Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

We investigated the effect of hypothyroidism caused by thyroidectomy on the sexual cycle and pregnancy rates in rats. Twenty female rats were divided into two groups. The thyroid glands were totally extirpated in the first group (n = 10). An operation was performed but the thyroid glands were not extirpated in the second group (n = 10). In both groups, the differences in vaginal cytology were examined daily with vaginal irrigation, for 1 month starting 3 days after the operation. Preparations from the vaginal irrigation were stained with Giemsa. A male rat was placed in the cage containing the female …

Short Communication: Relationship Between Body Growth And Mammary Development In Dairy Heifers, L F. Silva, M J. Vandehaar, Brian K. Whitlock, R P. Radcliff, H A. Tucker

Brian K Whitlock, PhD, DVM, DACT

Our objective was to determine if prepubertal rate of body weight (BW) gain, independent of diet, was related to mammary development of dairy heifers. Data from two studies recently conducted at Michigan State University were used to identify factors, within a dietary treatment group, that would account for variation in first lactation milk production or amount of mammary parenchymal DNA at the time of puberty. Factors analyzed for variation in milk production during first lactation were: postpartum BW, prepubertal BW gain, gestational BW gain, postpartum BW gain, body condition score (BCS) at breeding, and BCS at calving. Factors analyzed for …

Serum Adenosine Deaminase Levels In Different Periods Of Pregnancy In Ewes, Muhammet Alan, Zahi̇t Tevfi̇k Ağaoğlu, Ahmet Uyar, Nuri̇ Altuğ

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The levels of adenosine deaminase in different periods of pregnancy and after parturition were investigated in 13 ewes. Blood samples were collected on the day of mating and on days 10, 21, 35, 75, 104, 144 of pregnancy and on day 10 after parturition. Sera were harvested from these samples and adenosine deaminase levels were assayed as IU/L. Adenosine deaminase levels were high on the day of mating and after parturition but decreased during pregnancy. The lowest level was assayed just before parturition. Levels at the sampling times were 8.91, 8.30, 5.50, 3.96, 3.80, 2.18, 1.67 and 10.51 IU/L, respectively. …

Light And Electron Microscopic Examination Of The Single Kidney Of Unilateral Nephrectomized Rats During Pregnancy, H. Hamdi̇ Çeli̇k, Mustafa F. Sargon

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The light microscopic and ultrastructural changes observed in the single kidney of pregnant rats were detected during mid-term pregnancy and after parturition and the results were compared with those of the pure nephrectomized group. The experimental studies were performed on 24 female virgin rats and all of them were subjected to unilateral nephrectomy. No pathology was observed in the light microscopic examination of the kidneys of the groups. In the transmission electron microscopic examination, in the pure nephrectomized group, cell swellings were present in the endothelial cells of the interlobular arteries and arterioles. Additionally, a mild cell swelling was seen …

The Relationship Between Ascorbic Acid, Oestradiol 17 \Beta And Progesterone In Plasma And Ovaries In Pregnant Holstein Cows, Seyfullah Hali̇loğlu, Behi̇ç Serpek, Nuri̇ Başpinar, Hüseyi̇n Erdem, Zafer Bulut

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

This study was performed to determine the relationship between the corpus luteum weight/diameter, follicular diameter and the levels of vitamin C, progesterone and oestradiol 17-\beta of the plasma, corpus luteum and follicular fluid of pregnant Holstein cows in a slaughterhouse. Progesterone and oestradiol 17-\beta concentrations were determined by the microtitration plate EIA method. Vitamin C levels were determined by spectrophotometer. Although there was a positive correlation between follicular fluid oestradiol 17-\beta levels and the follicle diameter in the follicular fluid, in contrast to oestradiol 17-\beta levels, small follicles have higher progesterone content than large follicles. This negative correlation was due …
