Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

A total of 272 specimens of tench (Tinca tinca L., 1758) caught in Lake Mogan (Ankara) were examined for the presence of the plerocercoids of Ligula intestinalis, and growth parameters such as age composition, age-length, age-weight and weight-length relationship and condition factor were calculated seperately for both infected and non-infected fish. The only marked difference was observed in value b between infected (2.745) and non-infected (3.014) fish.

The intensive care units (ICUs) are burdened with a high frequency of nosocomial infections often caused by multiresistant nosocomial pathogens. Pseudomonas aeruginosa has emerged as one of the most problematic Gram-negative pathogens. The objective of this study was to identify frequency of Pseudomonas aeruginosa from the various clinical samples in ICUs, and to investigate resistance patterns against various antibiotics widely used for treatment. This study was carried out between September 2000-September 2002. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing was performed by the disc diffusion method according to NCCLS (National Commitee for Clinical and Laboratory Standards) guidelines. The following antibiotics were tested: imipenem, meropenem, …

High Prevalence Of Hepatozoon Spp. (Apicomplexa, Hepatozoidae) Infection In Water Pythons (Liasis Fuscus) From Tropical Australia, Beata Ujvari, Thomas Madsen, Mats Olsson Jan 2004

High Prevalence Of Hepatozoon Spp. (Apicomplexa, Hepatozoidae) Infection In Water Pythons (Liasis Fuscus) From Tropical Australia, Beata Ujvari, Thomas Madsen, Mats Olsson

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A

Molecular methods were used to identify blood parasites frequently observed in blood smears of water pythons (Liasis fuscus) captured in our study area in the Northern Territory of Australia. A nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using primers amplifying the 18s ribosomal RNA (rRNA) nuclear gene resulted in a short PCR product (180 bp) matching this region in the genus Hepatozoon. However, because of the short sequence obtained. 2 new primers were designed based on 18s rRNA sequences of 3 Hepatozoon taxa available in GenBank. Using these primers, approximately 600 bp of the parasite's 18s rRNA gene was amplified successfully and …

Anti-Leishmania antibodies were evaluated in sera samples by IFA and ELISA techniques. The presence of D. immitis microfilariae was determined in blood samples by use of the modified Knott’s test. Using the IFA and ELISA on 158 dogs surveyed, 5 (3.2%) were positive for anti-Leishmania antibodies while 22 (13.9%) were found infected with D. immitis. Only 2 out of 5 seropositive dogs exhibited major signs of canine visceral leishmaniosis, and amastigotes …

Age, Gender, Biometry, Refractive Error, And The Anterior Chamber Angle Among Alaskan Eskimos, Robert Wojciechowski, Nathan Congdon, William Anninger, Aimee Teo Broman

Dartmouth Scholarship

The prevalence of angle-closure glaucoma (ACG) is greater for Eskimos/Inuit than it is for any other ethnic group in the world. Although it has been suggested that this prevalence may be due to a population tendency toward shallower anterior chamber angles, available evidence for other populations such as Chinese with high rates of ACG has not consistently demonstrated such a tendency.

Prevalence Of Oral Precancerous Lesions In A Selected Turkish Population, Çağri Deli̇lbaşi, Hakan Akman, Eni̇s Redzep, Ümi̇t K. Akal

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Oral cancers are malignancies that have high metastasis potential and thus survival rate of the patients is low. Today, epidemiological studies are being widely conducted on precancerous lesions, defined as predecessor lesions. In order to investigate the prevalence of oral precancerous lesions among Turkish people, 2000 consecutive outpatients who referred to our clinic for routine dental treatment, were examined. The proportion of lesions with potential to transform into cancer was 4.0%. It was concluded that leukoplakia and lichen planus were the most commonly observed precancerous lesions. All lesions had male propensity and the most affected site was the buccal mucosa. …
