with other people, specifically athletes, medical training as well as knowledge of human and sport psychology. Within the current model of sports rehabilitation practices, decisions pertaining to the timeline and progression of elite athletes’ recovery are based primarily on the physical damage from injury. Unfortunately, the focus often remains solely on the physical injury, disregarding an athlete’s psychosocial responses, which limits sports medicine professionals’ ability to …

Phase 1

Objective: The purpose of the cross-sectional study was to identify associations between diabetes distress, physical functioning, and cognition with hemoglobin A1c in older Black individuals with diabetes and mild cognitive impairment.

Methods: The investigators analyzed previously collected data from 101 older Black individuals with diabetes and mild cognitive impairment. Participants were administered surveys at baseline to assess diabetes distress, physical functioning, and cognitive functioning, and had hemoglobin A1c testing.

Results: Participants with higher hemoglobin A1c showed worse self-reported daily function (r = -0.279, p < .01). Three of four diabetes distress factors were positively correlated with hemoglobin A1c – emotional (r = .276, p < .01), regimen-related (r = .330, p < .01), and interpersonal distress (r = 0.266, p <.01). In a multivariate regression with hemoglobin A1c as the dependent variable, only regimen-related diabetes distress (beta = .282, p = .012) and self-reported daily function (beta = -0.294, p = .027) were significant.

Conclusion: The main finding of this study is that regimen-related diabetes distress and self-reported daily …
