Abstract

A scoping review was undertaken to inform the development of a peer mentoring program in the nursing faculty of an official-language francophone minority post-secondary institution in Western Canada. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with mentorship coordinators in seven undergraduate nursing programs across Canada. The results of the semi-structured interviews were used to corroborate the information gathered during the scoping review.

Analysis of the scoping review showed that the mentoring programs were designed based on a perceived need expressed by faculty and students. All programs involved a multi-stage implementation and evaluation process. Many articles focused on the benefits of implementing mentoring …

Contexte et problématique : Lors d’un stage en groupe, la dynamique entre les stagiaires du groupe peut compromettre leurs apprentissages et nuire à l’expérience de stage. Les instruments de mesure recensés permettent d’évaluer différentes composantes de l’environnement d’apprentissage clinique (EAC) associées à l’expérience d’apprentissage de stagiaires, sans toutefois inclure la composante de la dynamique de groupe en lien avec leur expérience d’apprentissage. Public health and social care systems in Canada are frequently racist and discriminatory towards Indigenous people and exacerbates health inequities that Indigenous people experience. In New Brunswick, there are a range of culturally informed health and social services being offered within First Nations communities and by Indigenous organization that operate outside of reserves. Some of these services and organizations rely on support from non-Indigenous allies to meet the needs of their community members.

Purpose: Becoming and being a nurse is vaguely conceptualized, so it is important for nurses to understand the defining attributes, antecedents, consequences, model cases, and empirical referents of professional identity with the aim of better understanding the process of its formation.

Method: Walker and Avant’s (2005) method is used to guide this concept analysis of professional identity.

Findings: The analysis indicated that formation of professional identity in nursing consists of three main themes: individual characteristics, becoming a nurse, and professional identity. The COVID-19 pandemic caused widespread disruption to nurse educators’ work, both within higher educational institutions and in clinical practice learning environments. In this study, we explored the experiences of nurse educators in academic and clinical settings during COVID-19 and the impact the pandemic has had on their work. We conducted semi-structured interviews with 15 nurse educators from six different countries and used thematic analysis to gain a comprehensive understanding of nurse educators experiences during the pandemic. Currently, we are faced with an important equity gap and opportunity for nursing in higher education related to Indigenous Peoples and health. While Westernized higher education often marginalizes Indigenous Peoples, there is an important opportunity to respectfully engage with Indigenous Knowledges. Furthermore, broadening perspectives beyond a dominant Westernized worldview has the potential to advance higher education for Indigenous and non-Indigenous learners alike. Teaching in the health professions, including nursing, requires specialized educational strategies that meet the needs of the current generation of learners. Currently there is a shortage of experienced post-secondary educators in nursing, possibly exacerbated by inadequate Teaching Assistant (TA) professional development programs. Barrett’s entire professional life was conducted at the University. Baccalaureate nursing students must develop strong clinical reasoning skills to make sound clinical judgments regarding patient care. The purpose of this Interpretive Descriptive qualitative study was to explore how students understand the evolution and application of their own clinical reasoning skills. Eight nursing students were interviewed about their perceptions regarding the use of clinical reasoning skills on a written, patient scenario based assignment. An overarching theme of Over Time emerged along with two themes: Understanding of Clinical Reasoning and Making Sense of the Assignment. This research study was designed to explore roles of nursing students, preceptors and nurse educators in the implementation of preceptorship in the Ghanaian context. Preceptorship provides the opportunity for preceptors to offer practical experience to nursing students in the clinical setting. In order to provide effective clinical teaching and learning in Ghana, preceptorship was introduced in nursing education and preceptors were prepared primarily to provide clinical teaching at the clinical settings in Ghana. In this paper, we report on the findings of a research study that sought to answer the following questions: (i) How do current nursing students’ perceptions compare with those of actual working nurses regarding the mathematics and technology demands involved in nursing?; and, (ii) What types of course structures, content, pedagogy, or other recommendations could more effectively prepare nurses for the realities of the workplace in light of mathematics and technology demands? Health science students are increasingly learning in simulated situations within their own disciplines, but interprofessional simulation learning (ISL) does not occur as often and is rarely investigated. This research explored perceptions of undergraduate nursing (n=5) and pharmacy (n=4) students with respect to how ISL contributed to discipline-specific learning, to learning about the other profession, and to the development of interprofessional skills. The students were exposed to three ISL activities with data gathered from observation of the simulation sessions, individual interviews, and field notes. Content analysis was conducted.
