Background: Antidepressants are still commonly prescribed in bipolar disorders, despite ongoing controversy of the potential risk of inducing hypomania/mania. There is limited knowledge about the characteristics of antidepressant use in older age bipolar disorder (OABD; age ≥50) in the current literature.

Aim: To describe antidepressant use, sociodemographic and clinical correlates of a global sample of OABD individuals.

Methods: The Global Aging and Geriatric Experiments in Bipolar Disorder (GAGE-BD) consortium provided cross-sectional international data on OABD individuals (n = 746) and younger-age bipolar disorder (YABD, age < 50 years; n = 692) regarding antidepressant use. Multivariate logistic regression was employed to assess the association between AD use with demographic and clinical variables.

INTRODUCTION: Carotid endarterectomy (CEA) is an established procedure for stroke prevention in patients with carotid artery stenosis. While CEA is considered safe in younger patients, perioperative risks in octogenarians remain debated, with current guidelines classifying the procedure as "high-risk" in this patient population. Inherited germline variants may influence tumor somatic mutation frequency by altering mutation or DNA repair processes or altering cellular, immunological and/or microenvironmental responses after a mutation. The incidence of venous thromboembolism (VTE) in patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) receiving asparaginase-based induction is high despite primary thromboprophylaxis. Our aim was to derive and externally validate a VTE risk prediction model in patients with ALL receiving asparaginase-based induction. We conducted a multicenter retrospective cohort study of patients (aged ≥18 years) with newly diagnosed ALL receiving asparaginase-based induction. Purpose

The role of adjuvant fractionated radiotherapy (aFRT) after gross total resection (GTR) of WHO-2 meningiomas remains unclear. We aimed to estimate the effect of aFRT on recurrence risk and survival following GTR and subtotal resection (STR).

Methods

We analyzed 1452 patients with WHO-2 from our international, multicenter database (followed between 1989 and 2019). Outcomes were recurrence (10-year follow-up) and death (5-year follow-up). Background: Post hoc analyses of clinical trials have characterized dupilumab's adverse effects, yet the real-world impact in chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) and asthma is not well described. This study aims to characterize the risks of lymphoma, cardiovascular events, eosinophilia, joint pain, inflammatory arthritis, and sleep apnea in dupilumab-treated CRSwNP and/or asthma patients compared to those not taking dupilumab, and to other biologics.

Background: To investigate the potential of apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) map-based deep learning and dose distribution-based dosiomics in predicting radiation-induced temporal lobe injury (RTLI) in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC).

Methods: This retrospective study included 3578 NPC patients from Jiangsu Cancer Hospital receiving intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT). Ninety-four RTLI patients were recruited based on inclusion criteria and matched 1:1 with 97 control subjects using propensity scores. Background: Bevacizumab and temsirolimus target angiogenic and mTOR pathways in cancer progression.

Methods: This phase I study enrolled 48 heavily pretreated patients with advanced solid tumors, including an ovarian cancer expansion cohort. Patients received bevacizumab biweekly plus temsirolimus weekly in a 3 + 3 design to assess safety, maximum tolerated dose (MTD) and dose-limiting toxicities (DLTs). Exploratory analyses included tumor genomic profiling and dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI (DCE-MRI).

BACKGROUND: Mitral annular calcification (MAC) is common and associated with increased cardiovascular risk and, when severe, mitral stenosis (MS). MAC-related MS differs anatomically and hemodynamically from rheumatic MS (RMS), challenging standard diagnostic methods. Healthcare-associated ventriculitis and meningitis (HCAVM) is associated with high morbidity and mortality, but rapid diagnostic tests intended to cover microorganisms that typically cause HCAVM are not commercially available. We sought to evaluate the etiology of HCAVM compared to community-acquired meningitis/encephalitis (CAME) at our healthcare system, and to study the utility of repurposing a multiplex molecular panel intended for positive blood cultures for HCAVM cases. Our epidemiologic review demonstrated that HCAVM cases were primarily caused by bacteria and fungi also associated with bloodstream infections, in contrast with CAME cases, which were primarily caused by herpesviruses and Cryptococcus. BACKGROUND: Reproductive factors are key breast cancer risk factors, yet contemporary generational patterns remain unclear. We aimed to evaluate trends in reproductive factors among US women born between 1910 and 2000.

METHODS: We conducted a serial, cross-sectional analysis of reproductive factors using data from the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) collected between 1999 and 2020. Female participants were grouped by birth cohorts (1910-1930, then by 10-year to 2000). Self-reported data were used to derive age at menarche, prevalence of age at menarche <  12 years, age at natural menopausal, prevalence of first live birth after age 30, and lifetime number of live births.

Research suggests that sleep disturbances are common among people who use psychostimulants, including cocaine use and methamphetamine use. These sleep disturbances hinder recovery, heighten relapse risk, and worsen physical and mental health outcomes. Background: Current clinical practice guidelines support the long-term use of pharmacotherapy for obesity treatment. Historically, phentermine has been one of the most prescribed obesity medications (OMs), however, its long-term efficacy and safety have never been evaluated in a randomized trial as its market approval predates such requirements. Objective: To determine the longitudinal effects on α-cell function of four classes of glucose-lowering agents added to metformin in adults with type 2 diabetes.

Objective: The January 2023 repeal of the X-waiver aimed to reduce regulatory barriers to buprenorphine prescribing and enhance patient access to medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD). Aims: Survodutide is an investigational glucagon receptor/glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor dual agonist that has shown promise for treating obesity and its complications in Phase 2 trials. Two double-blind, randomized, global Phase 3 trials are designed to assess the efficacy and safety of survodutide for treatment of obesity-SYNCHRONIZE™-1 in people with obesity without type 2 diabetes (T2D) and SYNCHRONIZE™-2 in people with obesity and T2D. Flare guns are pyrotechnic devices capable of causing serious injury due to high-temperature combustion and projectile discharge. Though intended for signaling in maritime or wilderness settings, improper use can result in trauma patterns distinct from those seen with typical burns or fireworks. Despite their severity, flare gun injuries remain underreported and poorly characterized. Background: Bipolar II disorder (BD-II) can progress to bipolar I disorder (BD-I), carrying profound psychosocial consequences. However, limited research has investigated the transition from BD-II to BD-I. Our study uses machine learning to predict the conversion using real-world data.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study using the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database (2000-2013) to identify adults diagnosed with BD-II. Aim: To determine whether catatonia is associated with increased long-term all-cause and cause-specific mortality.

Methods: Using Taiwan's National Health Insurance Database (2000-2022), we assembled a population-based cohort of all adults (≥18 years) with catatonia and matched each to four controls without catatonia on sex and birthdate. Mortality was compared between (1) individuals with catatonia and their unaffected siblings and (2) individuals with schizophrenia spectrum disorders with catatonia and those with schizophrenia spectrum disorders without catatonia. Retinal detachment (RD) is a sight-threatening emergency requiring urgent intervention to prevent permanent vision loss. While both environmental and genetic risk factors contribute to RD, its complete genetic architecture remains unknown. Here, we performed the largest whole genome sequencing-based case-control study in RD to date, including data from 7,276 RD cases and 236,741 controls in the UK Biobank. Through variant- and gene-level association analyses, we identified VSX2 as a genetic determinant of RD risk while confirming established associations including FAT3, RDH5, and COL2A1.
