PURPOSE: Youth living in rural areas have higher risk for overweight/obesity. It is important to understand where these children engage in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and sedentary time to encourage or intervene on activity in specific locations. This study compared MVPA and sedentary time across locations among children with overweight/obesity in the rural Midwest of the U.S.

METHODS: Participants wore an accelerometer and Global Positioning System tracker over 7-days to collect data on MVPA, sedentary time, and location. Locations were categorized as Home, Home Neighborhood, School, School Neighborhood, and 'Other'. Differences based on school and non-school days were examined.

Background: Bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome (BOS) represents a significant source of morbidity and non-relapse mortality among children and young adults treated with allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (aHSCT). Pulmonary function testing (PFT) pre- and post-aHSCT may allow for pre-symptomatic detection of BOS, and thus early intervention. Current guidelines and practices vary regarding which tests to perform and timing relative to transplant. A systematic review evaluating PFT before and after pediatric aHSCT was conducted to inform American Thoracic Society clinical practice guidelines on detection of BOS.

Treatment options for patients with relapsed or refractory (R/R) anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL) have increased in the era of targeted therapies such as brentuximab vedotin (BV) and anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) inhibitors. Background: Carotid peak velocity variation (ΔVpeakCar) is an alternative to aortic peak velocity variation (ΔVpeakAo) and has been used in the pediatric population. Children's physiology and anatomy are heterogeneous throughout their growth. For this reason, the predictive value of ΔVpeakCar as a surrogate of ΔVpeakAo can vary at different ages. We hypothesize that the ability of ΔVpeakCar as a surrogate of ΔVpeakAo changes throughout childhood.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop recommendations for the diagnostic evaluation and surgical management of cutaneous melanoma (CM) and atypical Spitz tumors (AST) and non-Spitz melanocytic tumors (melanocytomas) in pediatric (age 0-10 years) and adolescent (age 11-18 years) patients.

Methods: A Children's Oncology Group-led panel with external, multidisciplinary CM specialists convened to develop recommendations on the basis of available data and expertise.

Results: Thirty-three experts from multiple specialties (cutaneous/medical/surgical oncology, dermatology, and dermatopathology) established recommendations with supporting data from 87 peer-reviewed publications.

We compared data on hospital visits for unintentional drowning identified in hospital discharge and syndromic surveillance data sets for accuracy and completeness.

Methods: We compared data for hospital visits for unintentional drowning identified in the Texas Health Care Information Collection hospital discharge and syndromic surveillance data sets for metropolitan Houston, Texas, USA from 2019 to 2021. Objective: This study aims to identify fathers' profiles integrating food parenting practices (FPP) and physical activity parenting practices (PAPP).

Design: We analysed cross-sectional data. The fathers completed the reduced FPP and PAPP item banks and socio-demographic and family dynamics (co-parenting and household responsibility) questionnaires. We identified fathers' profiles via latent profile analysis. We explored the influence of social determinants, child characteristics and family dynamics on fathers' profiles using multinomial logistic regression.

Objective: We sought to determine whether the type 1 diabetes genetic risk score-2 (T1D-GRS2) and single nucleotide polymorphisms are associated with C-peptide preservation before type 1 diabetes diagnosis.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis of 713 autoantibody-positive participants who developed type 1 diabetes in the TrialNet Pathway to Prevention Study who had T1DExomeChip data. We evaluated the relationships of 16 known single nucleotide polymorphisms and T1D-GRS2 with area under the curve (AUC) C-peptide levels during oral glucose tolerance tests conducted in the 9 months before diagnosis.

Significant gaps remain in our understanding of immunotherapy-related neurotoxicity in pediatric patients, largely because much of our knowledge comes from studies in adults. Accurately identifying the adverse effects of immunotherapy in children is also challenging, owing to variations in terminology and grading systems. Moreover, the manifestation of immunotherapy-related neurotoxicity differs greatly across different diseases, various modalities, dosages, and delivery methods. Dysregulation of genes encoding the homologous to E6AP C-terminus (HECT) E3 ubiquitin ligases has been linked to cancer and structural birth defects. One member of this family, the HECT-domain-containing protein 1 (HECTD1), mediates developmental pathways, including cell signaling, gene expression, and embryogenesis. Through GeneMatcher, we identified 14 unrelated individuals with 15 different variants in HECTD1 (10 missense, 3 frameshift, 1 nonsense, and 1 splicing variant) with neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs), including autism, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, and epilepsy. Mild Malformation of Cortical Development with Oligodendroglial Hyperplasia in Epilepsy (MOGHE) is a recently described disease entity primarily affecting young children with drug-resistant epilepsy, mainly affecting the frontal lobe. The condition is histopathologically defined by focal lesions with patchy areas of increased oligodendroglial cell density at the grey-white matter boundary and heterotopic neurons in the white matter. INTRODUCTION: During adolescence, tuberculosis incidence rises, with a greater increase in males compared with females. Tuberculosis notifications and estimates infrequently disaggregate adolescent age groups. Moreover, the factors that drive the increases in overall incidence and the male-to-female (MF) ratio remain unclear.

