Developing An Educational Pamphlet For Patients Undergoing Interscalene Blocks With Liposomal Bupivacaine Exparel, Steve Fankam
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
There are over one million shoulder arthroscopies and arthroplasties performed worldwide each year, with interscalene blocks (ISBs) the typical treatment choice for postoperative analgesia (Etkin & Springer, 2017). In 2018, Exparel® was FDA approved for use in ISBs and educational materials currently are scarce (Pacira Pharmaceuticals, 2019). The effectiveness of pamphlets in the clinical setting has been well established (Sustersic, Gauchet, Foote, & Bosson, 2017). Pamphlets improve health literacy by providing patients a tool to aid in recall and adherence to postoperative instructions (Sustersic et al., 2017). This project reviewed the available literature on Exparel® ISBs, health literacy, and pamphlet …

Mental health disorders, along with their associated cost and negative outcomes, have continued to persist in Vermont and have become one of the largest, growing challenges to public health in the United States. Concurrently, coping strategies of minimal cost that have the potential to prevent or address mental health disorders may often be underutilized or misconstrued by the population. A pamphlet providing information on evidenced, cost-effective coping strategies was designed and distributed to providers and patients to enable patients with the skills to help themselves …

Trans and Gender Nonconforming children and adolescents make up an increasing percentage of today's youth. Additionally, the lack of research in the field, and the ever changing definitions, can make it difficult to navigate and, as a result, there are several persistent myths and misconceptions. This project seeks to address these myths, the terminology as currently used, and local community resources from a patient and family perspective, specifically targeted at rural Vermont.
