BACKGROUND: Campylobacter jejuni and C. coli are the most common causes of bacterial enteritis worldwide whereas symptomatic and asymptomatic infections are associated with stunting in children in low- and middle-income countries. Little is known about their sources and transmission pathways in low- and middle-income countries, and particularly for infants and young children. We assessed the genomic diversity of C. jejuni in Eastern Ethiopia to determine the attribution of infections in infants under 1 year of age to livestock (chickens, cattle, goats and sheep) and other humans (siblings, mothers).

Antibiotic de-escalation (ADE) is important to help optimize antibiotic use and balance the positive and negative effects of antimicrobial therapy. ADE should be performed promptly, and infections should be treated with the shortest course of antimicrobials as clinically feasible to avoid unnecessary use of broad-spectrum antimicrobials. Several tools have been developed to increase efficient ADE, including rapid diagnostic tests (ex. multiplex PCR), MRSA nasal PCR/culture, and biomarkers. Single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) gaps impact genome stability and PARP inhibitor (PARPi) sensitivity, especially in BRCA1/2-deficient tumors. Using single-molecule DNA fiber analysis, electron microscopy, and biochemical methods, we found that MRN, CtIP, EXO1, and DNA2-WRN/BLM resect ssDNA gaps through a mechanism different from their actions at DNA ends. MRN resects ssDNA gaps in the 3'-to-5' direction using its pCtIP-stimulated exonuclease activity. Unlike at DNA ends, MRN does not use its endonucleolytic activity to cleave the 5'-terminated strand flanking the gap or the ssDNA. However, given the low incidence and consequent lack of data and clinical trials in the field, there is little to no guidance on screening and management of these cancers. To inform clinical practice, we developed consensus guidelines on PFCD-associated anorectal and fistula cancers by multidisciplinary experts from the international TOpClass consortium.

BACKGROUND: To investigate the pathologic differences in patients with pediatric-onset multiple sclerosis (POMS) and acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM) using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and diffusion basis spectrum imaging (DBSI).

METHODS: Fifteen children with POMS and eight children with ADEM underwent DTI and DBSI. The comparison of DTI and DBSI diffusivity measures of POMS (31 scans) and ADEM (17 scans) was performed as group comparison and association over time.

PURPOSE: Volar locking plate (VLP) of distal radius fractures (DRF) carries a number of surgical risks including flexor pollicis longus (FPL) rupture secondary to irritation from prominent hardware. This study reviews FPL reconstruction (with interposition graft or tendon transfer) after VLP-related rupture.

METHODS: This retrospective case series reports the experience at one tertiary center with FPL reconstruction after DRF. Patients treated between January 1, 2013, and June 12, 2023, were eligible for inclusion. Preoperative radiographs were analyzed for Soong grading and fracture reduction parameters. Rates of cognitive decline in Alzheimer's disease (AD) are extremely heterogeneous. Although biomarkers for amyloid-beta (Aβ) and tau proteins, the hallmark AD pathologies, have improved pathology-based diagnosis, they explain only 20-40% of the variance in AD-related cognitive impairment (CI). To discover novel biomarkers of CI in AD, we performed cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) proteomics on 3,397 individuals from six major prospective AD case-control cohorts. Anxiety correlates with circulating free fatty acid levels and can be alleviated by a peripherally restricted β-blocker, suggesting a peripheral signal linking metabolism with behaviour. Here we show that adrenaline, the β3 agonist CL316,243 and acute restraint stress induce growth differentiation factor 15 (GDF15) secretion in white adipose tissue of mice. OBJECTIVE: We investigated communication experiences of caregivers of children with medical complexity (CMC) during emergency care.

METHODS: Fifteen caregivers of CMC participated in semi-structured interviews regarding communication while seeking care for their child in the emergency department (ED). Thematic analysis was applied using a previously established functional communication model as an a priori framework.

RESULTS: Each of the previously established 8 core functions of communication were identified in this population. "Building relationships" manifested as clinicians soliciting caregiver input and responding to the needs of the caregiver. BACKGROUND: Patients who have recurrent ventricular tachycardia (VT) despite receiving antiarrhythmic drugs (AADs), implantable cardioverter defibrillator placement, and catheter ablation (CA) are at significant risk of morbidity and mortality.

METHODS: We offered completely noninvasive cardiac radio-ablation (CRA) on a "compassionate use" basis for patients who were unable or unwilling to undergo CA for recurrent VT despite their having received treatment with AADs and placement of an implantable cardioverter defibrillator. INTRODUCTION: Treatment options for patients with EGFR-mutated NSCLC with disease progression on or after osimertinib and platinum-based chemotherapy are limited.

METHODS: CHRYSALIS-2 cohort A evaluated amivantamab plus lazertinib in patients with EGFR exon 19 deletion- or L858R-mutated NSCLC with disease progression on or after osimertinib and platinum-based chemotherapy. Primary end point was investigator-assessed objective response rate (ORR). The patients received 1050 mg of intravenous amivantamab (1400 mg if ≥ 80 kg) plus 240 mg of oral lazertinib.

Vertebrate photoreceptors have been studied for well over a century, but a fixed nomenclature for referring to orthologous cell types across diverse species has been lacking. Instead, photoreceptors have been variably-and often confusingly-named according to morphology, presence/absence of 'rhodopsin', spectral sensitivity, chromophore usage, and/or the gene family of the opsin(s) they express. Here, we propose a unified nomenclature for vertebrate rods and cones that aligns with the naming systems of other retinal cell classes and that is based on the photoreceptor type's putative evolutionary history.