METHODS: We constructed a mechanistic model to estimate cumulative Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection and tuberculosis disease incidence in the WHO’s 30 high-tuberculosis burden countries (HBCs), which represent 86%–90% of global tuberculosis incidence. Introduction: Children who use invasive long-term mechanical ventilation (LTMV) are a rare, clinically heterogenous population with relatively high hospitalization rates, most commonly for acute respiratory infection (ARI). We sought to describe patterns of ARI-related utilization and mortality in pediatric patients with LTMV, evaluating the association of a pre-existing neurologic diagnoses with outcomes.

Methods: We studied a longitudinal retrospective cohort across 40 U.S. children's hospital emergency department (ED) and hospital encounters for patients (< 21 years) with LTMV and an ARI diagnosis code (10/1/2016-6/30/2023). We examined mortality and ED/hospital utilization outcomes, defining short-stay hospitalizations as ≤ 2 calendar days. We stratified analyses by high intensity neurologic impairment (HINI) using a validated coding algorithm.

Objectives: This paper demonstrates International Caries Detection and Assessment System (ICDAS) training procedures and inter/intra-examiner reliability for lesion severity, activity, and filling criteria in an elementary school setting.

Methods: ICDAS training was conducted in December 2021 prior to a school-based cluster-randomized controlled trial. Background: Erythropoietic protoporphyria (EPP) and X-linked protoporphyria (XLP) are characterized by the accumulation of protoporphyrin in the marrow, erythrocytes, plasma, skin, and liver, and present clinically with painful cutaneous phototoxicity. Liver abnormalities have been reported in over 25% of patients with EPP. Further characterization of liver involvement in protoporphyria is needed.

Methods: Patients with EPP or XLP enrolled in the longitudinal studies of the NIH-supported Porphyrias Consortium were included. Medical history, laboratory, and liver histology data were abstracted and described.

INTRODUCTION: While clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) for pediatric oncology infection prophylaxis and management exist, few data describe actual management occurring at pediatric oncology centers.

METHODS: An electronic survey querying infection management practices in nontransplant pediatric oncology patients was iteratively created by the Children's Oncology Group (COG) Cancer Control and Supportive Care Infectious Diseases Subcommittee and sent to leaders at all COG institutions, limiting each site to one response to represent their institution.

RESULTS: The response rate was 57% (129/227 institutions). Many sites reported utilizing COG-endorsed CPGs for antibacterial (76%) and antifungal prophylaxis (74%), and fever and neutropenia (FN, 64%). Most …

Introduction: ADHD has a safe and effective treatment, but treatment adherence is often low. Several factors contribute to this low adherence, some of which are modifiable.

Methods: We conducted a literature review of recent studies on medication adherence in children and adolescents with ADHD. We gathered data on ADHD treatment adherence from our clinic in the ADHD Program and the Child and Adolescent Mood Disorders Program (ChAMP) at the University of Texas Health-Houston Program. Purpose: National Wilms Tumor Study-5 (NWTS-5) and AREN0321 evaluated the outcomes of children with rhabdoid tumor of the kidney (RTK) and malignant rhabdoid tumor of soft tissues (MRT).

Patients and methods: Eligible patients with RTK were enrolled prospectively on NWTS-5 (1995-2002) and treated with carboplatin and etoposide alternating with cyclophosphamide (Regimen RTK). Patients with RTK or MRT were enrolled on AREN0321 (2005-2012) and received vincristine, doxorubicin, and cyclophosphamide alternating with carboplatin, cyclophosphamide, and etoposide (Regimens UH-1 or dose-reduced Revised UH-1). We report event-free survival (EFS) and overall survival (OS) from each study.

Objectives: We applied three electronic triggers to study frequency and contributory factors of missed opportunities for improving diagnosis (MOIDs) in pediatric emergency departments (EDs): return visits within 10 days resulting in admission (Trigger 1), care escalation within 24 h of ED presentation (Trigger 2), and death within 24 h of ED visit (Trigger 3).

Obesity is a risk factor for asthma morbidity, associated with less responsiveness to inhaled corticosteroids. CD4+ T cells are central to the immunology of asthma and may contribute to the unique obese asthma phenotype. We sought to characterize the single-cell CD4+ transcriptional profile differences in obese children with asthma compared with normal-weight children with asthma. The Genetics of Neurodevelopmental Disorders Lab in Padua provided a new intellectual disability (ID) Panel challenge for computational methods to predict patient phenotypes and their causal variants in the context of the Critical Assessment of the Genome Interpretation, 6th edition (CAGI6). Eight research teams submitted a total of 30 models to predict phenotypes based on the sequences of 74 genes (VCF format) in 415 pediatric patients affected by Neurodevelopmental Disorders (NDDs).
